publisher’s note
The LOCALs’ season of culture has arrived. The various international art markets are all behind us, the streets are a bit quieter, and restaurant reservations are hardly needed now that the summer crowds are gone. The many opportunities to attend artistic and cultural events still abound, but with easy entry. Of course, this weekend, there’s a full bounty of Santa Fe’s best musicians playing all over town. Our calendar will help you decide which ones to see, whether your interest is in classical or rock. This is also the perfect weekend for a short, pleasant drive to the Pojoaque River and High Road art tours, just north of us. Experiencing the working locations of artists is enlightening—a rare opportunity to enter their homes and see into their lives and creative processes. Among many added benefits to this tour is the fact that it’s a delightful excursion through the Northern New Mexico countryside. Moreover, this wonderful weather provides a chance to get out and enjoy life in the many ways that Santa Fe offers.

26th Annual Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta Richard Gonzales
The 26th Annual Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta is right around the corner, September 21 through 25. Beginning Wednesday and ending Sunday, the event features five full days of wine, food, seminars, and other events, including a bike ride and a golf classic. There will be a live auction luncheon at the Eldorado Hotel on Thursday to benefit Santa Fe’s culinary arts programs, and a reserve wine tasting and silent auction at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center on Friday to benefit Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta education programs. All events are 21+ only, and tickets must be purchased in advance.—AJ
Renaissance Fair at El Rancho de las Golondrinas Jousting, sword fights, magic shows, oh my! This year’s annual Renaissance Fair will take place the third weekend in September at the popular living history museum El Rancho de las Golondrinas, just south of town. There will be plenty to see and do at this community event, from belly dancers and jugglers to Celtic games and medieval cooking demonstrations. Look for Clan Tynker, jousting tournaments, swordplay, and strolling minstrels, and the tiny set can visit the fairy village, complete with sword school, storytelling, and fairy dance classes. The fair’s proceeds help fund the educational programs of El Rancho de las Golondrinas, as well as the Santa Fe School for Arts and Sciences.—Amanda Jackson

The annual interactive, energetic, and—well—progressive AHA (After Hours Alliance) Festival takes place around town in midSeptember. This multidisciplinary event includes concerts as well as works by visual and performance artists. On Saturday, September 17, the festival pays tribute to what AHA terms as The Art of The Machine, a celebration of machine-based and machine-inspired art forms at the old Club Alegria. On Sunday, the festival takes on the atmosphere of an art fair at the Railyard, with more than 20 artists’ booths, two music stages, and performances. Interaction and conversation are highly encouraged in this family-friendly event.—Anne Maclachlan

Smith Design, LLC We interpret the beauty of New Mexican aesthetic into an engaging and real-living space, with a focus on the Land of Enchantment’s rich cultural history. For over 30 years, our designers—Megan Smith, Robin Smith, and Janen Korth (partners, sisters, and 10th-generation New Mexicans)—have been building lasting partnerships with clients in both the local and international hospitality and residential design world. Our belief is that creativity is both an art and a science; form must follow function. Our approach incorporates facets of geography, history and culture, in-depth research, custom designs, and our use of local artisans. Wiseman & Gale & Duncan Wiseman & Gale & Duncan Interiors is led by Pam Duncan, a respected part of the Santa Fe design community since 1993. A fine arts graduate from the University of Arizona, Pam has established one of Santa Fe’s leading design firms and has put together an accomplished team of interior designers. The other esteemed members of the Wiseman & Gale & Duncan Interiors design group include Gloria Devan and Buffy Kline. Gloria earned her degree in interior architecture from the California College of Arts & Crafts. The essence of Gloria’s work is the relationship between art and design; sharing in both worlds the same search for beauty and quality. Buffy Kline, a licensed interior designer and NCIDQ certificate holder, has designed homes and projects across the United States. Buffy strives to bring a client’s lifestyle and design aesthetic to a crossroads that creates an exceptionally designed space, while still allowing for life to play out with ease within that space. Since Susan’s focus is on education, it is not an intimidating place to visit. “We want a customer to be comfortable coming in and talking with us at the master sommelier level,” Bowlin emphasizes. “…But at the same time, we want someone to walk in and say, ‘Well, I’m going over to my neighbor’s for dinner and I want to bring some wine.’”—Amanda Jackson Susan’s Fine Wine and Spirits, “Champagne and Bubbles from Pernod Ricard,” September 21, 2:30–3:30 pm, $50 per person, “Current Release Seghesio Tasting with Ted Seghesio,” September 22, 2:30–3:30 pm, $50 per person, 1005 S St. Francis, holdmyticket.com/event/250531 September 15, 2016 NOW 11

