publisher’s note

Santa Fe never ceases to amaze me with its creativity. The next two weeks provide ample proof just how “out there” we can be. One such event, beginning on Friday, November 11, is form & concept’s exhibition of superheroes as they relate to Native culture. Held in conjunction with the world’s first Indigenous Comic Con, in Albuquerque, Native Realities offers this fresh persepctive. As it applies to music, Santa Fe is ofering a variety of musical styles, from country to funk, Broadway to Gypsy, big band and beyond. The Indigo Girls will be performing at the Lensic, which is also hosting two members of the Russian political-musical activist group in “A Conversation With Pussy Riot” on November 13. Theater is not left out, either. The Nude Coffee Reunion Show at the Adobe Rose Theatre revisits an idea that started 20 years ago in San Francisco with three powerhouse women. Today, one of the trio is a man, and they are as funny as they ever were. With all of these events, and our ongoing vibrant art scene, you will not be bored. Rather, inspiration is to be found throughout all of these entertaining opportunities. The challenge is deciding the one you want to explore.

rights, riots, and Red Square: Pussy Riot at The Lensic

make it all go away: Magician George Tovar at Jean Cocteau EVENT Ready for some magical comic relief? George Tovar, who has performed at the prestigious Magic Castle in Los Angeles, brings his talents to the Jean Cocteau Cinema in an all-agesappropriate performance this weekend. Known for his close-up sleight-of-hand and his humorous style, Tovar has also worked his magic in Las Vegas and on a number of popular television series. He’ll have three shows at the Cocteau: one on Saturday evening, one Sunday afternoon, and his final performance on Sunday evening.—Anne Maclachlan

EVENT The Lensic and Meow Wolf present A Conversation With Pussy Riot this Sunday, as musician Maria (Masha) Alyokhina and journalist Alexandra (Sasha) Bogino, members of the Moscow-based punk-rock activist group Pussy Riot, speak with Arlene Goldbard, writer, speaker, and social activist, about their mission, their music, and running afoul of Vladimir Putin. Alyokhina, one of three group members arrested after a protest concert in Cathedral of Christ the Savior, spent nearly two years in prison on charges of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.” The musicians’ detentions sparked a strong international response from human rights groups, performers, and journalists. Bogino, affiliated with Pussy Riot’s media outlet Media Zona, is a writer who covers Russian political activism and imprisonment. Both women will take questions from the audience.—AM

Cynthia Reid, The Good Earth, oil on canvas, 20 x 30"

In her first solo exhibition at Gallery 901, Tucson artist Cynthia Reid will show over 15 oil paintings in her signature style. Using a palette knife technique to create her landscapes and other imagery, she juxtaposes the vibrant colors that express the joy, beauty, and texture of the outside world. Reid states, “My art reflects my passion for the beauty and mystery that lie at the heart of the natural world…I often work reductively by applying paint and then removing it to create a desired effect, such as the increase in energy that can arise with sgraffito,” she continues. “My intention is that each painting allows the viewer to enjoy the warmth and comfort of being in a particular place.”—Amanda Jackson

PREVIEWS

Dion Valdez, IML #9, acrylic on panel, 3 x 4'

Long Echo Center for Contemporary Arts 1050 Old Pecos Trl ccasantafe.org Through January 15 Presented by codirectors Alex Gill and Kyle Farrell of Strangers Collective, Long Echo intends to transform the Center for Contemporary Art’s Cinematheque lobby gallery into a diverse art exhibition. According to Gill, “Long Echo comes at a time when many of us are delving into past experiences. These conceptual and aesthetic elements are ringing out again in clearer and stronger ways.” Farrell adds that the show addresses the question, “How do you concentrate your creative power?” The goal of the exhibition is to challenge visitors to rethink the role of emerging visual art, writing, music, and dance and the links among them in the broader community. In addition to the exhibition, Strangers Collective will host a series of to-be-announced events during the 11-week show. These events include a panel discussion and round-table gathering, as well as performance installations.—Amanda Jackson Native Realities: Superheroes of the Past, Present, & Future form & concept 435 S Guadalupe formandconcept.center November 11–December 31 Reception November 11, 5–7 pm Professional Native American comic artists Weshoyot Alvitre (Tongva), Jonathan Nelson (Diné), Jon Proudstar (Yaqui), Ryan Singer (Navajo), and Arigon Starr (Kickapoo), along with youth, teachers, and leaders from the Zuni Pueblo, come together at form & concept for a trailblazing exhibition that invites the public to consider the role of heroes—those everyday people doing extraordinary work—in our lives. Created as comic art and various comic book series, these works serve a purpose. As described by artist Starr about her comic book series Super Indian, “There is a lot of social consciousness evident in Super Indian, but disguised in humor. You can look at it as satire or parody—but underneath the yuks, it’s great to explore issues of identity, community, and how Native folks are perceived.” This exhibition also aims to examine and share the stories of superheroes across Native cultures.—AJ

Francisco Benítez, The Thinker, oil on canvas, 60 x 48"

Ryan Singer, Rancor versus the Hero Twins, acrylic on canvas, 20 x 24"

Francisco Benítez: Ekphrastic Mnemonics Phil Space 1410 Second St philspacesantafe.com November 11–25 Reception November 11, 5–7 pm Artist Francisco Benítez, working in the notoriously difficult medium of encaustic, fuses the gravitas of history with the psychological narratives of his subjects in his new show, Ekphrastic Mnemonics. Ekphrastic Mnemonics alludes to the ancient descriptions of lost works of art, and of our efforts to reconstruct them through copies, associations, and images already in existence. Benítez’s paintings are an interpretation of ancient Greek and Roman painting, but include an ironic 21st-century twist. Currently Benítez divides his time between Europe and Santa Fe. Since 2002, he has participated in numerous high-profile solo exhibitions and group shows in the United States and abroad. His work is held in private collections and is on permanent display in the New Mexico State Legislature’s public art collection.—AJ 12
