LETTER
FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO AND BOARD CHAIR
Dear Friends,
Every day, we are guided by our vision of a thriving northern New Mexico, where all people can find opportunity, build connections, and contribute to the well-being of their communities. We recognize, of course, that no single grant, individual, or organization can get us there alone.
As a community foundation, we are at the intersection of many community partnerships and efforts. We have the privilege of bringing people together from diverse backgrounds and perspectives to work collaboratively in addressing our region’s most pressing needs and building upon our collective strengths.
This year’s annual report offers a glimpse into our community-based approach to philanthropy — and how our values of equity, perseverance, listening, and generosity show up in our work each day. From celebrating our 30-year legacy of stewarding identity-based giving circles, to supporting innovative organizations working to improve access to
education, health, and civic opportunities, we hope you’re inspired by the work happening within our walls and on the ground to build a better future for us all.
Thank you to our donors, partners, friends, and extended community for joining us in driving positive change for our shared home.
With gratitude,

Christopher Goett | President & CEO

A. Dion Silva | Board Chair

Community Leadership
To meet the needs of our community today and far into the future, we build endowments that ensure grants are always available to support our region, convene diverse voices and groups to work on solutions to local issues, and foster greater giving across northern New Mexico.

Giving Circles
UPLIFTING COMMUNITY-LED, EQUITY-BASED PHILANTHROPY
The Santa Fe Community Foundation has a long legacy of living its value of equity through the stewardship of identity-based giving circles. These philanthropic groups bring individuals together who share a common identity — such as race, sexual orientation, or cultural background — to support causes that are important to their community by pooling resources and collectively deciding how to distribute funds.

Native American Advised Fund
In 2023, we celebrated 30 years of service for the Native American Advised Fund (NAAF). Founded by worldrenowned artist Allan Houser (Chiricahua Fort Sill Apache), NAAF has continued to support Indigenousserving nonprofits in New Mexico through the leadership of an all-Native advisory committee.

Envision Fund (LGBTQ+)
Since the 1990s, we have also proudly been the home of the Envision Fund, New Mexico’s first and largest philanthropic entity dedicated to LGBTQ+ causes in New Mexico. Led by an advisory committee representative of New Mexico’s diverse LGBTQ+ community, Envision has granted over $1 million since its inception.
Empower! Black Futures Community Fund
In 2023, the Santa Fe Community Foundation launched its third and newest statewide giving circle, the Empower! Black Futures Community Fund, to support Black life, arts, and culture in New Mexico. Through targeted grants, strategic partnerships, and an equitable approach to community philanthropy, the Empower! Black Futures Community Fund will foster Black artistic expression, preserve cultural heritage, and promote community development for generations to come.
I am indebted to my ancestors for their hard work and sacrifice. I am their wildest dream, and this fund will support our wildest dreams for what future generations can be, create, and manifest.
Learning Hub
NURTURING NONPROFIT LEADERSHIP & EFFECTIVENESS OUR VALUE / COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP
Building on our values of equity, perseverance, listening, and generosity, our Learning Hub programming is designed to nurture a strong and sustainable nonprofit sector in northern New Mexico. We’re grateful to the 72 facilitators and guest speakers who shared their lived and learned experiences during 39 learning opportunities this year.
In total, our Learning Hub welcomed 1,100+ participants to our 2023 programs, which included Fundraising Immersion, Executive Director Learning Circle, and Nonprofit Board Fundamentals, among others. These programs focused on leadership support, skills strengthening, round-table discussions, and peer connection.
Notably, we launched a new program this year designed specifically for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) staff and board members. Despite New Mexico being a minority-majority state, BIPOC individuals are underrepresented in nonprofit leadership positions.
Facilitated by Sunshine Muse, the Executive Director of Black Health New Mexico, BIPOC Leaders Growing Nonprofit Power Together welcomed 200+ participants to sessions that created a safe environment for peer learning, community building, and the sharing of emerging best practices.

