If I listed just the premier gallery openings tomorrow night, this space would be filled. There’s a long list of great art, so be sure to check it out. You’ll find just the genre of art that you are looking for, all over town. The music scene is very much alive this week as well. Bandstand has a special Friday night show with two wonderful local acts: Tiho Dimitrov and Jay Boy Adams & Zenobia. I know these folks, and could not recommend a show more highly than this one—high-energy fun on a Friday night. Later on, you can catch the Cuban sounds of Savor at La Fonda. The fun continues on Saturday with a painting demonstration by the ever-popular Marshall Noice at Waxlander. He’s a wonderful painter, a good friend, and an entertaining guy. Later, back at Bandstand, Shake Alert and Battle of Santiago take the stage for a special Saturday night show. Also Saturday night is Ian Moore at the Railyard in a free special blues show. I must admit I’m getting addicted to these Railyard shows. I can’t imagine there’s a weekend with more going on than this one. Great art, great music, and a great time to be hanging here in the City Different. Go out and soak it all up.

Henry Diltz, Joni Mitchell, Laurel Canyon, California, 1970, digital C-print, 11 x 14"
Hail, Hail Rock ‘n’ Roll Featuring photography from Baron Wolman, Lisa Law, David Michael Kennedy, Bob Seidemann, Henry Diltz, and William Coupon, Hail, Hail Rock ‘n’ Roll: Portraits of an Era, shows rock photographers at their peak. From the British Invasion in the mid-1960s to acid rock, punk, heavy metal, and through the 1980s, these photographers captured it all. This elite group of insiders had access to the bands, both onstage and off, and to every moment of glamour and grit. It was a serendipitous mix of right place, right time, with a camera and a vision. A few instantly recognizable superstars from this exhibition include Mick Jagger, Jimi Hendrix, Debbie Harry, Janis Joplin, George Harrison, Stevie Ray Vaughn, the Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, and Chuck Berry.—Amanda Jackson

Wheelwright Museum’s 80th anniversary
Entreflamenco’s summer season
History and cake! At the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian this weekend, festivities of all sorts celebrate the anniversary of Museum Hill’s oldest museum. Apart from free admission and a 20 percent discount at the Case Trading Post, there will be a food truck to keep visitors energized, and docent tours, with art demonstrations by Wendy Boivin (Menominee; beadwork); Rowena Mora (Jicarilla Apache; basketry); Shelden Nuñez-Velarde (Jicarilla Apache; micaceous pottery); Kevin Pochoema (Hopi; kachina carvings); and Norbert Peshlakai (Navajo; silversmithing). Also featured is the Black Mesa Dance Group from San Ildefonso Pueblo, who will perform at 11:30 AM, 1 pm, and 3 pm. And at 1:30 pm, there will be cake—of course!—Anne Maclachlan
Entreflamenco’s new venue, El Flamenco, has all the beautifully lit atmosphere of a cozy Sevillian dance venue, with every ounce of Spanish passion and energy. The troupe, led by husband-and-wife team Estefania Ramirez in a classic flamenco Antonio Granjero (from dress and pose. Jerez de la Frontera) and Estefania Ramirez, presents an authentically Spanish show nightly through the summer. Tapas and dinner service are available to accompany performances. Both Granjero and Ramirez have danced for audiences worldwide, and to great acclaim; their passion for the art of flamenco sparks fire with every step.—AM

Mark White, Golden Pair, patinas on engraved copper, 8 x 8"
My World and Welcome to It: Paintings by Mark White Mark White Fine Art markwhitefineart.com July 7–August 21 Reception July 7, 5–8 pm
Mark White is best known for the wind sculptures he fashions from brightly colored copper and stainless steel, standing sentry outside his eponymous gallery. Or maybe for his landscape paintings—broad expanses of water or sky rendered in oils. White’s newest work combines elements of both. Beginning with handengraved copper or aluminum sheets, White colors them using a hot dye process. The resulting patinas are vividly colorful, and the metallic surface underlying each print heightens the hues. He often chooses koi as his subject matter, and the medium lends itself to the shimmering water and iridescent fish scales. A landscape done with this process hints at where White may be heading next.—Lisa Van Sickle July 6, 2017 NOW 11

