2017 SYV VISITORS GUIDE
www.visitsyv.com/santa-ynez-valley-destination-guide/
Message from 3rd District Arts Commissioner Stacey Otte-Demangate There are some exciting new opportunities for artists in Santa Barbara. The Santa Barbara County Office of Arts and Culture invites artists to submit proposals for a new exhibition of sculpture on State Street in Downtown Santa Barbara. The sculptures will be mounted on eight designated installation “pads” located on the State Street Corridor and anchored to the sidewalk below. The upcoming exhibition will feature sculpture by local artists from March – May 2018. ELIGIBILITY: This project is open to all professional artists and/or collaborative artist teams at least 18 years of age, working or residing in Santa Barbara County. Work needs to be appropriate for an outdoor location and able to accommodate pedestrian foot traffic. Artists do not need to create new sculpture for this project and can choose to submit or loan existing work for the exhibition. Artists may submit multiple sculptures for consideration and multiple sculptures may be selected from the same artist. BUDGET: The selected artists will receive an honorarium of $750 per sculpture/ per pad for the term of the art loan. The Office of Arts and Culture will manage the transportation, maintenance, and installation of each work and underwrite the cost of these items with generous support from Santa Barbara Beautiful. This collaboration is supported by the City of Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Community Arts Workshop, Santa Barbara Beautiful, and the Downtown Organization: a map of the sculpture pad locations is available at www.sbac.ca.gov/state-of-the-art-gallery. Join staff from the Office of Arts and Culture on Wednesday, Dec. 13 from 5-6 p.m. at the Community Arts Workshop in Santa Barbara to learn more about the Call for Artists. The Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative, which is a partner in the State St. exhibition, will also be onsite presenting about their new Residency Program. Artfully yours, Stacey Otte-Demangate Arts Commissioner, District 3

ART WITHOUT BORDERS EXHIBIT Michelle Castle: Botanicals
Through January 4, 2018 The Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Cafe 2870 Grand Ave, Los Olivos
An exhibit of beautiful botanical artwork by local artist Michelle Castle will be on view at the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café, from October 30 through January 4. The artist’s botanical watercolor illustrations combine her fascination and appreciation for vintage etchings and stylized text with fine, hand-crafted papers. Drawings from the 1600-1700’s are hand-painted with watercolor into multi-dimensional illustrations. Some are then further manipulated digitally, then printed on fine 100% cotton rag paper. Michelle has been an active participant in local community art, and is also the proud owner of Honey Paper, a bridal lounge and stationery design studio. This new “Botanicals” show is a great opportunity for visitors to see an impressive body of work.
This exhibit is one of a continuing series of shows made possible by the commitment of the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café to showcase local art and artists. Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association, a nonprofit arts organization with over thirty years of history in the area, coordinates and manages the “art without borders” installation in cooperation with the Café. A portion of art sales benefits the organization, and these collaborative efforts - a way to keep art alive and accessible in the Santa Ynez Valley. ART WITHOUT BORDERS EXHIBIT
Rebecca Gomez and Allen Koehn: Outside the Box
Allen Koehn, Barking up th Right Tree Digital photo, archival mixed media print, 16x20
Rebecca Gomez, Cast Shadows Series III Mixed media, 24x30
Through January 15, 2018 Epiphany Wine Cellars
2974 Grand Ave, Los Olivos A diverse show of art pieces by local artists Rebecca Gomez and Allen Koehn, the show title, “Outside the Box”, refers to the artists’ use of art media in unusual and perhaps unexpected ways, resulting in works that engage the viewer on several levels. The photographic art by Koehn is based on digital photographs which have been printed on archival art rag paper, affixed to a stretched canvas base. The photo pigments have been fixed into the paper using an unusual technique utilizing a specialized UV protective varnish in many coats that is absorbed into the paper. Then the works are coated with an acrylic matte medium, resulting in photographic work that is as resilient as a finished painting. This allows it to be framed without matte or glass, in this case in floater frames, which allows one to take it in much like they would experience artwork in other mediums. These “archival mixed media prints” can hang without limitations sometimes imposed on photographic work, in that they are UV protected and will not fade in strong light and have a tough surface not subject to damage without protection by glass. As