An Unplugged Experience tapping into nature at los flores park If you’ve come to Santa Maria Valley to escape from the everyday, you’ve come to the right place. We’re all about setting our away message, shutting down that phone, and clocking out to tap in. For the ultimate Do Not Disturb experience, we’re huge fans of Los Flores Ranch Park, a firstof-its-kind, 1,778-acre open-space area in Santa Maria Valley that offers an array of outdoor activities for nature-lovers and off-the-clockers of all kinds.

8

SantaMariaValley.com

HIKING With 15 miles of hiking trails and tons of wildlife to view along the way, one of the best ways to unplug on your Santa Maria trip is to enjoy a hike in Los Flores Ranch Park. Guided tours and group nature walks are available for those seeking a little more structure and some nature education (you’ll learn tons of fun-facts about the park’s geology, plants, and animals)—or, simply pick up a trail map and head into the park on your own.

HORSEBACK RIDING With plenty of trails to explore and a special entrance for equestrians, Los Flores Park makes for an incredibly serene setting for horseback riding. Terrain is varied, and you’ll even find a few options for panoramic vista points that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Be sure to download a Los Flores Ranch Park trail map for the horse corral location and more.

MOUNTAIN BIKING With miles and miles of trails and terrain to explore, Los Flores Ranch Park is the perfect setting for both experienced and beginner mountain bikers alike. Rolling hills and panoramic vista points make for varied terrain...and a ton of two-wheeled fun.

ANIMAL FEEDING & WILDLIFE VIEWING We’re all about unplugging, but we have to admit: with acres of landscape to explore and everything from donkeys to goats to feed, we wouldn’t blame you for snapping a few pics and sharing this interactive experience with your social media friends. Once you’ve made friends with the fourlegged animals roaming the park, turn your eyes to the sky for a glimpse of flycatchers, kingbirds, grosbeaks, and warblers as they soar through the oaks during migration.

SANTA MARIA VALLEY BORN & RAISED From the time I can remember, there’s always been tractors and mud on the road, that farming and ranching lifestyle. for the wicked. If you want to get things done, you gotta just go to it. That’s how it is. Being with the family; my wife and kids is how I spend most of my time, doing anything outdoors. Last year, unfortunately I got hurt and was home from July on. While I was home, I held four steer wrangling clinics and being able to do that was pretty cool. I want to give back to the sport and it’s something I’ll continue doing, even after I’m done rodeoing.

THE PERFECT GRAND FINALE TO ANY ROAD TRIP IS A COLD BEER AND SOME LEGENDARY BARBECUE. Although our reputation is pretty well known along the west coast, some travelers may be surprised to learn that Santa Maria Style barbecue actually comes from a place, right here in the heart of the Central California Coast. We slow-roast our tri-tip using the same recipe our grandparents’ grandparents used. From classic steakhouses like Shaw’s to

A Day at the Dunes an insider’s guide to three unforgettable outdoor adventures

The largest remaining dune system south of San Francisco, The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes offer endless opportunities for authentic, Santa Maria Style adventure. Encompassing an 18-mile stretch of coastline, we’ve scoured the sandy setting to bring you three not-to-be-missed experiences from a day at the dunes.

12

SantaMariaValley.com

01 GO WILDLIFE WATCHING AT THE RANCHO GUADALUPE DUNES PRESERVE COUNTY PARK Tucked away inside the sprawling Guadalupe Dunes is the Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve, home to 550-foot tall dunes (the tallest on the entire west coast) and an extraordinarily unique ecosystem. With opportunities for everything from hiking to fishing to bird-watching, we happen to think the Preserve is the best area along the entire coast to reconnect with nature and unplug from the everyday. The Preserve is home to a wide variety of bird species and wildlife, so be sure to bring along a pair of binos—keep your eyes peeled for everything from snowy egrets to the western snowy plover. Cost: Free | Hours: Daily, 7 a.m. - dusk (with restrictions from March 1 - Oct 1 for plover nesting season) Tip: Walk along the ocean to Mussel Point (a 2.5 mile hike from the parking lot) for some seriously serene views. Or, pack a blanket and a cooler and treat yourself to an al-fresco oceanfront meal.

