DECEMBER 17–23, 2015 tickets: $75-$20 in Santa Fe $55-$40 in Albuquerque

IT’S EARLY DECEMBER; and while this used to be our dead season, that’s no longer the case, as the town is alive with so many concerts, art openings, lectures, holiday markets, and more. This weekend, through December 6, the Santa Fe Film Festival is in full motion, expanding our worlds through avant garde film at half a dozen screens across the city. There are many holiday concerts around town. The Santa Fe Symphony’s free Carols and Choruses singalong on December 4 at the Basilica of St. Francis (at Cathedral Place) stands out. So does the Lensic’s vibrantly eclectic holiday music series, which opens December 11 with Feliz Navidad: A New Mexico Mariachi Christmas and includes a variety of holiday classics through Christmas Eve. All of us in Santa Fe are so proud to have George R.R. Martin in our community. Clearly, he’s opened doors and created opportunity for creativity, which Santa Fe warmly embraces. This Saturday afternoon, December 5, he reveals Dragonstone Studios to the public with an open house, live music, and a new exhibit by several artists. As skiers and boarders know, it’s only cold if you don’t have the right jacket; but as long as you have that, you’ll be able to survive any Santa Fe temperature and savor all the wonderful activities you’ll see in our calendar over the next couple of weeks. It’s going to be a busy and exciting winter; stay warm and enjoy.

buzz Children of all ages delight in meeting Santa Claus at the annual Christmas at the Palace event.
AMADEUS LEITNER
The annual Madrid Christmas parade brings out a cast of characters every year.
For more than 30 years, the Palace of the Governors has hosted this free holiday celebration. “Christmas at the Palace is a tradition for many local families,” says the museum’s marketing manager Kate Nelson. “It’s a real community get-together.” Meeting Santa Claus in the courtyard is a highlight of the December 11th event. After consulting with Santa, kids can visit the crafts table to decorate their own paper cones, which are made for collecting candy from colorful piñatas. Three- to seven-year-olds hit a piñata at 6 pm, while older kids share turns at a second piñata at 6:45 pm. While enjoying cookies and cider inside, families can hear music from Schola Cantorum of Santa Fe and High Desert Harps, as well as by students from the Santa Fe Talent Education Suzuki Music Center and New Mexico School for the Arts.—Emily Van Cleve Christmas at the Palace of the Governors, 105 W Palace, December 11, 5:30–8 pm, free, nmhistorymuseum.org
merry Madrid It’s a small town, but Madrid’s Christmas traditions are huge—and have been since the 1920s, when an annual festival of lights so extravagant drew 100,000 visitors every December. The ballpark was converted into “Toyland,” complete with a working scale coal locomotive. The town’s four hills, alternately lighting up and fading out, told the biblical story of Christ’s birth, ending at a scale model of Bethlehem (on Bethlehem Hill), where a lighted angel would zip down a line in the dark to a star that lit up in the night. It was a display so amazing that early Pan Am flights altered their flight patterns so that passengers might look down and catch a glimpse. Madrid’s Christmas light tradition ended when the United States entered WWII, but not before—or so the story goes—Walt Disney visited the town and was inspired to build Disney World. Today’s light displays are not quite so elaborate, but Madrid still joyously celebrates the holiday that put it on the map. The annual Christmas Parade, held on the first Saturday in December is quirky and fun—but so brief that if you blink you might miss it. Get into town early to find parking. According to Lisa Conley of the Madrid Merchant’s Association, galleries stay open later every Saturday throughout the month, with carolers, farolitos, marshmallow roasting, and bonfires to warm hearts and fingers.—Amy Gross Madrid Christmas Parade, December 5, 4 pm, free, various locations in Madrid, visitmadridnm.com

The Santa Fe Symphony will perform pieces by Bach, Holst, and other famous composers December 4 at the Cathedral Basilica.
Santa Fe Symphony: Carols and Choruses P E R F O R M A N C E The Santa Fe Symphony & Chorus free holiday music concert will be held December 4 at the Cathedral Basilica. Audience members won’t need to worry about forgetting the words to some of the world’s most famous Christmas carols, because everyone in attendance receives a program containing the lyrics. Interspersed with singalong carols like “Silent Night” and “O Come All Ye Faithful” are performances of festive music by the Symphony Brass Quintet, the Santa Fe Symphony Chorus, and the Santa Fe Women’s Ensemble. “Each group has its own mini-concert within the

Christoph Waltz, who plays the ultimate supervillain in the newest 007 installment, has won two Oscars this decade. It’s possible that he read the script to Spectre and thought to himself, “That’s it?” Javier Bardem’s bad guy had much more fun in Skyfall, the previous James Bond film. Waltz’s villain is an idiot, explaining and undermining himself for no reason. Spectre begins with a thrilling action scene that puts thousands of Mexico City lives in danger during a massive Day of the Dead parade. It’s great fun, with lots of skeletons. Also enjoyable is a meeting of the eponymous evil organization, in which suave villains discuss pharmaceutical fraud and human trafficking; a giant man with metal thumbs gouges out another man’s eyes; and Bond is forced to flee through a window and jump off the roof as bullets eat everything around him. Daniel Craig is, as always, very likable and athletic—the best Bond ever. While Spectre has its moments, the second half of the movie smells until it outright reeks. For the original Bond villains, keeping 007 alive—and in comfort—when he was the only person who could stop them, was a silly conceit; that idea died hard in the Bond-spoofing Austin Powers movies. It simply does not work anymore. The climax is just plain stupid, with Bond following tacked-up taunts through a huge, abandoned building primed to explode. Spectre is as typical as a Bond flick can be, with a few cool action scenes, a likable lead, and a great actor given not enough to do as Bond’s nemesis. For Daniel Craig, and the integrity of a beloved franchise, that shouldn’t be good enough.—Phil Parker santafeanNOW.com

Overcoming the 5K distance, participants of the second annual Jingle Bell Run will be lining up on December 5 to help support the community.
Girls on the Run On Saturday, December 5, 80 girls from five local elementary schools will attempt a goal they may once have thought impossible: to cross the finish line of Girls on the Run Santa Fe’s second annual 5K Jingle Bell Run. Members of the public can race along with them to raise funds for the transformational youth development program. The national nonprofit teaches life skills and establishes a lifelong appreciation for health and fitness through interactive lessons and running games. The ten-week volunteer program culminates in a 5K on the Arroyo Chamiso Trail for an easy out-and-back; however, it is far more than a race. According to Council Director Alice Temple, crossing the finish line unleashes confidence in the participants— particularly when the girls haven’t been sure that they could reach their goal. The local chapter began in 2006; since then, it’s served 1,200 girls at ten different schools in the Santa Fe and Rio Arriba counties. The program expanded beyond the City Different last year, providing guidance for girls in Pojoaque and Española. The curriculum includes community service, so the girls attending the race will bring new children’s hats and mittens to be distributed by the Communities in School Program. Public registrants are invited to donate also. At last year’s race— the program’s first dedicated event—100 members from the community joined the experience.—Ashley M. PROFILE
young Native artists IT MAY NOT BE the New Year—but the future of art is here. The next generation of Native American artists will show their wares at the New Mexico History Museum December 12 and 13 from 9 am to 3 pm. The artists invited to the show are 17 years of age or younger. All have family in the Palace of the Governors’ Portal Program, which certifies adult artists belonging to one of New Mexico’s indigenous groups to sell their products in front of the Palace (artists must show proof of Native affiliation and demonstrate their talents to a board of their peers to obtain eligibility). Several of the Young Native Artists Show participants have graduated into the Portal program as adults. The young artists are expected to learn business basics, meet an imposed deadline, and take responsibility for their work. “It’s amazing the abilities that you see. I appreciate their liveliness and their cheerfulness,” says Seth McFarland, event organizer and operations manager at the New Mexico History Museum and Palace of the Governors. The Young Native Artists show gives patrons the chance to become acquainted with talented artists who are still perfecting their technique and style. Adds McFarland, “It’s a great opportunity for collectors.” The Museum has operated the Young Native Artists Show for more than a decade; the sale takes place semi-annually, in summer and winter, and usually includes 20 to 25 artists. The admission fee to the New Mexico History Museum will allow entrance to the art show.—Jason Strykowski Young Native Artists Winter Show and Sale, December 12–13, 9 am–3 pm, Palace of the Governors, 105 W Palace, nmhistorymuseum.org
Offerings at the Winter Show will include jewelry, textiles, and many other creations by young Native craftspeople. 20

shows Zachary Tipton’s Vinylize Dr. Mark Botwin of Oculus Botwin Eye Group shows off a selection of Vinylize frames.
MARK STEVEN SHEPHERD
On November 13, famous eyewear designer Zachary Tipton introduced locals to his imaginative new line of eyeglass frames, Vinylize. Tipton has styled original eyewear for Elton John, Mick Fleetwood, and Elvis Costello, among many others seeking fashionable, vision-enhancing accessories. A custom-cut vinyl record surface is laminated to the front of each pair of these unique Italian acetate frames. Keeping it trendy, most of the records chosen for these glasses are rock albums. Tipton’s Vinylize collection is available at the Water Street location of Oculus Botwin Eye Group—the only eyewear retailer downtown that offers optometry services.—Stephanie Love
Glasses from Tipton’s Vinylize line are crafted from Italian acetate, then accented by cutouts from vinyl records.
