ART IN UNEXPECTED PLACES
Location: St. Mark's-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, Los Olivos The upper windows in the Chapel were originally in the old church in Solvang and made by Judson Studios in Los Angeles. Designer Jean Myers extended the net of the center window in the second row of upper windows into the four large windows below. In the upper window Jesus calls Peter to follow him and to fish for people. The round nave window (see above), the lion and lamb, is taken from Isaiah, Chapter 11. Also, the lion is the symbol of St. Mark and the lamb is the symbol of Santa Ynez (St. Ines or Agnes). Located at 2901 Nojoqui Ave, Los Olivos, St. Mark's-in-the-Valley offers an outdoor courtyard and labyrinth open 24/7. The Chapel is open during the day. 3

New Media Exploration
USEFULNESS OF LOW COST VIDEO ADVERTISING by Mitra Cline - Foreverbird Studios
ANALYZING COMMERCIALS USING FIVERR When thinking about venturing into video advertising, a number of questions pop up. What does it cost? How difficult is it to produce? What is the quality? How do you decide what will be most effective for the purpose you are creating it? Looking for budget-minded sites, I choose to experiment with Fiverr.com. For $5 ($5.50 when you count the fee involved), I thought I could play a bit without much risk, especially since I was concerned about the quality for such a low cost. After checking out their site, ultimately I went on a shopping spree ordering several video commercials from templates they offer. The basic deal is that you, the customer, provide a graphic and/or basic text to be added into one of their commercial templates. The trick is to select a template commercial that matches your message - what are you trying to convey? In my case, I was in the process of refining my brand. So, using multiple commercials as a sounding board, I was able to see how the brand would look in a video commercial, and able to understand my brands impact through analyzing response rates. Sorting through the selection of videos on fiverr.com, I looked for images that conveyed a feeling of fantasy and imagination. I was immediately attracted to the video of a man diving and writing a message under water. After receiving the first video of the man underwater, I was hooked and went back to order more video commercials. All in all I ordered 6 for a total price of around $50. Not a bad price for a video campaign experiment. I did pay for some extra features - such as high resolution and sound. (Fiverr.com offers the option to add on services to the basic $5 gig.) If you would like to see 5 of the video commercials I created, click on each image below. Which do you think best captured the feeling of "fantasy and imagination" that I was attempting to capture for my brand?

AUGUST 17 SENSE & SENSIBILITY
Special Time: 6:45 -10:00 PM Solvang Festival Theater $20.25 / per person - includes pre-play reception 13 tickets remaining Inquire: info@santaynezvalleyarts.org Santa Ynez Valley Arts has arranged for a special group rate and a pre-show reception for PCPA's "Sense & Sensibility" play at the Solvang Festival Theater. The reception, catered by Central Coast Specialty Foods, will begin at 6:45pm, followed by the play at 8:00pm. Adapted for the stage by Joseph Hanreddy and J.R. Sullivan. This beloved story, set in late-1700s England, follows the Dashwoods and the period after they move to the family cottage of the Middletons. Daughters Elinor Dashwood and Marianne Dashwood are both looking for love, but the elder Elinor pursues romance through rationality and friendship, while young Marianne lets her passionate heart take the lead. With just the right mix of humor, romance, and happy endings, the classic novel comes to life on stage in this new adaptation of Jane Austen’s popular work. While appropriate for all ages, this new adaptation of the Jane Austen classic is best enjoyed by children 12 years and older.

Luongo’s pieces embody the result of a true artist engaged in a passionate processes of creation. Born to Italian parents, Aldo was raised in Argentina. While growing up he was exposed to various forms of the arts including painting and playing the piano. All the while his true love as a young man was playing soccer. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Aldo played professional soccer in New York for the Cosmos. Aldo Luongo’s vibrant impressionistic style shows early influence by such masters as Monet, Van Gogh, and ToulouseLautrec. Flatteringly reviewed as a “Post-Impressionist” by The New York Times, Luongo appreciated the compliment, as many of his favorite painters were Impressionists. Aldo Luongo, A Great Pinot

Revelations: Culture and the Humane Landscape of the Central Coast Through August 14, 2016
This ground-breaking and extraordinary exhibit is an invitation to experience a broadly expanded way of perceiving art. The easily accessed and admirably executed work is a series of engaging portraits of local individuals, each of whom represents a part of a diverse local population. Artist Holli Harmon and her inspiring team of support artists’ work illuminates the cultures that give our California region color, purpose, and meaning. Through companion videos, each portrait subject shares their personal story and introduces the culture they represent.
Holli Harmon, Dr. Shuji Nakamura
In addition to the portraits, a series of monoprints explore how these cultures, landscapes, and individuals developed over time. The exhibition exceeds the usual limits of exploring subject matter, embracing and utilizing artistic approaches that include ancient practices, traditional work, and modern technology. Viewers will leave with an expanded and heightened sense of connection and community understanding.
Explanatory graphic works as well as a podcast guide the viewers through the multi-sensory exhibition. A catalog offers an overall view of how the various approaches and ways of expression are united in this show. Exhibition programming builds upon the cultures and individuals represented with a series of themed “Culture Club” events featuring local flavors, stories, dialogue, music and more. Please check back at www.elverhoj.org for information.