WORKING WITH GENEROUS COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO ADDRESS LOCAL NEEDS
The partnership between the Santa Fe Community Foundation and community members looking to give back is incredibly powerful. Our deep knowledge of and relationships with local nonprofits, combined with the trust of many donors in our sound investment philosophy and fund management, have resulted in over 40 years of building positive outcomes across northern New Mexico.
In 2023, 75% of grants made from donor advised funds supported New Mexico-based organizations. In fact, our donor advised fundholders more than doubled the total funding regional nonprofits received from the Santa Fe Community Foundation — proving our impact is stronger when we work together. SCAN

DONOR SPOTLIGHT
I have loved the opportunity to be part of educational sessions where nonprofits and philanthropists come together to hear about needs and what is going on in the community. The Foundation is fantastic at advising — not pushing you in one direction or another. If you have an area of interest, they will help you identify nonprofits that align with your interests.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT
Once we moved to Santa Fe, we wanted to be more local and have the expertise of a local resource. When we learned about the Santa Fe Community Foundation and all that it offers, for us, it was the perfect way to carry out our philanthropic giving. The Foundation gives us the reassurance that our funds are being put to the best use because of its close understanding of what is going on in the community. We love that the Santa Fe Community Foundation introduces us to needs and nonprofits that we might not otherwise know about.

Dollars4Schools
PROVIDING CRITICAL SUPPORT TO LOCAL TEACHERS & CLASSROOMS
Our Dollars4Schools program is committed to supporting Santa Fe’s public school teachers — ensuring they have what they need for their students and their classrooms. From books and math tools to science kits, school supplies, and warm winter coats, Dollars4Schools is a trusted local resource for student success. One hundred percent of every dollar donated to Dollars4Schools goes directly into a Santa Fe classroom.
Thanks to Dollars4Schools, we purchased 10 libraries for classroom teachers, including 450 books per library. The libraries were given to teachers from Title I schools, and included professional development focused on management of independent reading and instruction in small groups to move students through the levels. Thank you for your generous donations in support of SFPS literacy growth.

In total, the Santa Fe Community Foundation awarded $935,000 to 81 nonprofits serving Mora, Rio Arriba, San Miguel, and Santa Fe counties as part of its 2023 community grants program.

Animal Welfare
We believe the health and well-being of our region’s domestic and wild animals should be protected. Our animal welfare endowment provides grants that support population control, animal cruelty prevention and well-being, and the reintroduction and conservation of native New Mexico species.

This grant is a big deal and has helped us with food and other costs to keep our center in good shape. Recently, we were able to release a Golden Eagle that came in with West Nile Virus. We took him back to Grants, New Mexico, where he was found on the ground at a ranch. He flew very high up at his release, which is always a good sign. Altitude equals health for Eagles. We’ve also had several intakes of Raptors all the way from Tucumcari and the Navajo Nation, and as close as Santa Fe. A baby Barn Owl came in on a hay truck. She was there for three days, and her siblings had died due to dehydration. Once we got her back on her feet, we put her in with a foster Barn Owl mom. She is starting to fly now and is doing great.
Arts & Culture
Art is an integral part of every community’s identity, reflecting both its history and vision for the future. We support local nonprofits working to ensure our region’s diverse arts and culture are celebrated and reflected in the community.

GRANTEE HIGHLIGHT: WISE FOOL NEW MEXICO “ ”
Wise Fool is proud to support the artistry of local performers and to enrich the cultural fabric of Santa Fe. Audience responses to [our recent show, Beyond the Binary], described feeling inspired by the power and dedication of young people to change the world, the importance of youthled queer stories, and thoughtful anti-colonial storytelling. One audience member said, Beyond the Binary allowed me to see a full range of nonbinary and gender nonconforming folks of all ages. I loved being able to see myself in them on stage, to feel represented and seen. The storyline was powerful, the performances heartfelt and raw. It challenges me to see outside of normal constructs of our day to day and connect with a more universal through line.’

One participant, Kim, who is a local business owner, said, ‘I learned the power of paying attention to what you’re spending and where.’ We are so grateful to the Santa Fe Community Foundation for the funds to support this incredible work.

The clients we serve receive little or no additional food assistance, so the meals and food boxes we provide are crucial to their basic needs. In 2023, we had an increase of approximately 37% in our clientele and served a total of 56,330 meals. To meet the needs of our clients, we have made our daily menus easier for our volunteers to prepare and serve, and we have increased the number of emergency meals we have on hand to use as a backup if we do not have enough meals for a specific day.
