When well-known local artist Roseta Santiago and I developed the Canyon Road Paint Out, our primary goal was to allow art lovers and enthusiasts the opportunity to interact with artists as they work, and to see a painting being created. We were hoping for meaningful interaction—a simple yet pure motive. Eight years later, the Canyon Road Paint & Sculpt Out has become one of our community’s signature events. Many of Canyon Road's galleries have embraced it, inviting more distant artists and scheduling concurrent exhibitions. I am so gratified to see how many artists have taken advantage of this interaction with art lovers. Many a painting is sold right off the easel, much to the joy of all involved. Then came the children. Always looking for a charity angle, we invited local schoolchildren to perform music in front of the galleries and in a parade up Canyon Road. Their joy, talent, and smiling faces brought the feeling of community that embodies what Canyon Road represents to all of us. Moreover, it helps raise money for music programs in our local schools. I encourage you to join us this weekend for the Canyon Road Paint & Sculpt Out—especially on Saturday, when art, artists, children, music, fall colors, and smiling faces come together to form the magic of a generous, loving, and cohesive community that celebrates the creative process in all forms.

Barkin’ Ball
On October 18, BlackShirtReads, a live screenplay reading series, presents Across the Amazons—the true adventures of 18th-century aristocrat Isabel Grameson Godin. Against her family’s wishes, Isabel, accompanied by her two brothers and a young nephew, a crew of personal servants, a doctor and his traveling companions, and numerous Indian guides, attempts to navigate the treacherous jungle in an effort to rejoin her husband in French Guiana. Written by Santa Fe–based screenwriter Laura K. Marsh and directed by Barbara Hatch, this quarterfinalist in the Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition is full of suspense. BlackShirtReads’ Kathleen Dexter adds, “This is the first performance for BlackShirtReads in which all principals are women—two women producing, a woman writing, a woman directing, and a woman in the leading character role. We’re very pleased about this.”—Amanda Jackson reading

EVENT Ah, Santa Feans and their dogs. Is there another city where pooches are welcome in so many businesses, where most banks hand out biscuits at the drive-up windows, and where restaurant patios are often dogfriendly? October 14th brings a chance to dig out your dog’s tuxedo and head to the 20th annual Barkin’ Ball to benefit the Santa Fe Animal Shelter. Cocktails, dinner, music, a boutique, and live and silent auctions all raise money for the local animals that don’t have homes, much less formal wear.—Lisa Van Sickle
Left: Olga Kern has taken top honors in several of the world’s most prestigious piano competitions.

Timeless West, Timeless Meaning Sorrel Sky 125 W Palace, sorrelsky.com Through October 31 Timeless West, Timeless Meaning brings together two artists, Jim Bagley and Laura Bruzzese, to exhibit their respective paintings and sculptures depicting their interpretation of the unchanging aspects of the West. Both artists choose to portray the meteorological, geologic, and botanical beauty of the region, with vast skies stretching over low horizons. The manmade is rarely present among the skies, clouds, mountain peaks, and wildflowers. Sorrel Sky Gallery owner Shanan Campbell Wells states, “Looking at the works of Jim and Laura, it is so clear that they each take to heart the timeless beauty of the Western landscape.” Bagley, an Oregon native now living in Colorado, often works en plein air, creating oil paintings of the contemporary Western landscape. Bruzzese paints “in the round,” merging her background with painting and applying it to her porcelain vessels.—AJ October 13, 2016 NOW 19

Pippin’s new work emphasizes her move from a dramatic use of color to a softer palette utilizing iridized and duochrome paints. These paints allow her to create depth through the use of layering, encouraging viewers to explore the surface of her works. As an abstract artist, Pippin states, “My paintings are about energy (vibration), color, and freedom. My work has a spiritual bent and is a result of continual exploration. I believe that true art comes from within and color is central to my individual expression.”—AJ
