Now that Indian Market is behind us, our fair city takes on a more relaxed pace. Parking and dinner reservations are easier to come by. Viewing art is more pleasant now that it doesn’t have to be done through crowds. For this reason alone, autumn continues to be one of Santa Fe’s most popular seasons for selling art. This weekend is also Last Friday, when many galleries in the Railyard will be hosting openings. There are, of course, shows all over town. Be sure to check out David Rothermel’s exhibition at DR Contemporary; abstract paintings in oil and cold wax by Ginnie Cappaert at Globe Gallery; and Peggy McGivern’s paintings, which are based on old family photographs, at Alexandra Stevens. Our calendar has a complete list, as always. Two Santa Fe summer traditions host their finales the next couple of evenings. On Friday, Santa Fe Bandstand ends its summer music run with the annual Monster Battle Party in conjunction with Meow Wolf. The free outdoor movie series at the Railyard comes to a close on Saturday evening with La La Land. If you’ve never taken in a movie here, this is truly a fun, family-friendly community event. Summer lives on in Santa Fe, but not for much longer. Grab it while you can.

Juan Siddi/Arte Flamenco Society Born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany, Juan Siddi has spent his life immersed in flamenco culture. By the age of 18, Siddi had joined various flamenco companies and had toured extensively through Europe. At 21, he joined flamenco legend Maria Benitez in the United States. After six years of touring, Siddi became principal dancer and launched his own company. This Sunday, Siddi performs at the Lensic with Arte Flamenco Society to celebrate their 10th anniversary. Siddi also serves as artistic director/choreographer for the performance that will feature a stellar international cast, including José Luis de La Paz, musical director; vocalists Jose Cortes, Kina Mendez, and Ismael de la Rosa; musicians from New York and Santa Fe; and guest star dancer Sonia Olla Fernandez. There will be a meet-andgreet and casual Q&A with the artists in the lobby after the performance.—Amanda Jackson

It’s a lighthearted come-as-your-favorite-creature gathering for all ages. While its 2008 origins were more grown-up and battle oriented (think monsters vs. humans), this event is now familyfriendly and encourages fun among the participants. event The immensely popular retro-music ensemble Pink Martini appears with the Santa Fe Symphony Strings at The Santa Fe Opera in a 25th anniversary benefit for Kitchen Angels on Wednesday, August 30. Kitchen Angels, a 501(c)3 established in 1992, comprises volunteers who prepare and deliver customized nutritious meals to homebound Santa Feans who are ineligible for other services due to age limits or other concerns. Kitchen Angels’ Executive Director Tony L. McCarty says the organization is honored to be the recipient of this benefit concert. “We know that Pink Martini, a ‘little orchestra’ whose origins are grounded in causes such as civil rights, will appeal to a broad audience,” he says, “and raise awareness of our program and the continuing need of chronically ill people in Santa Fe.” Formed in 1994, Pink Martini crosses both genre and global lines with everything from international jazz standards to new and original songs. Their upbeat style is a fitting background to the multitude of causes the group supports.—AM

Kim Wiggins began his artistic career sculpting miniatures of the wildlife around him. He grew up on a ranch in southern New Mexico where animals were always a part of life. When an art dealer visited his parents’ ranch, he noticed Wiggins’s immense talent—at the young age of 12—and started marketing his work in Scottsdale, Arizona. By 14, he was painting in oil and had a part-time gig as a graphic artist for a national equine magazine. Since that time, Wiggins has exhibited in numerous shows and museums, including the Booth Western Museum, the Denver Art Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Joslyn Art Museum, and many others. The works in this solo exhibition are sure to be in his colorful, signature style with a Southwestern bent.—Amanda Jackson

PREVIEWS Visual Thoughts Alexandra Stevens 820 Canyon alexandrastevens.com August 25–September 20 Reception August 25, 5:30–7 pm Dedicated to her late brother, Patrick, the newest exhibition Visual Thoughts by Peggy McGivern shows works that “evoke a feeling of past kindred spirits; extensions of ourselves.” After looking through old family photographs, McGivern confides that the old images haunted her, and she felt pushed to interpret her family’s past onto canvas. “My thought was to paint one or two and get it out of my system,” she says, but the project and process turned out to be a much bigger exploration than one or two paintings could justify. “I treasure them all,” McGivern says of the family photographs. Roger Williams Joe Wade Fine Art 102 E Water joewadefineart.com August 25–September 7 Reception August 25, 5–7 pm Focusing primarily on the figure, specifically Native Americans, this exhibition of Roger Williams’s work may have a few surprises—Williams has recently been teaching in Italy and may include a few picturesque European landscapes. His passion for travel is equaled by his love for working in the Southwest. Having over 25 one-man exhibitions, Williams’s work is exceptionally well received and internationally collected. Though founded in classical, traditional roots, his modern approach shows his own stylistic flair. He aims to engage the viewer emotionally, and produce appreciation for the poetic process of the work. His paintings are a passionate reflection of his own experiences.—AJ

The Native Culture of the West Blue Rain Gallery 544 S Guadalupe blueraingallery.com August 25–September 9 Reception August 25, 5–7 pm For Sean Diediker, not much is off limits. His artistic media range from the typical—oil paint—to the outrageous; he has done a series of work incorporating the colors and textures of folded United States currency. He has done a television show, Canvasing the World, which follows his travels to farflung locales to paint. August finds Diediker at Blue Rain Gallery with a show of paintings paying tribute to a grandfather he never knew. The grandfather ran a trading post near Star Lake, New Mexico, and spoke fluent Navajo. Diediker traveled to the area, gathering photos and stories to use for a series of paintings that will show at Blue Rain.—Lisa Van Sickle August 24, 2017 NOW 13
