Diane Reuter, Cow, 99% paper with some black acrylic paint. After years of taking watercolor, Diane has recently found collage. She says, "The marvelous qualities of paper and paint allowed me to mix different media in exciting new ways. Experimenting with any object I could find to stamp, print, cut, paint, and glue gave me the freedom to recover and cover mistakes." Diane has been a member since 2002. ART IN UNEXPECTED PLACES
Location: “Sunny Fields Park Alamo Pintado Rd, Solvang CA
Sunny Fields Park was built in 2005 and was the Rotary Club Centennial project for the three Rotary clubs in the Santa Ynez Valley. Planning for Rotary International Centennial began a couple years earlier when Rotary International asked for every club to create a project for their community. Sylvia Remmenga was president of Los Olivos Rotary for 2003/04 year, with Steve Berg the following year, and we represented the Los Olivos club. They met with the Santa Ynez and Solvang Rotary clubs and formed a committee to select a Centennial project for the community. Sunny Fields was the chosen project in collaboration with the City of Solvang and their Recreation Director Kristen Bundgen. A playground developer from Ithaca, New York, was chosen to help with the design and build-out of the park. Fundraising began and the park was built in three days by Rotarians and the Santa Ynez Community. The committee was looking for an entry landmark to commemorate this project. A clock tower was suggested. Michelle Griffoul was a supporter of the Los Olivos club. Sylvia met with Michelle at her ceramic studio, and she was enthusiastic about the project. A committee go-ahead got the project rolling. The handmade tiles on the clock tower were made by Michelle's Studio, but the pathway tiles were hand designed and made by children and adults in the community. This consisted of many work days at the Studio. Michelle sold her Buellton Studio and now lives in Lahaina, Hawaii where she has purchased land and is building a Ceramic Studio and home on her property. Michelle can be contacted at ellietile@gmail.com. 3

SOCIAL MEDIA TIPS FOR CONTENT CREATORS by Mitra Cline - Foreverbird Studios
ORIGINAL CONTENT - COPYRIGHT AND FAIR USE Artists, for the most part, have an easy time coming up with original content to share. Most artists are concerned with copyrights and watermarks. My general rule is to only upload low resolution, or small size, images. You might also consider only showing detail images or works in progress photos. It's a good idea to post clearly, someplace on your website or social media "about" section, how people can use your images. Also, be aware that some use is fair game to other artists once it's out there in the public eye. TIP: Get your license from Creative Commons. They have tools that tell people how you want them to use your images or NOT use your images. TIP: If you don't have photoshop or are unsure about image resizing, here is a website that will crop your image to fit the avatar and banner spaces on most social media profile pages. WORD OF MOUTH - CREDIBILITY IN SOCIAL MEDIA Word of mouth online can go viral and access people world wide. Having a recommendation from a friend is more meaningful than an anonymous stranger. One key concept for social media is about the users identity. There are 3 basic levels and their value ranges from less credible to most credible. No Name: Anonymous - We don't know who said it, so it's not very credible. Username: Semi Anonymous - Example: "Big Box"- only people who know them recognize their username. Less credible because actual identity is hidden. Actual Name: Real People - We know who these people are. We know of them personally or through recommendations from other people we know. TIP: There are programs out there to help you get to know the people in social media and discover more about their online reputation. Some are free (social mention), but the better ones are paid (nimble). PLANNING IS A GOOD IDEA Posting your own content on social media sites is like publishing your own newspaper. People expect new information on some type of regular basis. Not everything you post has to be about you, in fact it's a good idea to have a wide range of different types of posts. It saves time and you can make your posts more interesting if you plan them in advance. Example Schedule for Social Media • Monday - Tweet a selfie photo "find me on facebook" with a link to your facebook page • Tuesday - Add pins on Pinterest board from new research on an artist you like • Wednesday - Post a video on Facebook from a recent lecture • Thursday - Post on LinkedIn about an upcoming art show you will be attending - event link • Friday - Post a link to your newsletter and "teaser" text with photo about a new art project TIP: Services, like Hoot-suite, connect social media accounts and allow you to plan out your social posts on a calendar - all in one place. REPORTING IS YOUR FRIEND Many social media sites, especially the business accounts, offer reporting on the content. It's a great idea to monitor and analyze this info. It helps you to see what content is most popular, which can help you when planning new content.

