THERE’S NOTHING QUITE LIKE the opening of The Santa Fe Opera. The energy of it simply fills our town. Private jets will be lined up out at the airport as elite visitors come in for the special events surrounding this annual party. If you have never been to the season opening tailgate party at the Opera, I highly recommend it. Friday night, the opening opera is Die Fledermaus, a lighthearted comedy that’s perfect for those first getting to know the genre. Of course, in sync with the Opera, many galleries are having openings, so be sure to check out the list for Friday evening. Entreflamenco kicks off its exciting summer season of flamenco on Thursday, and many of our restaurants and bars will be offering a wonderful selection of music. Saturday night, Mariachi Flor de Toloache, New York City’s first all-female mariachi, headlines at the Railyard. If you haven’t made it over to see any of the Saturday night concerts there, don’t miss this one. And finally, the grand finale to this wonderful weekend will be on Tuesday, the 4th of July, with Pancakes on the Plaza. In addition to serving up a great breakfast that raises money for area nonprofits, this tradition is a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old friends on Santa Fe’s oldest meeting ground. A great car show takes place at the same time. All in all, this is a big weekend for Santa Fe and a great time to be here. So enjoy!
4th of July Madness and fireworks This year, the fireworks show that was an annual tradition at Santa Fe High School’s Ivan Head Stadium relocates to the Santa Fe Place Mall and nearby Villa Linda Park. This move allows for 3,000 available parking spaces—with no parking fee. Food trucks will be parked between the east side of the mall and the north end of the park, and various children’s activities, including a bounce house, will be set up in the parking lot. The Kiwanis Club—the same team who produces the annual burning of Zozobra—is in charge of this year’s fireworks display. Fourth of July Madness activities begin at the mall at 8 am, with early evening pre-events at 6, and the fireworks at 9 pm.—Amanda Jackson e v ent
Independence Day fireworks have a new venue this year: they will be launched from Santa Fe Place.

This year’s event will feature power tool racing. Shown here are two entries for the festival.
The Art of the Machine The Art of the Machine, presented by AHA [After Hours Alliance] and MAKE Santa Fe, and organized in conjunction with the Arts + Creativity Center, is a block party–style event held in the Siler/Rufina arts district. This event aims to celebrate artists, customizers, fabricators, performers, and mad scientists who utilize a varied array of contraptions, machines, and other gadgetry and gizmos. The project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. This event is one of three—The Art of the Machine, Progressive Arts Fair, and String of Lights: A Holiday Market—hosted by AHA, aiming to “create a platform for artists to experiment with showing and performing work free from the requirements that are often laid out by traditional art markets, performance venues, and gallery environments.”—AJ e vent

John Oteri, Talkin’ the Talk, oil on canvas, 8 x 16"
John Oteri: Solo Exhibition Joe Wade Fine Art joewadefineart.com June 30–July 9 Reception June 30, 5–7 pm
Painter John Oteri’s approach is best illustrated through his own words: “White paper is very beautiful in itself and I find it very difficult to cover it all. As a result, my paintings tend to be vignette-like with a major center of interest. Because of this tendency, I feel the painting can be viewed either at a distance strictly as an abstract composition, or close-up, revealing the detail of the subject matter.” Certainly, his colorful ghostly forms moving through simple landscapes are lovely from afar. Yet, upon close observation, fabric and patterns are beautifully expressed.—Anne Maclachlan

