Spotlight! July: 2nd Saturday Featured Artist Irena Malkmus
On the 2nd Saturday of each month, from 12 noon to 5pm, local Artists both show and sell their unique art work. Original paintings, jewelry, wood-work, pottery, photography, and more will be for sale and on display. All the artists accepted for “2nd Saturday Artisans” have a unique point of view and are skilled at their craft. The show is located within the iconic Grange Hall, next to the park, in the center of Los Olivos. Come by and meet our artists! If you are an artist and want to participate – contact Kathy Badrak at Kbadrak@comcast.net for the application. The Second Saturday Featured Artist for July 14, 2018 is Irina Malkmus. Irina will not only be displaying her art but will also create quick, on the spot, portraits. “I like people, and I like faces. For quick portraits I use a kind of blind contour drawing technique. I carefully look at the face, and make a face map, then I add some color.” Irina loves to express her artistic ideas in several different mediums including: oil, acrylics, pastels, watercolor, mixed-media, and found objects. She describes her work as a “visual journalism.” “I observe people and nature, in turn, the resulting feelings and thoughts are interpreted by my imagination. Different ideas come to me at any time of the day or night. Some are immediately forgotten and some live on. When I work in my studio the world around me ceases to exist. I am immersed in a special condition similar to meditation.”
I have over 20 sketchbooks where I collect and play ideas. Some complex and beautiful paintings are born from a single line on a page.

I enjoy experimenting by combining various elements, styles and mediums. I feel joy when I am able to unify diverse pieces into a harmonious whole.”
Pebble art is one of Irina’s engaging creations. During a surfing trip to Costa Rica, with her husband, she discovered a beach covered with hard flat polished pebbles, that were in different shapes. She collected many of them. Now, according to Irina “Using my imagination, I make funny, cute illustrations with them.”

THE CYPRESS GALLERY
119 E. Cypress Ave, Lompoc • Open Tue–Sun, 12-4PM www.lompocvalleyartassociation.com
"A Walk Through the Cypress" July 2018 • By Terry Taylor It's July (already!) and families are excited today because Lompoc's 4th of July fireworks spectacular is tonight. Americans' love for fireworks is bested only by our love of freedom, defended by the men and women serving in the armed forces and also by politically active people who participate in the democratic process. And this democratic process is what makes America great, as it always has been. Happy Birthday, America! June's People's Choice Award was given to Lee Hill for his acrylic painting "Passage." Congratulations, Lee. When you visit the gallery (and I hope you come Louie Regalado, Pismo Pier at least once a month to see the changing displays) be sure to pick out a favorite piece and vote for it; our artists feel privileged to receive the monthly award and love the ability to display the art another month with no entry fee. July's featured artist is Louie Regalado who has given his show the name "A Splash of California." Louie uses acrylics and spray paint to create his colorful, contemporary landscapes and animal paintings. My favorite piece in this show is a sunset view from "Pismo Pier." I also like "Humpbacks," a bright ocean piece with sprayed background and paint-splattered foreground. Louie says he is very much influenced by other artists, but I also see an artist whose work is anything but ordinary. Please join the artist and LVAA members at a reception on Thursday, July 12th to enjoy the art throughout the gallery and have some refreshments. In the main gallery, there are lots of paintings and photographs to view and a nice collection of fused glass by Joellen Chrones. Her table piece "Bird of Paradise" will be the center of attention in any setting. We have a selection of watercolor paintings by Rosalea Greenwood Tom Heslop, Chris Jeszeck and others. I'm drawn, especially, to Diane Reuter's "Another Beginning" depicting a woman gardening--simple yet powerful.
Joellen Chrones, Bird of Paradise
Oil painters Carol Oliveira and Neil Andersen have submitted two beauties "Spring" by Carol and "Beattie Park" by Neil. There are powerful seascapes in acrylic done by Mikel Naccarato, "Showers," and a variety of ocean scenes by Angie Hamlin.