On September 21 and 22, Susan’s Fine Wine and Spirits will host two “sip and study” seminars. These events, each limited to 25 people, offer two very different experiences. For those with champagne taste, Wednesday’s seminar, “Champagne and Bubbles from Pernod Ricard,” will present a tasting with a representative from wine distributor Pernod Ricard. It will include G.H. Mumm—the Santa Fe Wine & Chile Festival’s Champagne of the Year—Perrier-Jouët Champagne, and Mumm Napa sparkling wine. In a more traditional wine tasting, Thursday’s seminar, “Current Release Seghesio Tasting with Ted Seghesio,” will feature Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta Honoré of the Year Ted Seghesio, who will be on hand for a sampling of six Seghesio Winery current releases. The Seghesio family, fifth-generation vintners, has grown zinfandel grapes in California for 120 years. As a bonus, each seminar participant will receive a bottle of either G.H. Mumm Champagne or Seghesio after the session. Susan’s Fine Wine and Spirits holds other seminars and events with tastings throughout the year and during the holiday season, and often there’s a tasting of distilled spirits. Frank Bowlin, one of the four original founders of Susan’s, is particularly excited about an A rack of rosés—as beautiful upcoming talk and tasting of wines from Baja in the bottle as they will be on California, Mexico. Says Bowlin, “We had a very the dinner table tonight. surprising distributor tasting of wines from Baja […] and they were spectacular,” adding, “because of the history of Mexican wines not being very good and the fact that there hasn’t been much distribution before, we want to introduce them with a seminar; and we are going to bring the importer up and have him conduct a seminar or two.”

PREVIEWS Rogues and Reinas Blue Rain Gallery 544 S Guadalupe blueraingallery.com September 16–30 Reception September 23, 5–7 pm Erin Currier’s new series of work, Rogues and Reinas, celebrates individuals. Situated within the framework of portraiture, part collage and wholly humanist, Currier depicts two types of people—“By ‘rogue’ I am referring to someone who is mischievous: a rebel who resists or defies authority or convention; ‘reina’ is the eminent and supreme feminine: a self-sovereign queen who rules her own world.” Often, she needn’t look any further than New Mexico. The majority of her portraits are important figures from this state, from Taos’s Fiesta Queen and Princesses, to land rights leader Reies Tijerina, and even the “Fastest Nun in the West,” Sister Blandina Segale. Currier does not shy away from portraying widely recognized figures, too, including mixed martial arts champion Holly Holm and the late boxer Johnny Tapia. Currier states, “If there is one single unifying force that unites all of the individual rogues and reinas whom I have portrayed in this new series, it is that they are all fighters: not just fighting for belts, but also fighting to uphold cultural traditions, to preserve the natural world, and to defend those who cannot defend themselves against police brutality and corporate abuse.” A fantastic and worthwhile exhibition to see, indeed.—Amanda Jackson Erin Currier, Holly Holm, acrylic and mixed media on panel, 48 x 36"

Adam Shaw: Pursuit of the Present Pippin Contemporary, 409 Canyon pippincontemporary.com Through September 28, reception September 16, 5–7 pm Pippin Contemporary announces a new selection of poetry-inspired artworks by California painter Adam Shaw. Shaw’s latest series of compositions embrace the thick textures of his previous works, while also plunging further into his exploration of language and image in relation to metaphysical and philosophical themes. These dynamic works carry an intense energy formed by bold layers of added and removed paint. “My eyes do not distinguish between abstract and representational,” he says, “for when observed closely, what is more abstract than upturned earth, the bark of a tree, the skin of a pomegranate, or the detail of a sleeve painted by Titian?”—Stephanie Love
