publisher’s note

|

We surround ourselves with art in our homes; that’s the place where we have the time and disposition to absorb the magic in full. While Santa Fe’s local galleries are among the perfect settings for enjoying art, there’s a greater personal effort involved in replicating the way a piece will look in our own residences. Art of Home—a wonderful gallery- and real estate–sponsored tour that raises funds for ARTsmart—provides the opportunity to see how this can be done. On the weekend of February 25 and 26, this unusual event shows some of Santa Fe’s finest art in some of our most beautiful homes. The tour is completely free of charge. Inside this issue is an insert with information about the properties and the galleries that will be showing in each one. This is a rare opportunity to see how art really looks in a residential setting. Taking a look around these spectacular houses and seeing the art inside is a beautiful way to spend part of your weekend, and perhaps to find some inspiration in it.

On Saturday, February 18, Strangers Collective presents a pop-up benefit with artwork and merchandise from the magazine available for purchase. Refreshments will be available. Santa Fe Restaurant Week 2017

The Santa Fe Film Festival is hosting a 2017 Oscars® live-viewing party on a large screen at Rio Chama during Academy Awards night, February 26. There will be trivia games, with $1,500 in prizes ranging from pet grooming to fine dining. Dress is cocktail to formal attire—so walk the red carpet, have your photo taken, and socialize in style. Your ticket includes one cocktail plus hors d’oeuvres during Red Carpet Hour, and Rio Chama’s dinner and cash bar items will be available for purchase after that. All proceeds benefit the Santa Fe Film Festival. —Amanda Jackson

You know that inviting little dinner spot you’ve been meaning to try, but … ? Santa Fe’s Restaurant Week, held Sunday, February 19, through Sunday, February 26, will give you the perfect opportunity to explore new tastes. Restaurants—both casual and upscale—present their best flavors in special Restaurant Week prix-fixe menus, generally $15, $25, $35, and $45 per person for a three-course dinner, with some establishments featuring two-course lunches. Offerings vary according to each participating establishment. Beverages are generally not included (check with the restaurant, though). Patrons can order from the regular menus if they so desire, but what’s in store for Restaurant Week is so creative, delicious, and satisfying that most diners are delighted to taste the special bill of fare during this week of culinary fun.—Anne Maclachlan

ARTsmart New Mexico, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that recently moved to a new home in the Siler Arts District, is perhaps one of the unsung heroes of Santa Fe’s art scene. With several fundraising events per year, including this month’s Art of Home Tour and annual ARTfeast dinner and auction, ARTsmart works to inspire the area’s youngest and brightest art stars—Northern New Mexico’s youth. Since ARTsmart’s inception in 1993, over $4.4 million dollars has been invested by ARTsmart to subsidize student art programs and provide art materials for students in elementary through high school. In addition, another $63,000 dollars has gone to the Art Changes Lives Scholarship, which is awarded to high school seniors intending to pursue visual arts in a postsecondary setting. ARTsmart not only provides accredited instructors, lessons plans, materials, and scholarships but also works in collaboration with esteemed local galleries and organizations, including SITE Santa Fe. ARTsmart’s programs are conducted independently in both public schools and charter schools in Northern New Mexico. In March of 2013, ARTsmart merged with Fine Art for Children and Teens (FACT) to continue their collective mission—to empower and transform lives by teaching art, literacy, and life skills. With the proprietary FACT method, students learn art history and vocabulary, observe various art techniques, create hands-on artworks, participate in positively focused critiques, and exhibit their unique creations. Governed by an allvolunteer board from our community, the board officers and members are actively engaged in all aspects of fundraising and programs.
