It’s Halloween, our excuse to portray the fantasy persona that lies within each of us. Santa Fe offers a variety of themed activities this weekend, along with a pleasant selection of events that have nothing to do with ghosts and goblins. Meow Wolf has been celebrating Halloween all month, and will continue through this weekend with House of Halloween. Saturday night, they’re hosting a Dance Monster party. There are lots of other events around town, giving you plenty of opportunity to pull out that costume and be whatever you want to be—which, coincidently, is the way Santa Fe normally is on any day. For something completely different, are you aware of the life drawing opportunity at Duel Brewing Co. each Monday? Bring your sketch supplies and draw from a live model, while enjoying a beverage or meal. Is that not a novel idea for a community as artistic as Santa Fe? Enjoy this most festive Halloween weekend, and be exactly who you are.
My Life with Words and Music Rita Moreno at The Lensic
EVENT The Lensic presents Rita Moreno—stage, film, and television treasure—in the one-night event, Rita Moreno: My Life with Words and Music. It will be an evening filled with anecdotes, stories, and songs with piano accompaniment as she takes the audience from her upbringing in Puerto Rico through her legendary career, which spans seven decades. Winner of the elusive EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony), Moreno’s awards also include being honored by The Kennedy Center for lifetime artistic achievement; by President George W. Bush in 2004 with a Presidential Medal of Freedom; and with an American National Medal of the Arts in 2009 by President Obama.—Amanda Jackson

CELEBRATION Inspired by the New Mexico History Museum’s long-term exhibition Setting the Standard: The Fred Harvey Company and Its Legacy, this three-day event begins Friday at 10 am and continues through Sunday afternoon. Friday starts with lectures and discussions with various experts, including Steve Harvey, son of Byron Harvey III, who will discuss the journals, extensive collections, and materials that he has donated to museums around the nation; and Jennifer Kimball, co-owner of La Fonda on the Plaza, a one-time Harvey House. At 5:30 pm, the Santa Fe School of Cooking will offer a Fred Harvey cooking class, with 20 percent of the proceeds going to support the History Museum’s public programs and exhibitions. Saturday’s events continue in Las Vegas, NM, with a model train show and presentation, which will also include period jewelry, signs, and pins from the collection of Skip Gentry, who amassed Harvey memorabilia for over 30 years. There will be family-friendly activities as well. Sunday will conclude the weekend events with a Fred Harvey-inspired family brunch in the NMHM lobby. Walt Gonske, Picuris Pueblo Land, oil on panel, 22 x 30"
This weekend, Sorrel Sky hosts the 8th National Plein Air Painters of New Mexico Juried Members Show. Members each submit four paintings they have produced over the last two years to a jury committee, which then selects the art to exhibit. This year’s jury included American landscape painter Clive R. Tyler, Sorrel Sky Gallery owner Shanan Campbell Wells, and last year’s Best of Show winner Cecilia Robertson. The opening reception takes place Friday evening, from 5–8 pm. On Saturday from noon to 3 pm, Jeff Legg, Judge of Awards and Master Signature member of Oil Painters of America, will demonstrate still life oil painting. Three more painting demonstrations by other PAPNM members (Lee MacLeod, Damien Gonzales, and Lee McVey) will take place on Sunday at 10 am, 12:30 pm, and 2:30 pm.—Amanda Jackson 12

4 New Artists: Wesley Anderegg, Heather Bradley, Heidi Brandow, & Matthew Mullins form & concept 435 S Guadalupe formandconcept.center Reception October 28, 5–7 pm Four new artists have been added to form & concept’s already impressive list of creative talents. Coinciding with the last Friday Art Walk in the Railyard Arts District, visitors will have a chance to meet three of the artists and experience their work. California-based ceramicist Wesley Anderegg sculpts figurative pieces that investigate humanity and daily life. His figures engage in commonplace activities, and are at once both charming and strange. Anderegg states, “Many of my figures are missing teeth, to represent life’s challenges and hard knocks, but they are survivors, still doing their thing day in and day out.” Heather Bradley, a local potter, creates variations on a theme, working in multiples and repetition. Her forms are both functional and decorative, expressing an obsessive determination and love for the process, but with room for each piece to have individual imperfections and character. Multidisciplinary artist Heidi Brandow produces works that deal with personal identity by questioning authority and deconstructing mainstream assumptions about Native Americans. Herself half Hawaiian and half Diné, she engages personal, cultural, and historical experiences while incorporating critical theory. Matthew Mullins, painter, states, “By painting nature, I’m looking for connection and harmony with nature (in a world that can prevent that feeling). I believe that humans are a part of the natural world, but that our society and habits create a feeling of separateness from nature.” His paintings draw upon traditional quilt patterns overlaid on scenes of forests and mountains. The juxtaposition of geometric designs and organic forms suggest methods of searching for harmony and creating connection.—Amanda Jackson

Long Echo Center for Contemporary Arts 1050 Old Pecos Trl ccasantafe.org October 28–January 15 Reception October 28, 5–8 pm Presented by codirectors Alex Gill and Kyle Farrell of Strangers Collective, Long Echo intends to transform the Center for Contemporary Art’s Cinematheque lobby gallery into a diverse art exhibition. According to Gill, “Long Echo comes at a time when many of us are delving into past experiences. These conceptual and aesthetic elements are ringing out again in clearer and stronger ways.” Adds Farrell, the show addresses, “How do you concentrate your creative power?” The goal of the exhibition is to challenge visitors to rethink the role of emerging visual art, writing, music, and dance and the links among them in the broader community. In addition to the exhibition, Strangers Collective will host a series of to-be-announced events during the 11-week show. These events include a panel discussion and round-table gathering, as well as performance installations.—AJ October 27, 2016 NOW 13
