Introducing Two New Artists to Gallery Los Olivos Tom de Walt

Pat McGinnis

A Santa Barbara oil painter, creates oil landscapes that are filled with light of various moods and designed with an interplay of interesting shapes, creating a very clean contemporary look. If you’re a landscape lover, Tom’s paintings give you a new choice of style to enjoy.

A sculptor from Goleta whose work is about abstracted form, with flowing movement and an animated feel. His pieces carved from natural stone blend an innovative sensibility with classic lines. In addition to several pieces he’s displaying in his individual pedestal area, he also has a piece in our “H20” show in the front room during January that is hard to miss because it is painted red.

The C Gallery

466 Bell St, Los Alamos

Exhibit: Lines of Poem

Januray 21–March 15, 2017 For more information about the "Lines of a Poem" exhibit or The C Gallery connie@thecgallery • 805-344-3807 • www.thecgallery.com

Opening Artist Reception: Sat. Jan. 21 • 4–7PM - Open to the Public The C Gallery in Los Alamos is exhibiting the art of its Artistic Director, Connie Rohde, January 21 through March 15. The show is entitled “Lines of a Poem,” and emphasizes non-verbal language expressed through spontaneous marks. Rohde will be sharing the exhibit with sculptor, Albert McCurdy. There will be an opening reception for the artists on Saturday, January 21 from 4 pm – 7 pm with celebratory hors d’oeuvres from all the food merchants in Los Alamos. The “Lines of a Poem” exhibit had its genesis from an art exploration question by Rohde, “If I change the size and shape of the surface on which I work, will the spontaneous, intuitive marks change?” The answer was a resounding “Yes” with long flowing, calligraphic marks that resemble calligraphy. Some pieces’ marks resonate with Aborigine art, highlighting dots, dashes and a kind of mapping. In two pieces there are triptychs which tell a distilled story, a poem or sorts, hence the title of the show, “Lines of a Poem.” The show is fleshed out with personal intuitive exploration and meditations.

Connie Rohde, Poetess

McCurdy, a constant art companion of Rohde and The C Gallery, is designing sculptural works to accompany the thrust of the theme. Some of his works include include Bertoia-esque sound sculptures, which seem to take the viewer to the same emotional and intellectual place as Rohde’s visuals. The centerpiece, “Point of Nothingness,” inspired by the writings of Thomas Merton, journeys to “Here,” the material world, and to “There,” the “Other Places.” It is accompanied by McCurdy’s minimal tinted glass monolith, which leads the way to quiet thought and stillness, to nothingness. Having spent the greater part of her career as a teacher, Rohde has been showing more widely of late. Last summer she was part of the “Views From the North” show in Santa Barbara, curated by John Hood. This show was followed by an exhibit at Allan Hancock College in the Foxworthy Gallery in Santa Maria. Rohde has enjoyed local shows at Bell Street Farm, Full of Life Flatbread, and at The C Gallery. This is the third showing of Rohde’s work during The C Gallery’s nine year presence in Los Alamos. The C Gallery has produced over sixty-five exhibits in its nine year run, promoting artists from San Francisco to San Diego. McCurdy shows widely in Santa Barbara, has won numerous awards for his work in wood and metals, and currently exhibits in two other galleries in California besides The C Gallery. Recently he won First Place for abstract sculpture from Santa Barbara's Sculpture Guild. The judge loved it for “its tension and precision and an outstanding organic component.” McCurdy is a self-taught artist, and an unending wellspring of creative vision. Rohde and McCurdy exhibit as art companions, often collaborating in their creative planning.

Art Without Borders Exhibit: Sharon Foster: Coastal Beauty Januray 5, through March 2, 2017

Local artist Sharon Foster is on view at the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & CafÊ. The work is an engaging viewing experience, and the pieces are available for purchase by art loving collectors who may wish to acquire an inspiring work of art. Sharon Foster is a photographic artist and long time resident of Santa Maria. She captures stunning photographs as she wanders through the hills and valleys of the Central Coast, seeking just the right play of light and shadow for her images. Although nature landscapes and architecture are her current interests, Sharon is always looking through her lens for artistic inspiration. Because the artist has developed her gift in the art form of digital photography over the years, she is able to change her masterful photographs into emotionally stirring works of art. Each piece is digitally enhanced so the majesty of God’s creation, that is so alive in nature, is reflected in a fresh expression of joy and wonder.
