A WALK THROUGH THE CYPRESS • BY ELIZABETH MONKS HACK Color, Paint, Action! Gallery goers, you are in for a treat this month. Actually, you’re in for a rare, sensory experience. Featured artist Chris Jeszeck has installed “To Fluidity and Beyond!” in which we first peer into a precious world of intimate realism, and are then swept away into an abstract world of microscopic realities and vistas of the great beyond. She does this through a multitude of media and approaches, but predominantly through the technique of acrylic pouring, or “fluid art,” which she often ingeniously and playfully combines with her considerable mimetic skills. Ms. Jeszeck’s artful hand, her humor, joy and delight in the world is evident in every work on display. Fluid Art is a popular method of creating abstract art by combining paint with additives that do not dissolve into the pigment, so that when poured the paint separates into a variety of intriguing shapes and patterns, called “cells.” Pour artists experiment with a wide variety of chemical additives, as common as household glue, and as unusual as brake fluid. Artists enjoy the spontaneous effects and “happy accidents”created through each pour, but Jeszeck, who loves learning and is fearless in experimentation with every type of art, has taken this art form to new heights. The idea to embellish pours with realism resulted after she had created works that were pretty, but for her not interesting enough to stand alone. By adding a subject, she found she had an engaging, ready-made background. Since then, “controlled pours” and pre-planning have produced artworks such as “Splash,” in which a swimmer’s arms and legs emerge from a frothy wave. In “Abracadabra” a magician’s hands produce a playing card. Viewers of all ages and tastes will delight in the myriad of shapes – honeycomb, amoeba, floral – and the powerful, surprising linear action that the works produce. Ms. Jeszeck is on a mission to bring joy and a smile to every viewer. Each one is an imaginative, sensory, vivid experience. Bring children of all ages to see this! In color, concept and imagination, Cypress Kathy Badrak, Storytellers. Photo by Bill Morson. Gallery artists produce works of great variety and excellence. Turn the corner into the main gallery and you are further immersed in an astonishing wall of color by Vicki Andersen. Several of her intense works are on on display, of which “Jalama Beach Headquarters” is compositionally exceptional. Kathy Badrak’s “Storytellers” is a surprising mixed media work. Two exquisitely painted and etched gourds, fashioned into Native American figures are mounted on a canvas, upon which dreamlike images of tribal symbols emerge. Sylvia Kokatnur’s gouache “View of Kinsdale Harbor, Ireland,” with its precise rooftops and subtle paint color and application, recalls a village and lifestyle of long ago. CYPRESS GALLERY AUGUST FEATURED ARTIST CHRIS JESZECK JULY 30–AUGUST 25, 2O19

Chris Jeszeck, Flamenco

Chris Jeszeck, Reflections

The Lompoc Valley Art Association’s Cypress Gallery will be featuring "To Fluidity and Beyond!", an artist show by Chris Jeszeck. The show will be on exhibit from July 30 to August 25, 2019. Chris is practically a California native, having grown up in Southern California. Moving to Lompoc with her husband John and family in 1987 was one of the best decisions of her life. Inspiration for creating art is resplendent in this area of the central coast. “For over 40 years, I've spent as much time as possible learning and experimenting with various forms of art, including drawing and painting. I still can't call a particular style or vision my own, and that's the way I like it. I love being a student, stretching myself to try new techniques and approaches. While I am partial to detail and realism, I also have found myself mesmerized by abstraction. Not much makes me happier than sharpening a new set of colored pencils, squeezing out some luscious smelling oil paints or mixing a home-made medium with acrylics. Unless of course, I'm actually doing something with those supplies! I simply love to put color down on paper or canvas. My studio is truly my happy place, where all worries and concerns fly out the open window. If I have one goal with my art, it would be to make the viewer smile. Whether it be through a humorous addition to a piece of fluid art, a charming pet portrait or simply the use of bright color, I just want to bring a bit of joy to whoever takes the time to look at my work”.There will be a will be an artist’s reception on Sunday August 4 from 2:00 to 4:00p.m. Refreshments will be served. Please come by and check out the show. The Cypress Gallery is at 119 East Cypress Avenue, Lompoc, across from the Museum. The Lompoc Valley Arts Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, committed to expanding and supporting access and exposure to the arts in the Lompoc and Santa Ynez Valley. LOMPOC VALLEY MURAL SOCIETY Title: Domingos Blacksmith Shop Year: 1995

Location: 120 West Walnut Artists: Suzanne Cerny, Santa Barbara, CA

Blacksmith shop mural.