Lompoc Valley Arts Association Roundtable Discussion Series LVAA is starting a Roundtable Series. Our goal is to present and discuss those topics that engage and educate all of us as artists. We plan to hold these once a month at the Cypress Gallery. These will be informal discussions covering a different topic at each meeting. We will try to have at least one “expert to help lead and guide the discussions. Our first Roundtable will be held on July 23rd, from 2pm to 4pm at the Cypress Gallery. We will be discussing Copyrights for Artists. We will cover: How to Protect Your Art, Copyright Infringement, How Not to Breach Copyright Laws (if it is on the Internet, it is not public property) and How to Obtain a Copyright.

We’re delighted welcome an exceptional equine artist into our gallery. Alice Joy Murphy uses colored pencils of exceptional quality to create portraits of horses that capture a classic representation of the horse but with texture and visual energy. With deft blending of gorgeous colors and detail, her paintings will seize your attention whether you're a horse lover or are drawn simply to art that makes you want to reach out and touch it. Alice has a degree in Equine Business management and lives just down the road in Solvang in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley ranch country, so she knows her subject very well. Obviously, here is an artist who has a passion for horses! One of her current projects is portraits of horses that figure into the history of the Valley, so keep an eye on her wall for exciting new work.

Welcome to Summer Intern Hannah Gechter We welcome Hannah Gechter, our summer intern, to the Wildling. Thanks to generous sponsoring by the Rotary Club, she is able to work here and learn about keeping an art museum running. So far, she has organized the kitchen area, helped set up the Solvang Friendship House’s show, and posted to our social media platforms. She is working on mastering social media and becoming proficient at the front desk. She will be a senior at SYV High this fall, and she plans to enter into the arts when she graduates. Her favorite mediums are charcoal, acrylic, and oil pastel. The subjects of her paintings are mostly people, and she also loves to make art inspired by nature. “I want to thank Stacey Otte-Demangate and Callie Martin in particular for providing this amazing opportunity to me. Wildling to Host Random Weave Basket Class Saturday, July 28 • 10am – 4pm As a true blend of art and nature, the Wildling Museum is pleased to offer a random weave basket workshop with Kathy Badrak and Karen Osland on Saturday, July 28, 2018 from 10am to 4pm. In this class participants will learn the basketry technique of random weave, using rattan reed and vines. This weave allows the weaver to create a freeform basket, sculpture, or a more structured form such as a bowl, tray or dish. Students will have an opportunity to incorporate local botanicals, found in yards and gardens, into their baskets. The finished baskets will be approximately five to ten inches in diameter. This class is suitable for any level of experience with basketry techniques and/ or basketry materials. The class includes all materials and written directions. To provide adequate instruction time for each participant, the number of workshop participants is limited to fourteen. Length of the workshop is six hours which includes a half hour lunch break. Tuition is $45, plus an additional $10 to be paid on the day of the class to the instructors for materials. To register, visit http://www.wildlingmuseum.org/random-weave-basket-classjuly-28th/, stop in the Wildling, or call 805-686-8315.
Opening Reception: Nature Imagined Saturday, July 21, 2018 • 3-5pm You are invited to Nature Imagined, a special exhibition that celebrates nature through the vivid imaginations of Cheryl Medow, Ellen Jewett, and Hilary Brace. Inspired by nature, these artists use diverse materials and methods to create environments that engage the imagination. The viewer is invited to look into the details of their artwork and explore the unique weaving of image, texture, and pattern that resembles nature and yet is unlike anything in the natural world. Two of the artists, Cheryl Medow and Hilary Brace, will be at the reception. The exhibit will be on display from July 20th, 2018 to January 21st, 2019. About the Artists Santa Barbara based photographer Cheryl Medow uses composite digital photography to create intriguing images of birds. They make the viewer take a second and third look to digest the full scene. Some are humorous, others are majestic, and all are fascinating. Sculptor Ellen Jewett lives in British Columbia. She will be loaning eight pieces to Nature Imagined. Each piece is its own habitat of plant, animal, and insect species. Hilary Brace of Santa Barbara uses charcoal, graphite, and digital mediums to create monochrome, dramatic, and imagined landscapes. Hilary has recently started to translate her brooding landscapes into large tapestries that are painstakingly woven by a specialty textile plant in the Netherlands.
