2017 2016

publisher’s note

|

There have probably always been New Year’s resolutions regarding fitness and well-being. But while we all enjoy looking great in our swimsuits and fitting into our skinny jeans, good health obviously has far more significant advantages. Santa Fe is an outdoors kind of town—hiking, skiing, biking, etc., are all part of the Santa Fe lifestyle. Maybe your idea of rigorous activity is being on the dance floor at El Farol. Whatever we choose, fitness enables us to extend the good times. This special issue of NOW strives to provide some ideas about embracing renewed physical health during the winter months, which will propel you to a healthier self in the spring. Not only will you be physically ready for whatever comes your way, you’ll look great in that new outfit. I’m following my own advice, having just joined a conveniently located gym. Fitness doesn’t just allow us to live a little longer, it enables us to savor life so much more thoroughly, and it ensures that our bodies can keep up with our spirits. It’s certainly the first step toward making 2017 a great year. Hope yours is a blast.

Members of Santa Fe Birdbrains, a birding Meetup group, explore Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve.

Meetups bring the like-minded together—offline Not long after 9/11, Meetup CEO Scott Heiferman stepped out of his home near Ground Zero and watched strangers turn to neighbors overnight. The idea for Meetup was born. “Could we use the internet to get off the internet—and grow local communities?” Heiferman wondered. Nine months later he launched Meetup.com as a way to connect real people, in real time, around real things they share in common. Today, Meetup has more than 29 million members in 262,051 groups in 180 countries. In Santa Fe alone there are over 100 groups, representing interests both conventional and zany. There’s something for everyone, from the massive Santa Fe Hiking Meetup Group with over 2,600 “hiking enthusiasts” to Mah Jongg Players Santa Fe with 104 “tile lovers.” Finding a Meetup group starts with opening an account at meetup.com, creating a quick profile, and searching by topic and/or location for activities and categories that interest you. For users and joiners, the service is free. If you can’t find a group you like, you can always start one. How often and where groups meet is up to members, who RSVP their attendance online. Interestingly, in this age of iPhones and texting, the whole Meetup movement seems to appeal to both extroverts and introverts. These gatherings help you find your own people, your tribe, those who do what you do— even if that means quietly reading a book or playing chess. If there’s an app for that, there’s probably a Meetup, too. —Catherine Adams

relax + renew

Ten Thousand Waves is offering a new stem-cell treatment and a Japanese facial massage in 2017. According to spa director Courtney Morris, the former utilizes a biological serum that “replicates dermal skin and regenerates it,” while the latter “addresses the fascia and underlying musculature of the face while stimulating production of collagen and elastin.” At La Posada de Santa Fe, soothe the effects of the season with the Abhyanga Treatment Winter Wellness Special: a full-body massage with drizzled heated oil and the option of one or two therapists. Concentrating on Ayurveda, the focus is “to increase your circulation [and] muscle tone,” says spa director Susan Proestos. “It’s very calming to the nerves.” Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort and Spa marketing director Wendi Gelfound is excited about Ojo’s new lithia pool, recently opened in the former location of the mud pool (which has now moved). In October, Ojo introduced Round Barn Apothecary, an all-natural skincare line. According to Gelfound, “Everything is harvested in the Southwest,” with ingredients sourced from local farmers and wildcrafters.

Left and below: Sunrise Springs Spa Resort features a number of pool sizes, and has recently added mini soaking tubs dubbed "Ojitos" to their amenities.

Ojo Caliente’s sister establishment in Santa Fe, Sunrise Springs Spa Resort, sports a new feature: Ojitos. These open-air soaking pools overlook the property’s landscaped pond area, with two larger heated, spring-fed four-person pools, and two individual outdoor soaking tubs for a stress-relieving magnesium bath. Wo’ P’in Spa at Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder is unveiling a complete new line of spa treatments. A delicious-sounding scrub that blends piñon nuts and coffee into an oil provides exfoliation, increased circulation, and a smoother appearance. The treatment finishes with an application of chocolate and coconut body butter. Spa director Emily Richey at The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe has introduced a menu of spiritual enhancements that can be added to any treatment. A session of guided mindful meditation, a smudging ceremony, or chakra balancing can be incorporated into your choice of massage.