When this mural was painted, Domingos was one of the few remaining blacksmith shops in California. The shop functioned not only as a blacksmith shop but also as a social gathering place for longtime friends. One of the goals of The Lompoc Mural Society is, “to help preserve and communicate the valley’s historical roots so that the area’s children will have some sense of who they are, where they came from and a sense of community.” To help accomplish this, the Society commissions Murals to be painted with themes specific to the Lompoc Valley. These murals are displayed throughout Lompoc. In addition to commissioned murals painted by a single Master Artist, The Mural Society also sponsors “Mural in a Day”. This is a community artistic event. An historical theme is chosen by the Society and artists are invited to submit concept sketches. A “Master Artist “ is then chosen based on their submitted concept sketch. A colored, to scale, model of the mural is then completed. On the day of the event, it is duplicated full scale. Residents, visitors and other local artists are invited to help paint the mural under the direction of the Master Artist. The First Mural in a Day was completed in 1991. To date, over sixteen of these Murals have been completed.

Suzanne Cerny and mural start. SBNP 1995.

Domingos Blacksmith shop was the theme for the fourth Mural in a Day. This twelve foot by forty eight foot mural was painted during the Harvest Arts Festival held at Ryan Park in 1995. The Master Artist was Suzanne Cerny. There were fifteen additional participating artists. The Domingos Blacksmith Shop, located at 204 West Walnut Ave., was chosen because it represented a place that for generations was vitally important to the Lompoc Community. Blacksmiths are craftsman that have the ability to create and repair the metal tools and implements that were once necessary for the community to function. They created agricultural implements, cooking utensils, wagon parts and automobile parts. Domingos shop outside of building.

The first Blacksmith Shop in Lompoc was built in 1875. It was on the southeast corner of Ocean Ave and South I street. By 1920

there were at least five Blacksmith shops located in the “downtown” area of Lompoc between G Street and J Street near Ocean Ave. A Blacksmith Shop has been at the 204 West Walnut location since at least 1916. The first one burnt in June, 1920, but was rebuilt within a week. The Shop had a series of owners, and in 1937 was purchased by Manuel S. Domingos who had worked there since 1934. His son Tony took over the Shop in 1954 and worked there until it closed in December 1995. Examples of the ironwork created in the Blacksmith shop can been seen at many locations around Lompoc including the Fabing-McKay-Spanne House and The Lompoc Valley Historical Society. Information in this article was obtained from the Lompoc Valley Historical Society’s Blacksmith file, Blacksmith mural start mockup. the Lompoc Journal and Lompoc Review newspaper articles available online at California Digital Newspaper Collection, Center for Bibliographic Studies and Research, University of California, Riverside, http://cdnc.ucr.edu, and the Lompoc Mural Society’s web page at http://www. lompocmurals.com/

In Lompoc, October is so full of art that it was recently renamed, “Artober”. Artober is coming… and it’s going to be huge! Lompoc will be hosting many art themed events in Artober, but at the heart of it all is the annual Lompoc Chalks Festival, where artists of every age and walk of life will unleash their imaginations on The City of Arts & Flowers. Lompoc Chalks Festival is the brainchild of locals Don Fletcher and Barbara Satterfield, who were inspired by Santa Barbara’s iMadonnari Festival and Orcutt’s very popular Chalks event. “It’s part of the art movement,” says Fletcher, “It’s great for kids, a mind expander.” “People are excited to come to this event again this year,” shared Satterfield, the event’s organizer, “This event includes Mural Tours, Lompoc Theatre Tours, hay rides, Entertainment, Music, Beer & Wine, Food Trucks, artisan vendors and non-profits, even art lessons. Last year we estimated over 2000 people came to see the drawings and enjoy the food and music. This year we are expecting even more!” The event will help raise money for the Lompoc Theatre Project, the 92-yearold theatre at the heart of the city of downtown Lompoc. The goal is to revive it as a performing cultural arts and education center. As one board member puts it, “It will be the home of the arts in Lompoc. Movies, theatre, music concerts, dance shows – any live performance you can think of will be seen in our theatre.” Growing up in Lompoc, Fletcher and Satterfield have known each other since their student 4-H days. Satterfield says, “This is a real focus on the vibrant arts Community. Professional artists and people who want to try their hand at art will put their attempts in front of our community. This will continue to focus attention on art in the Lompoc Valley and raise money for the Theatre restoration.” Organizer Satterfield continues, “There is room for everyone. There is still time to sign up as a sponsor, vendor or artist. There is a separate children’s section where they can do chalk art. We want everyone to come to this awesome event.” She mentioned that the Lompoc City staff has been very supportive because they have been focused for many years on revitalizing the historic downtown area that includes buildings that date back to the 1880’s. Sponsorship can take on the form of many things; businesses or organizations can sponsor an artist, individuals can support and sponsor as a group – “The family of” or “in memory of.” There are many opportunities to get involved in a myriad of ways. The Lompoc Chalks Festival will be held on Friday, October 11, through Sunday, October 13, 2019. The freshly paved parking lots will be the canvas at the corner of Cypress and I Streets. To become a sponsor, volunteer, be an artist or vendor, or to receive more information, please contact us at: (805) 380-6777 • lompocchalks@gmail.com 740 North H Street, #238, Lompoc, CA 93436 or www.LompocTheatre.org.
