Santa Maria Valley Springs into Event Season Spring in the Santa Maria Valley means the start to an exciting events season! After a few years of lockdowns and COVID restrictions, the community is gearing up for a full season of local events fun for tourists and visitors alike.

“The major events held in the Santa Maria Valley really offer something for everyone,” explained Jennifer Harrison, Tourism Director for the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce. “From the car show to the strawberry festival, these events are a huge economic driver for our local community, with both locals and visitors enjoying what the Santa Maria Valley has to offer.”

Here are some of the major upcoming events to look forward to this Spring and Summer: Santa Maria Valley Strawberry Festival April 29th – May 1st, Santa Maria Fairpark The Santa Maria Valley Strawberry Festival kicks off the valley’s Strawberry Season, supports local agriculture and encourages the healthy indulgence of strawberries, all in a fun filled, three day weekend community event.

“The Strawberry Festival is a longstanding tradition in the valley. The threeday event attracts families from across California and highlights Santa Barbara County's top agriculture commodity,” explained Caitlin Miller, CEO For the Santa Maria Fairpark.

The Strawberry Festival showcases local talent, and offer a wide variety of interesting things to do and see including a variety of attractions, strawberry tasting and desert eating contests.

traditional carnival, including a full kiddie carnival, commercial displays, and more!

West Coast Kustoms 2022 Cruisin’ Nationals May 27th – 29th, Historic Santa Maria Inn & Santa Maria Fairpark West Coast Kustoms is returning with their famous Cruisin’ Nationals Car Show!

The event will start the Friday May 27th with the world famous Friday night City Cruise in front of the host hotel the Historic Santa Maria Inn on Broadway between Stowell and Cook St. from 7 pm to 9 pm. The cruise is only open to vehicles that are registered for the show.

Then, the event will move to the Santa Maria Fairpark on Saturday and Sunday

2022 Santa Barbara County Fair July 13th -17th, Santa Maria Fairpark Each year, thousands of visitors attend the Santa Barbara County Fair. The Fair showcases the community’s interests and talents, offering a unique assortment of activities to do and see. From jams and jellies, to pies, photography, homemade quilts and floriculture, the Santa Barbara County Fair provides visitors with an interesting mix of both community oriented and educational fun.

The Fair also feature award winning wines, fine art, and plenty of entertainment, including a destruction derby. This agriculturally oriented county fair features the State’s largest junior livestock auction,

along with plenty of other plant and animal based agricultural exhibits.

These major events are just some of the many things to do this Spring and Summer in the Santa Maria Valley. “The great thing about our community it that there’s always something to do,” Harrison explained.

“While these major events are some of the staples, there are also weekly happenings like live music at our local wineries and breweries, comedy night at Cubanissimo Café, and the kite festival and other familyfriendly activities at the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum. It’s rare you’ll find a weekend without something fun going on in the Santa Maria Valley.”

The Santa Maria Valley Chamber has partnered with The County of SB and the SB Foundation to help get information out to fellow businesses about the Microbusiness COVID-19 Relief Grant Program. This program exists to assist microbusinesses that have been impacted by COVID-19 with grant funding up to $2500 The Chamber has continued their “Local Business Spotlight” partnership with the Santa Maria Times, featuring Clarissa Nagy of cnagy Wines for their March spotlight.

The Chamber’s Economic Development Commission assisted a number of businesses with issues including permitting, businesses licenses, site locations and referrals for various needs & services.

The Chamber’s Economic Development Commission assisted new businesses and those looking to start a business with issues including zoning and site location.

The Chamber continues to work with Tesla in identifying new charging locations within the City of Santa Maria.

The Chamber’s Annual Business Expo returned in 2022 with over 70 businesses and over 400 attendees. Fellow business members and members of the community had a chance to engage with one another and re-connect/re-build relationships.

The Chamber partnered with the Home Builders Association of the Central Coast to hear from local experts and engage in a community discussion around the future of housing in our community.

The Chamber hosted a workshop on how to import products from Mexico and what business opportunities are available.

The Chamber continues to hold their weekly “Build Your Business” breakfast meetings, an opportunity for local businesses to network and provide leads and testimonials.

The Chamber launched our second cohort of the Junior CEO program. These students will be gearing up for a 6 week workshop as they prepare to learn about starting their own business.

The Chamber did a tourism photo and video shoot to expand their tourism assets around barbecue, wine, dining and created new assets around disc golf and multigenerational travel.

The Chamber continues to keep their local tourism blog up to date to encourage tourism in the area. Remote Work Reminder: Keep Your Remote Work Policy Up to Date Prior to 2020, the number of employees working remotely or in a “hybrid” manner — a combination of in-office and remote work — was steadily on the rise. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit full-force in spring 2020, the number of remote workers exploded. It’s been a long road since then, and with face covering and workplace safety rules relaxing, many companies may finally be bringing their employees back to the workplace — whether full time or hybrid — while some may keep remote work in place.

Either way, for many employers — especially in certain industries — the chances are that remote/hybrid work is here to stay in some form or fashion.

When remote work ramped up in 2020, employers should have adapted to this new reality by distributing a remote work policy to employees. (If employers don’t already have a remote work policy but have employees working remotely, there’s no time like the present to implement such a policy.)

And for those whose existing policy hasn’t been revised in a while, now is also the time.

A good remote work policy contains: • • • • • • •

The criteria for assessing whether an employee can work remotely; How to handle home office expenses and other telecommuting expenses and logistics; How managers can expect to manage productivity and adherence to company policies; How to handle off-the-clock issues if the employee is nonexempt; Confidentiality and privacy policies, including how the employee is monitored; and A statement that remote work policies and practices may be revised at any time as the pandemic situation evolves.

A remote work agreement should describe the expectations your company has for employees who work remotely.

As many employers begin to welcome their employees back into the office, employers should revise this policy and distribute the revisions accordingly.

A remote work policy should also cover employee use of computer equipment, software and employer-provided telephones, 6

It’s wise to prohibit any access to company servers and confidential documents on employee-owned or public devices — instruct employees to be especially weary of security threats in public places like coffee shops or parks.

If your company doesn’t already have one, work with your IT department to establish a virtual private network (VPN). Think of a VPN as your company’s own private road through the internet — your data is shielded from prying eyes via layers of encryption.

In fact, VPN use has skyrocketed — with 52 percent of remote workers now using a VPN — due to the surge in remote workers. In your remote work policy, inform employees that they must use the company VPN when accessing company data and systems.

While many employers will steadily bring

their employees back into the office fulltime following the worst of the pandemic, others will undoubtedly see benefits from having employees work remotely or in a hybrid fashion, and want them to continue doing so. Those employers must implement or maintain a remote work policy that protects employer information, promotes productivity, encourages engagement and is easily adaptable to the ever-changing employment landscape.
