Welcome to the movies! Starting with this print edition of NOW, we are including Santa Fe movie theater listings. This reflects our effort to be your weekly one-stop shop for things to do in Santa Fe, along with giving you the important details about the events that we cover. Of course, many other things are going on in Santa Fe at this time of year. There are more gallery openings as the season returns from the winter slumber, and the music scene is also reawakening. This weekend, Bill Hearne is bringing his brand of Texas swing to Cowgirl BBQ. There’s also plenty of great music at Vanessie, among a variety of locations. Finally, for art professionals—or those wanting to be art professionals—my friend Betsy Ehrenberg is launching her Art Business Summit this weekend, April 1 and 2. This is a wonderful opportunity to examine one of Santa Fe’s most important industries and learn what skills are essential to success. The weather has warmed up, so let’s get out and enjoy the great happenings around town.

Gallery owner Shanan Campbell Wells states, “These workshops are a chance to watch and study with artists possessing years of experience. Santa Fe Art Business Summit provides education in the business of art.
The weekend of March 31–April 2, Bridges to Santa Fe and The Arts Business Institute sponsor an art business summit. A March 31 reception at Blue Rain Gallery’s downtown location features speaker Elizabeth Hulings of the Clark Hulings Fund, who will discuss “Artists as Business People.” This summit is geared toward professional developments for artists, creative producers, and makers, as well as small business owners and art educators. All events are private and registration is required. Saturday and Sunday, the summit continues in the meeting rooms at form & concept. More than 16 hours of instruction during 10 classroom and interactive presentations are scheduled, and participants will receive corresponding handouts. Topics include marketing, pricing, copyright protection, art licensing, selling art online, and much more. A Saturday evening presentation is planned, with inspirational speaker Victoria Price. Business consultants are available for individual strategy sessions at an additional fee; however, time slots are extremely limited and will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.—AJ

FILMING Filmmaker Sterlin Harjo (Seminole) has signed on to produce Scalped, the latest Warner Bros. / WGN TV pilot to be filmed in Santa Fe. Set on the fictional Prairie Rose reservation, the show is based on the DC Vertigo comic of the same name, created by writer Jason Aaron and artist R.M. Guéra. In a fresh move for television, Scalped stars an allNative leading cast, which includes antagonists Alex Meraz (Purépecha) as Dashiell Bad Horse and Gil Birmingham (Comanche) as Chief Lincoln Red Crow; with Irene Bedard (Inupiaq/ Yupik/Cree) as Gina Bad Horse; Lily Gladstone (Blackfeet) as Carol Red Crow; and Chaske Spencer (Lakota) as Sheriff Falls Down. Marcus Zúñiga: Ya Veo NO LAND 54 1/2 E San Francisco #7 strangerscollective.com April 8–June 10 Reception April 8, 6–9 pm On April 8, under the direction of Jordan Eddy, Kyle Farrell, and Alex Gill, Strangers Collective officially launches NO LAND— a new art space on the Plaza. After two years of hosting pop-up exhibitions, Strangers Collective now occupies a brick-and-mortar gallery that works one-on-one with emerging artists, writers, and performers who are ready to develop and show comprehensive bodies of work in solo or small-group exhibitions. Plans also include collaborations with other creative groups in the area. NO LAND will host a permanent zine library and maintain a store stocked with affordable merchandise. 12

Marcus Zúñiga, Hidrógeno/Helio, digital video on loop, 46 seconds
The inaugural exhibition at NO LAND will transform the space into a futuristic planetarium through works by new-media artist Marcus Zúñiga in a show titled Ya Veo; Spanish for “I see.” Representing two years of astronomical exploration, his first solo exhibition comprises eight pieces, and includes a selection of video, photography, and new media sculptures. Zúñiga incorporates cosmic imagery into his works by manipulating footage captured through his telescope. He implores viewers to ponder their place in the universe. “My work is about the perception of the universe—it’s part of a conversation that spans millennia, and can’t be resolved in a simple yes or no.” Zúñiga continues, “I never pursued astronomy seriously [as a student at the University of New Mexico] because it always seemed too dry to think about in a very scientific way. Through art, I could experience concepts of the universe and create those experiences.” Mapping the constellations has helped him explore his MexicanAmerican roots, seen through the titles of his works, which utilize Spanish and Nahuatl (Aztec) words and phrases.—Amanda Jackson

Southwestern Chronicles Sorrel Sky Gallery 125 W Palace sorrelsky.com April 7–30 Reception April 7, 5–7 pm At first glance, the art of Jim Bagley, Gerald Balciar, and Laura Bruzzese appears unrelated. A closer look reveals that, while one works in bronze, the second is a painter, and the third a potter, there are striking similarities. Each of the three chooses imagery of the Southwest as subject matter. Laura Bruzzese, the potter, paints Southwestern scenes on her porcelain jars and vases, capturing the landscape, flora, and fauna around the surface. Gerald Balciar’s bronze animals are less realistic representations than portraits of the soul of the animal, sometimes set in a sliver of its habitat. Jim Bagley unabashedly revels in the beauty of Rocky Mountain skies, scenery, and sometimes, fish in his paintings. All three do indeed chronicle the Southwest.—LVS

Susan Dewsnap, Martina Lantin, Susie Rubenstein Santa Fe Clay 545 Camino de la Familia santafeclay.com April 7–May 27 Reception April 7, 5–7 pm With a focus on functionality and a common thread of interest in and exploration of surface decoration and pattern, each of these three artists brings a unique approach to her chosen medium. Susan Dewsnap uses wax resist to draw abstracted shapes directly on the slipped surface of the pot in response to the inherent gesture of the work. Her drawings range from sharp and crisp to shadowy and soft. Martina Lantin’s earthenware forms invite use. Her choices of glazes and flowing brushwork add complexity to these deceptively simple pots. Susie Rubenstein creates installations; a wall grouping of 35 plates or a series of jars on a shelf are examples of her style. Rubenstein’s imagery references the natural world and motifs of plant forms, flowers, lemons, and birds.—AJ March 30, 2017 NOW 13
