For all of us who can enjoy a long Thanksgiving weekend, Santa Fe is the perfect place to be. All holidays take on a magic here, and this one especially so, with late autumn light, lots of activities, and the special warmth that we all share. Friday night there are lots of gallery openings, including some at the Railyard’s Final Friday. Many galleries, such as downtown’s Manitou, are now showing their miniatures, which are perfect for holiday gift giving. Most Santa Fe clubs are featuring excellent music to satisfy every taste—be sure to check our calendar for what’s happening all over town. Saturday night is the famous Aid and Comfort party at the Eldorado Hotel, in support of the Southwest Care Center. This relaxed evening of dining, dancing, and a silent auction encourages everyone to let it all hang out after Thursday’s feast. After the turkey is gone, you’ll be in the perfect spot to enjoy a late fall weekend full of activities and with no pressure, so get out there and enjoy.

holiday concerts
The Blind Boys of Alabama present a holiday gospel concert at The Lensic.
EVENT If so inclined, one could spend most December evenings at a holiday-themed concert. The Santa Fe Symphony presents their annual Christmas Treasures on December 11th at the Lensic. On the 14th, the Santa Fe Concert Band takes the Lensic’s stage for their annual free concert of carols and other holiday tunes. Choral music fills the halls mid-month as Santa Fe Women’s Ensemble sings at Loretto Chapel and IHM chapel; Schola Cantorum’s sacred music graces Loretto Chapel, the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and other venues; and Santa Fe Desert Chorale reconvenes for seven performances of Northern Light. December 20th, AMP Concerts presents Blind Boys of Alabama at the Lensic with holidaythemed gospel. Performance Santa Fe’s symphony performs with pianist Claire Huangci on Christmas Eve, and then amasses an orchestra and chorus to raise the roof with Beethoven’s majestic Ninth Symphony on New Year’s Eve, both at the Lensic. Santa Fe Pro Musica and pianist Melissa Marse celebrate the end of the year with Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue December 29th, again at the Lensic.—LVS

EVENT In the day-after-Thanksgiving tradition, the Santa Fe Plaza will host the city’s annual treelighting event, starting Friday, November 25, at 3 pm with pre-lighting festivities. At approximately 4 pm , Santa is scheduled to arrive in a vintage fire truck. After dark, at around 6 pm , the Plaza’s trees light up with festive cheer in a variety of colors. Take part in caroling, enjoy the music, sip a hot drink, nibble on biscochitos, and soak in the arrival of the holiday season in Santa Fe. And who knows, there might even be snow!—Amanda Jackson

David Baca: Black & White In Color Pippin Contemporary PREVIEWS 409 Canyon, pippincontemporary.com November 23–December 6, reception November 25, 5–7 pm In his first ever solo show of large-scale paintings at Pippin Contemporary, David Baca exhibits his architectural, linear abstractions that offer a new perspective on color. These works explore palette and perspective, building from monochromatic themes and linear movement. “The endless possibilities of exploring line, color, and form sustain me as an artist,” states Baca. “I find myself revisiting the quality of line by removing color, and the converse is true as well.” Black & White In Color, while aptly named, also allows visitors to witness recurring themes in Baca’s works, including man’s influence on the landscape through architectural references and urban-inspired forms. Shown in various sizes, ranging from 12 x 12" to 70 x 54", Baca’s push-pull compositional style allows for intense study of his works.—Amanda Jackson

Bunny Tobias: Elegance of Mutation Gabriel Craig & Amy Weiks: Kin Radical Jewelry Makeover Artist Project form & concept 435 S Guadalupe formandconcept.center November 23–February 19 Reception November 25, 5–7 pm It’s an unusual weekend at form & concept with three exhibitions opening this Friday night. Bunny Tobias, One Horse Power, metal toy airplane, In Elegance of Mutation, Bunny Tobias debuts lithograph tin toy figure, cast iron toy horse, 5 x 9 x 7" artwork created from reclaimed materials. Tobias, in her solo exhibition of surreal sculptures, promotes her philosophy of recycled art, and for the first time, plans to introduce her thoughts in a manifesto to be revealed at the reception. Artists Gabriel Craig and Amy Weiks explore the human history of objects and tools together in Kin, while investigating their own past in the process. Together, the duo creates small objects using various materials. Working toward a unified aesthetic, they lay out objects, eventually composing sculptural collages that intermingle, and finally fuse the pieces together to form sophisticated, wearable sculptures. Radical Jewelry Makeover Artists Project, running in conjunction with Kin, serves to educate jewelers of all levels about mining and material sourcing issues. This monthlong project challenges each of the 22 participating jewelers to create one-of-a-kind pieces from the tangled chains, unmatched earrings, and damaged bracelets long discarded in the bottoms of jewelry boxes. Sales from the items produced during this project will go to benefit the nonprofit organization Ethical Metalsmiths. There will be a lecture about the exhibition and ethical material sourcing on December 3 at 2 pm with Ethical Metalsmiths’ board member Jenn Carroll Wilson.—AJ SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION
