Santa Maria Valley Chamber Expands Support for Education and Workforce Preparation The Santa Maria Valley Chamber has long prioritized support for education, particularly as it ensures a strong local talent pipeline for the workforce. Recognizing that this work is among the most important ways to support our local economy, the Chamber is excited to announce a formal partnership with Partners in Education, a non-profit operating under the Santa Barbara County Education Office (SBCEO). The Chamber has a strong history of collaboration with SBCEO and individual local school districts, supporting programming that connects the business community to local schools and students. The Computer Connections program has provided computers to students in need since its inception in 2002. Events like Principal for a Day and Youth of the Month have showcased local students and leadership in education. By partnering in a more formal and intentional way with SBCEO’s Partners in Education (Partners), the Chamber will expand its impact in developing the local workforce in the Santa Maria Valley. “Santa Barbara County’s students have benefitted from the robust, long-standing partnership we’ve had with the Santa Maria Valley Chamber. The Chamber has been instrumental in connecting local students and schools with the business community,” explained Dr. Susan Salcido, Santa Barbara County Superintendent of Schools. “We are

Ensuring students and families have access to technology by donating gently used computers or hardware to the Computers for Families program, which refurbishes and distributes the equipment • Personally engaging in schoolbased or essential skills-building programs (e.g., career coaching, guest speaking, mock interviews, etc.) “Providing ways for the community to Continued on p.2

We are thrilled to work alongside such a trusted partner to continue strengthening our efforts in Santa Maria.” The partnership between the two organizations aligns with the Chamber’s ongoing efforts in local workforce development. “Being able to collaborate with groups like Partners and leverage our connections with the business community means we can be part of building a strong workforce long before new hires even reach our doors,”

explained Glenn Morris, President/CEO for the Chamber. “We know the work needs to begin early in a young person’s educational journey, and so we are excited our partnership with Partners will do just that—allowing us to provide resources to our future workforce and leaders.” The Chamber will collaborate with Partners by engaging local businesses in the partnership’s programming, convening business and education leaders for an annual State of Education event, and celebrating local successes by highlighting high performing career programs and the youth leaders coming through those pathways. “Santa Maria Valley businesses are always looking to hire locally when possible, and the Chamber is helping assure we

have a strong pool of qualified candidates for our businesses to pull from through creating partnerships like the one with Partners,” explained Edgar Gascon, Board Chair for the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce. “I encourage our business community to get involved in the internship program and other opportunities provided for student development. Not only are you helping our local youth, but you are also ensuring a workforce for your business one day.” Learn more about the partnership and how your business can get involved by visiting santamaria.com/workforcedevelopment or by contacting Molly Schiff, Director of Member & Community Engagement at the Chamber molly@ santamaria.com or (805) 925-2403 x 816.

Young Professional of the Month: Robert Cooks Santa Maria Connect Young Professionals is a Young Professionals program run by the Santa Maria Valley Chamber. Each month, the program will showcase a local young professional. This month's showcase is Robert Cooks, Sales Director for the Best Western Plus Big America Hotel. Talk a bit about yourself. What do you do professionally and what are your hobbies? My name is Robert Cooks and I am the Sales Director for the Best Western Plus Big America Hotel. I enjoy doing anything outdoors but if you're looking for me in my free time you can catch me running, hiking, cycling, mountain biking or exploring someplace new while working up a sweat! I also enjoy listening to all types of music, reading and drinking wine. Biggest challenges/triumphs during the pandemic? The greatest challenge during the pandemic I would have to say would be being torn between wanting to increase numbers and sales while trying to maintain a level of comfortability/safety for staff and guests. Ensuring people that we are taking the right steps to ensure their safety while still making sure our doors remain open. As far as triumphs are concerned, I would have to say the biggest one would be managing 2

to stay open, stay in business while keeping everyone safe. Also, find new and creative ways to maintain some semblance of normalcy in regards to our amenities like breakfast. How are you involved in the community outside of your job? Outside of my job I am also on the Board of Directors for the Guadalupe Dunes Center, the Chamber, and I always enjoy giving back in other ways when an opportunity arises. Why would you encourage other young professionals to get involved/give back to their local community? I try to get other young professionals involved for the reason above, we grew up here in this nurturing community so it only makes sense for us to give back and nurture it. In order to keep our community together, thriving and growing, we all need to do our part to make sure that it continues on the path that was laid down before us. What is your favorite thing about Santa Maria? My favorite thing about Santa Maria is the family feeling that you get from everyone while you're here, strangers will treat you like family and make you feel welcome no matter who you are or where you are from.

Robert Cooks is the Sales Director for the Best Western Plus Big America Hotel in Santa Maria. There has always been a strong sense of community and a willingness to give back and every opportunity as well. I think that if we all maintain those basic standards that the community was built on while continuing to grow and educate ourselves, I don't see how we can't make Santa Maria Valley the best place to live! If you are interested in Santa Maria Connect or have a suggestion for a Young Professional of the Month feature, email Alex Castillo at alex@santamaria.com.

Leadership Santa Maria Valley Unveils Mobile Observatory

Leadership Santa Maria Valley Class of 2020 partnered with the City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department on building a Mobile Observatory for the community. Leadership Santa Maria Valley Class of 2020 recently celebrated the completion of their Legacy Project, a Mobile Observatory, with an unveiling ceremony at Allan Hancock College. "We chose the Mobile Observatory because space and stargazing can open so many doors," explained Leadership class member Emily Kitts. "It's such a fascinating subject to study, and the Observatory can be a way to make that real-life connection for kids who may be interested in STEM, or astronomy. Even if it's not a subject you're inclined to study, space is just so fascinating and surreal. Looking up at the stars, moon and planets offers so much perspective, curiosity and a sense of wonder to kids and adults alike." The observatory was made in collaboration with the City of Santa Maria's Recreation and Parks Department. Kitts says the partnership was fortuitous and the timing worked out perfectly. "The city was in the process of acquiring a trailer for their new Ranch to River mobile nature center. They loved the idea of a mobile observatory, so they generously let us modify the back portion of their nature center trailer for this use," Kitts explained. "They have been so great to work with and so helpful and supportive." "Our partnership with the leadership class has been a great one," said Rudy Gutierrez, Recreation Supervisor for the City of Santa Maria Rec. and Parks Department. "We have really enjoyed the

collaboration on creating a one of a kind outdoor educational opportunity for the community to experience and enjoy for many years!" The mobile observatory will be used at City events and Los Flores Ranch Park. "The Observatory will definitely be used for the public Stargazing events at Los Flores Ranch Park, and other public events, like downtown Fridays or festivals," Kitts explained. "We were even able to purchase a solar telescope, so if the Nature Center travels to a school for a field trip, you can use the Observatory during the day to view the sun!" Kitts said the Leadership Santa Maria Valley Program was educational, and the Legacy Project gave their class a firsthand look on leadership and teamwork. "I think several of us found ourselves taking on roles that we never would have previously guessed, and if offered a lot of insight about how to work effectively in groups," Kitts explained. "The program taught us all a great deal about our city and it's history, a lot about ourselves, and that the saying is true: teamwork really does make the dream work!" Leadership Santa Maria Valley is run by the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce. The 2021 class has already begun, but if you would like to learn more about the program or how to apply for the class of 2022, contact Leadership Santa Maria Valley Program Administrator Terri Oneschuck at terrio@santamaria.com.

Kelsi Fitzgerald Recognized as Chamber Ambassador of the Quarter The Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Club is pleased to recognize Kelsi Fitzgerald of Phoenix Property Inspections and Veritas Innovative Pest & Termite Solutions, as Ambassador of the Quarter for the fourth quarter of 2020! Here's some information about Kelsi: Hello, my name is Kelsi Fitzgerald. I grew up in Fresno, CA until the age of 17 years old when my dad’s job brought us to the Central Coast. I met my son’s father when we were 19 years old. We got married and had our son. Our son, Ethan, is now 26 years old, married, and works at Diablo Canyon in IT. Although my ex-husband and I are no longer together, we have always made our son our priority. I met my “husband” (we are domestic partners) about 5 years ago. Between both of us, we have 4 boys ranging in ages of 11-26 years old. I started my career in the medical industry. I started as a medical assistant and worked my way up to Practice Manager. I have managed up to 3 medical offices at once, so know what it’s like to get an office up and going. Over the past year (2020) we have opened two businesses. We have a Home Inspection business called Phoenix

Property Inspections and a Pest and Termite company called Veritas Innovative Pest & Termite Solutions. Because of my strong history of running and managing Medical Practices, getting these two businesses up and running was almost second nature. Every day is a new adventure and we are constantly learning. My husband and his partners have been in the Pest and Termite business for a combined 75 years. Customer Service is key for me and I like to be as personable as possible with our clients and make them feel like part of our family. On a personal note, I am very much about my family and our combined 4 sons. Living in the moment and making memories is very important to me. I want our kiddos and future grand babies to have fun stories to tell and remember as they get older. I also like to teach our kids how important it is to treat others the way you want to be treated. Kindness is priceless and should be handed out as often as you can. Thank you Kelsi for all you do for our community as a Chamber Ambassador, and congratulations on being Ambassador of the Quarter!