Sensuality in 2- and 3-D Ventana Fine Art 400 Canyon ventanafineart.com July 7–21 Reception July 7, 5–7 pm Featuring John Axton’s paintings and sculptures by Mark Yale Harris, a new show at Ventana Fine Art pairs organic and geometric contours with sensual softness. Bothartists are masters of evocative expressions thatutilizesimplicitytom akea moremeaningful impression. With mostly abstract compositions, Axton creates eloquent works in oil paint by blurringboth subtleandh ighly contrastingcolors. Starting with stone—typically marble—Harris carves his modernist sculptures with stylized, curvaceous planes that translate beautifully into his limited edition bronzes, ranging from small to monumental. Axton and Harris will be present for the opening reception on July 7.—Stephanie Love

Contemporary Spanish Market Show POP Gallery popsantafe.com July 18–August 31 Reception July 29, 6–8 pm “Art is a reflection of ourselves, the story of humanity, and a quest to understand the physical and metaphysical world.” So says Tucson-based artist Daniel Martin Diaz, and Diaz has gone to considerable lengths to increase his understanding of anatomy, cosmology, and quantum physics; fragments of each find their way into his art. Our Lady of Guadalupe is surrounded with a lacy pattern resembling molecular structure. The fine bones of a skeleton’s hand or foot morph into tree branches or roots—or are those actually veins and capillaries? Much of Diaz’s subject matter starts with the iconography and symbolism of the Catholic Church. A deeper look reveals worlds and layers within, a contemporary examination of ancient beliefs.—LVS

Bridging Worlds— Human, Animal, Divine Sorrel Sky Gallery sorrelsky.com July 7–31, Reception July 7, 5–7:30 pm Inspired by the connections found between environment, people, animals, and culture, Star Liana York renders these bridges in bronze sculptures that capture these concepts in playful, powerful, and spontaneous moments. York lives in the Southwest and draws continuous inspiration from the wildlife, ancient sites, Native peoples, and natural beauty of this region. Working in sizes from jewelry pendants to monumental sculptures, York is a master of her craft. Her clever staging of miniature bronze elements posed on natural materials, such as agate, sets her apart as a distinctively Southwestern artist.—SL 12

The Rewilding Tansey Contemporary 652 Canyon tanseycontemporary.com July 7–30 Reception July 7, 5–7 pm Australian artist Noel Hart presents The Rewilding, a show of new work at Tansey Contemporary. Although Hart also paints and works in mixed media, this show is dedicated to his vividly colored glass sculptures. Living near the rainforest, Hart is interested in natural history and conservation, and the pieces for the show are all inspired by endangered species of birds. Although not direct representations of avian forms, the brilliant colors and soaring forms he uses for these blown glass sculptures do evoke the hues and flight of tropical parrots and their kin.—LVS

Skull & Bone Group Show Eye on the Mountain Art Gallery 614 Agua Fria eyeonthemountaingallery.com July 7–August 11 Opening reception July 7, 5–9 pm Eye on the Mountain Art Gallery presents a unique, mixed media group show wherein artists incorporate a real skull or bone somewhere in the work of art. Rachel Houseman, owner of the gallery and an artist in her own right, found inspiration for the exhibition in live performances by the band Bone Orchard, whose name is a euphemism for a graveyard. Bone Orchard, from Taos, New Mexico, specializes in singer-songwriter–style music, and describes their sound as “Celtic gypsy spaghetti Western with Spanish influences.” The band will perform August 11, 6–8 pm in the gallery’s garden for the show’s closing reception.—Amanda Jackson
The Solace in Imperfection GF Contemporary gfcontemporary.com July 7–21 Reception July 7, 5–7 pm Santa Fe artist Gigi Mills paints in mere references to the physical world. She deconstructs the everyday, painting in flat, geometric shapes, rarely including any detail; the simplified style produces an elegance that is essential to her work. She uses layers of rich oil, sometimes adding a glaze, to reveal ethereal images that are at once both personal and timeless. Having been raised among the Mills Brothers’ Circus and trained as a ballerina, Mills often incorporates characters in performance in her works—many of her paintings appear as a stage set, where the figures and interiors are conspicuously on display. In July, GF Contemporary will present new works from Mills with a reception on July 7.—AJ