for the mixed media work by Gomez, the artist has noted: “There are many layers in my work, and often some transparency. While my work may appear to be disparate in style or execution, it is actually all part of an exploration of subjects or objects that can never truly be captured in a fixed way. Whether representational or abstract, the pieces are about asking questions, attempting to see beyond the surface, looking for openings, connections. They celebrate not what we know and the limits of knowing, but rather the beauty of mystery and the impossibility of fixed knowledge about the manifest world.” The work in the show includes some pieces from the artist’s “Shadow Series”, which incorporates black and white digital photography as one of several layers in the finished artwork – again, an unusual approach. Other works involve a mixed range of painting and drawing media. This exhibit introduces Epiphany Cellars as a venue supporting the efforts of SYV Arts. Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association, a nonprofit arts organization with over thirty years of history in the area, coordinates and manages the “art without borders” installations. A portion of art sales benefits the organization, and these collaborative efforts - a way to keep art alive and accessible in the Santa Ynez Valley. THE CYPRESS GALLERY
119 E. Cypress Ave, Lompoc • Open Tue–Sun, 12-4PM & 12–5PM Daylight Savings www.lompocvalleyartassociation.com "A Walk Through the Cypress" December 2017 By Terry Taylor December is a time for reflection. It is the season to give, believe, sparkle, be joyful, party, be merry and bright, be with your loved ones, indulge in holiday treats, miss those who are far away, create memories for years to come, hug your loved ones a little tighter, reflect on the year that is behind and look towards a new year of opportunities and adventures. One of the things liked best by people who visit the gallery is the monthly "People's Choice Award." A family came in last month who saw that their choice for best in October had won and they were thrilled. They made an extra effort to view the newest displays and vote for their new favorites. I hope you do the same when you visit. November's winner is "Bear Wall" a colored pencil drawing by Mary Whittemore. Congratulations, Mary; nice job. The artists of Cypress Gallery have decked the halls this month with amazing artworks. We're seeing an upsurge of abstract paintings and the entire front room is filled the works of several abstract artists, including Neil Andersson, Kathy Badrak, Trish Campbell, Mikel Naccarato and Tonya Romano Schultz. I especially like Neil Andersson's "Montagne St. Genevieve" (oil) and Mikel Naccarato's "Tide Pools" (acrylic). Sylvia Kokatnur, Carousel
One of my favorite pieces this month is a large watercolor by Sylvia Kokatnur entitled "Carousel." Rich, dark tones and interesting detail make the painting special. There is a nice small watercolor by Claudette Carlton called "The Rock," and colorful collection by Vicki Andersen showcasing the central coast. One of her paintings, "Silver Twilight, Lompoc," is done in a striking palette of intense blues, greys and white.
In addition to being a gallery full of fine art, Cypress Gallery is an amazing gift shop. You'll find a multitude of hand-crafted items priced affordably: small original paintings and prints featuring La Purisima Mission, Lompoc scenes, animals and florals, as well as jewelry, glass pieces, pottery, gourds, textile items and handcrafted Lompoc souvenirs. In addition, there is an extensive selection of greeting cards for all occasions. Are you an artist, photographer, artisan craftsperson or just interested in supporting the arts? Consider membership in the Lompoc Valley Art Association. Annual membership is just $25 ($30 for a couple) and applications are available at the gallery or at lompocart. com. We hope you join us! Cypress Gallery is operated by the members of the Lompoc Valley Art Association and is located at 119 East Cypress Avenue, Lompoc. Hours: Tuesday through Sunday 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. 805-737-1129, lompocart.com. Neil Andersson, Montagne St. Genevieve
SPECIAL NOTE: Cypress Gallery will be closed for remodeling beginning Wednesday, December 27, 2017 and will be closed (tentatively) through Monday, January 29, 2018. If the project is completed sooner, we will open earlier, date to be determined. Please plan to join us then to see the new look.

The Student & The Teacher Through February 5, 2018 Works by modernist Western painter Theodore Waddell are paired with those of his former teacher Isabelle Johnson in a new exhibit called “The Student & The Teacher” at the Wildling Museum of Art & Nature in Solvang. The paintings share many of the same subjects – Montana landscapes, livestock on the range, trees and plant life – and the teacher’s influence is evident. But the works also offer a view of how the student has shaped his own vision in the intervening years. Isabelle Johnson, Feeding Cattle, Winter