PREVIEWS
Tony Vaccaro: A Retrospective Monroe Gallery of Photography 112 Don Gaspar monroegallery.com June 30–September 17 Reception June 30, 5–7 pm Tony Vaccaro is so dedicated to photography that he took his camera with him when he was sent to Europe to fight in World War II. At night, he would develop film in army helmets and hang the negatives from branches to dry. When the war ended, Stars and Stripes magazine hired Vaccaro to stay in Europe to document the reconstruction of Germany. On his return to the United States in 1950, Vaccaro began a career as a commercial photographer that continues to this day. His photos range from the death and horror of the war to shots of celebrities and fashion. The photographer, now 94, still works several hours each day and plans to attend the opening of the show in Santa Fe.—Lisa Van Sickle Right: Tony Vaccaro, Kiss of Liberation, St. Briac, France, August 14, 1944, archival pigment print, 22 x 17"
Rose Masterpol: Saints + Sinners: The Salvation Series McLarry Modern 225 Canyon mclarrymodern.com June 30–July 8 Reception June 30, 5–7 pm “My work is a . . . feeling, not a thought. Because I am highly sensitive, vulnerable, and emotional, I am vastly open to possibilities that are otherwise not present or available,” notes Rose Masterpol. She continues, “The work is explicit without using any vocabulary, for there are only so many words to describe or classify what we already know and live by. Discussing my work is difficult precisely for that very reason.” Her abstract paintings, which utilize the power of stroke, color, and line, will be on view at McLarry Modern beginning June 30. Masterpol was born in New York, later receiving a bachelor’s degree in fine art at the California Institute of the Arts. She also holds a graphic design degree from CalArts, and worked as a creative director for advertising agencies in Los Angeles. She currently resides in Santa Fe.—AM Above: Rose Masterpol, Salvation, acrylic, 72 x 48"
Don Brackett and PJ Garoutte Manitou Galleries 225 Canyon manitougalleries.com June 30–July 14 Reception June 30, 5–7:30 pm Artists Don Brackett and PJ Garoutte exhibit at Manitou Galleries this summer. Brackett, a third-generation New Mexican, paints in both watercolor and oil. Currently working primarily in oil, he continues to win numerous awards in both mediums. His works often depict New Mexico’s monumental landscapes, quiet villages, nocturnes, people on horseback, mountain streams in the snow, and similar subjects. Garoutte approaches her paintings with “complexity within simplicity.” She says, “My paintings are a diary of my everyday life; there has been a continuous dialogue between myself and my works of art my whole life.” Garoutte notes that she spends a lot of time visualizing her paintings, both before and after she paints them. Brackett and Garoutte have been married for 35 years and reside in Taos.—Amanda Jackson Above: PJ Garoutte, Poppies Extraordinaire, oil on canvas, 8 x 10" 12

Expressive Landscapes Waxlander Gallery, 622 Canyon, waxlander.com July 4–17, demonstration/lecture July 8, 3–5 pm Marshall Noice’s annual one-man show at Waxlander Gallery is a highly anticipated event. Best known for his landscapes in pastel and oil, Noice presents an exhibition that includes the vibrant pieces collectors expect as well as a few surprise abstract works and paintings in a non-typical color palette. With a special interest in the forests and landscapes of the Western states, he strives to “create a work, an artifact if you will, that resonates with the spirit of the landscape that inspired me to begin working. It’s hard for me to say exactly why one location makes me want to paint and another often equally beautiful or interesting location is easily passed by. But it’s impossible to resist the urge when the right subject matter comes before me. It’s almost a magnetic attraction. I’m instantly drawn in and I simply must paint.”—AJ

Emotional Expressions in Color Pippin Contemporary 409 Canyon pippincontemporary.com July 5–18 Reception July 7, 5–7 p m Curating the brilliant works of four female masters, Pippin Contemporary hosts a show that emphasizes strong hues and emotion. The graphic paintings that Elizabeth Hahn creates in acrylics comprise imaginative compositions punctuated by color. Her whimsical figurative works contrast with the abstract mixed media canvases by Liz Barber. Barber’s sporadic layers of pigment complement one another with bright energy, while the abstract works by Stephanie Paige form rough, textural horizontal planes to evoke a sense of sky or landscape. Suzanne Wallace Mears expresses her own vivid palette in bold geometric shapes that come together as kiln-formed glass artworks.—Stephanie Love

Charlotte Jackson carries primarily color-oriented painting and sculpture, and this show is no exception. Participating artists include an array of painters and sculptors: Charles Arnoldi, Tim Bavington, Frederick Hammersley, William Metcalf, Heiner Thiel, Paul Sarkisian, Michael Post, Pard Morrison, Jeremy Thomas, and Bill Thompson.—LVS June 29, 2017 NOW 13