02 SOAK IN THE VIEWS AT OSO FLACO LAKE With walks suitable for any age and expansive views of the surrounding landscape, Oso Flaco Lake is a must-visit locale for anyone looking to find some serious serenity on their Santa Maria visit. This surprisingly woodsy area is home to spanish moss and marshy grasess, and feels more like a far-away forest than sandy dunes. The natural canopy supports an incredibly wide array of wildlife, including the sweetest songbirds you’ve ever heard. (Parking here will also give you easy access to the Preserve.) Cost: $5 parking per vehicle | Hours: Daily, Sunrise-Sunset

Tip: Head out onto the mile-long boardwalk over the lake for a viewing platform that offers an incredible look at the entire San Luis Bay.

03 KICK UP SOME DUST AT OCEANO For those who think of riding when they think of sand dunes, Oceano is for you. Bringing in over 2 million visitors each year, the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is the only area within the Guadalupe Dunes where vehicles are allowed on the beach. With five-and-a-half miles of open beachfront, be sure to bring your quads and dirt bikes and get ready for a day of downright-dusty fun. Cost: $5 parking per vehicle | Hours: Daily, 6:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m.

Pedal to the Pinot talking the bike + bottle project with dave corey of core winery

22

SantaMariaValley.com

What was the inspiration behind the Bike + Bottle project? The idea was to combine my two passions—cycling and grape growing— with my knowledge of California’s Central Coast to offer an experience visitors wouldn’t otherwise get. We wanted to offer an expert guide and a local insider’s look at the area—not just a typical wine tour.

From start to finish, what can someone expect from the Bike + Bottle experience? Every tour is unique to each group—the experience is super flexible and varies depending on a group’s skill level, what wineries work with their travel dates, etc. Tours can range anywhere from 1-3 days, and we’ll

relationships and can “talk the talk” with fellow grape-growers, which means they’re much more receptive to a Bike + Bottle group than they can be to a typical wine group where the tour guide doesn’t know the industry well and has no relationship with the winery owners. This allows us more access to wineries (even during harvest season) and a much more personalized experience.

So you’ve been on the central coast for a while? My family has a long history in Santa Maria Valley that dates back to 1873. I grew up visiting the area and moved here in 1996, then started CORE Winery in 2001.

take care of setting up accommodations, transportation, rides and lunch throughout your stay.

What’s a typical ride like? A typical ride is a circuit-type ride or a loop, and we’ll visit no more than 2-3 wineries, as we don’t want to over-saturate the experience. We’ll ride past vineyards and talk about when each started, what kind of wines they’re known for, any cultural practices, etc. We’ll later come back to one of those wineries for a tasting and a great, local lunch.

How many people are on a Bike + Bottle ride, and are there options for private groups (bachelor parties, etc.)? Right now, we’re solely focused on private groups, which allows us to completely customize each tour. Groups can range anywhere from a couple wanting to do a single, one-day tour of Central Coast wineries, to a group of 10 (or more) booking a three-day experience. Pricing also varies depending on how many are in your group.

How experienced of cyclist should someone be to join? It’s really for all levels. Once I understand your group’s needs, I’ll customize a route, and we’ll go over a course profile beforehand. You’ll know exactly what to expect—whether that’s a flat 20-mile ride, or a 45-mile ride with hills.

Do you provide the bikes? We don’t—everyone brings his or her own bike, which is how most cyclists prefer to ride. An ill-fitted bike from a rental shop can result in an uncomfortable ride or even knee issues.

What do you love most about Santa Maria Valley? The authenticity—I really enjoy that. People are pretty real here. You also can’t beat the weather and the ability to go outside year-round. It’s just an

Do you ever make any stops for the beer-lovers in the group? Of course. We can even do a tour that’s solely breweries. We could do a point-to-point ride from Naughty Oak Brewery in Orcutt to its second location in San Ynez. Around Santa Maria Valley, we’d visit great places like Santa Maria Brewing or Rooney’s Irish Pub—places that brew here locally. We always stick to authentic and local.

What’s the best way for someone to book a group Bike + Bottle tour? They can call me directly at (805) 714-5057—I like to connect with people personally so I’m able to customize their experience. We also have Bike + Bottle information listed under the “Wine Experiences” section of our website at COREwine.com.

How far in advance should someone reach out to start building their tour? If they’re coming on a weekday (which we always recommend for a better experience and full access to wineries—owners often aren’t around on the

24

weekends), they can reach out a few weeks in advance. If they’re coming on a weekend or during a time that coincides with an event (i.e. car shows in Santa Maria), they should reach out at least one month or so in advance.

What do you love most about Bike + Bottle? As a cyclist, it’s bringing a whole experience together where a visitor can exercise, have great food, enjoy great wine and meet new people. I also love its flexibility—it’s really unique in that way. My knowledge of the area allows me to change things on the fly if need be—we can add wineries if we have extra time, alter the route of it’s too difficult or not difficult enough, etc. I love that our tours aren’t so dogmatic—it’s all about creating a truly authentic experience and tailoring that experience to work for each individual group.

“In my mind, Susan personifies the authentic hospitality and rich history of the Santa Maria Valley,” said Laura Booras, general manager of Riverbench Vineyard & Winery. “Through her Susie Q’s Brand products, which we proudly sell in our tasting room, she offers a taste of the local food culture to people around the world. And even though she is somewhat of a local celebrity, her humble demeanor makes her very approachable – which is why I personally use her as a resource on everything related to Santa Maria Valley food, farming and ranch life.” “Susie has created a place where guests and locals alike can come and enjoy the cuisine of Santa Maria Valley,” said Clarissa Nagy, owner and winemaker at Nagy Wines. “She has the gift of making a stranger feel as though they have been a part of our community for years. Her spice blend is known worldwide. I have guests who come looking for Susie Q to take home with them to share the Santa Maria experience with loved ones.” Susie Q’s products are available at retail outlets in California and a handful of other states, including Costco stores, and have created a business that complements the family’s ranching enterprise and lifestyle. Next time you’re in the Santa Maria Valley, gather ‘round with some barbecue — the way local families do. Or, take Susie Q’s with you to enjoy a little bit of Santa Maria Style at home.

THE SWEETEST STRAWBERRIES

isn’t just a slab of meat and some sauce—it’s a downrightdelicious, all-encompassing

...home to a centuriesold barbecue secret that’s come to been known across the world as Santa Maria Style

experience.

Santa Maria Valley happens to be home to some of the ripest, juiciest, largest strawberries in the country—and it’s all thanks to our yearround growing season and cool, coastal climate. With warm winters and cool summers, our moderate climate is a perfect match for the fragile strawberry plant. Our strawberry fields are replanted annually—producing higher quality berries with larger yields year after downright-delicious year. We grow over 10 strawberry varieties in our Valley and harvest over 6,500 acres of berries annually. The best place to find our fresh-from-thefield strawberries? Right here in our Valley—at roadside fruit stands and weekly farmers’ markets, or served up in delicious dishes and desserts at local restaurants. Our strawberries also take center stage each April at the Santa Maria Valley Strawberry Festival at Santa Maria Fairpark.

THE STORY BEHIND OUR FAMOUS BARBECUE Before Sunset Magazine named our Valley’s classic feast the “best barbecue in the world” or California’s Visitor’s Guide dubbed it the “number one food not to miss while visiting California,” there was a single recipe held by our ancestors. It all began in the mid-19th century when rancheros gathered to help each other brand their calves every spring. As a thank you to his fellow vaqueros (America’s first cowboys), the host would prepare a Spanish-style barbecue, consisting of beef barbecued over a red-oak fire, served with Pinquito beans, bread, salsa, and homemade desserts.