Celebrating the National Parks of California JUNE 17 - OCTOBER 3, 2016
FREE Opening Reception: June 17 • 5:30 - 7:30 pm RSVP to the event The Wildling Museum is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service with a juried exhibition showcasing the nine California National Parks: Yosemite National Park, Channel Islands National Park, Death Valley National Park, Joshua Tree National Park, Lassen Volcanic National Park, Pinnacles National Park, Redwood National Park, Sequoia National Park, and Kings Canyon National Park. Fittingly, the Golden State has more National Parks than any other state in our union, and it is with great pride that we offer this inspiring exhibition of artworks. The goal of this exhibit is to celebrate and discuss wilderness, nature and preservation of the parks. It is also to provide an opportunity for artists to display their work, and for the public to view and purchase the excellent plein air and studio pieces being produced by these fine artists. Celebrating the National Parks of California will feature 51 artworks that were juried in from a pool of 165 submitted by artists all over the country who responded to the Wildling’s call for entries. A wide range of mediums are represented from large scale oil painting, photography, block printing, and more. We are very grateful to Judy Larson, R. Anthony Askew Professor of Art History and Director of Westmont Museum of Art, landscape artist Thomas Paquette, and third-generation landscape photographer Marc Muench for their time and efforts in judging the wonderful diversity of entries. The opening reception will be held on June 17, 2016 from 5:30 to 7:30pm and will feature an award ceremony for the top three works. National Park representatives will be in attendance to honor their Centennial and this exhibition. The Wildling Museum, where art and nature meet, offers visitors a unique perspective on the importance of preserving our natural heritage. Through the eyes of artists, education and field experiences, guests can renew their relationship with the wilderness and understand its fragile nature - hopefully leaving more committed toward ensuring those spaces remain for future generations. For more information, to volunteer and/or join as a member to support this important local arts and nature institution please visit www.wildlingmuseum.org. 12
Solstice Sundowner Benefit Party Saturday, June 18 • $125 per person
The Elverhøj Museum of History & Art will celebrate the year’s longest day with Solstice Sundowner, a benefit party with fun, fine food and local wines, entertainment—and the solstice bonfire. Guests will congregate at 5 p.m. under a canopy of oaks on the greens alongside the picturesque lake at a private vineyard location in the hills outside Solvang. The bucolic setting lies off Ballard Canyon Road within the boundaries of the nearly 9,000 acres that Solvang’s founders bought in 1910 for their new Danish colony. Superb wines will be flowing along with a Sundowner cocktail special. Tray-passed appetizers, and a gourmet dinner will be followed by a decadent dessert. A handful of reservations, $125 per person, remain for this sell-out annual event. Following Danish tradition, a Solstice "Sankt Hans Aften" (St. John’s Eve) bonfire will be lit at lake’s edge as the sun sinks behind the hills and the full moon rises over the lake. The live and silent auctions feature exclusive one-of-a-kind experiences and a wide range of specialty items ready to go home with the highest bidder. Your attendance at an unforgettable evening helps support Elverhøj Museum, a 501(c)3 public benefit corporation, and its mission to collect, preserve and exhibit the history and Danish culture of Solvang and to promote the arts.
Revelations: Culture and the Human Landscape of the Central Coast
Holli Harmon, Reynolds Yater
This ground-breaking and extraordinary exhibit is an invitation to experience a broadly expanded way of perceiving art. The easily accessed and admirably executed work is a series of engaging portraits of local individuals, each of whom represents a part of a diverse local population. Artist Holli Harmon and her inspiring team of support artists’ work illuminates the cultures that give our California region color, purpose, and meaning.
Each of the cultural portraits on display is an opening to how the individual person carries their culture forward and connects to the area’s community, as well as to the past and to the future. Through companion videos, each portrait subject shares their personal story and introduces the culture they represent.
Holli Harmon, Dr. Shuji Nakamura
In addition to the portraits, a series of monoprints explore how these cultures, landscapes, and individuals developed over time. The exhibition exceeds the usual limits of exploring subject matter, embracing and utilizing artistic approaches that include ancient practices, traditional work, and modern technology. Viewers will leave with an expanded and heightened sense of connection and community understanding. Explanatory graphic works as well as a podcast guide the viewers through the multi-sensory exhibition. A catalog offers an overall view of how the various approaches and ways of expression are united in this show. Exhibition programming builds upon the cultures and individuals represented with a series of themed “Culture Club” events featuring local flavors, stories, dialogue, music and more. Please check back at www.elverhoj.org for information.

Gallery Hours: Daily • 10am - 5pm Winter Hours Dec/Jan • 10am - 4pm June 1 through 30, 2016 Gallery Los Olivos wildlife artists, Claudia Chapman and Ivanie Finsvik, have long been captured by the beauty of animals, their antics, and their surroundings. There is a free opening reception on Saturday, June 4, from 11a.m. until 4 p.m. Claudia and Ivanie look forward to sharing their passion for the natural world at that time. The show will include oil paintings of animals from both land and sea. It is her aim to portray a wide range of natural relationships and portraits. Dedicated to conservation and preservation, Claudia hopes to raise viewers’ interest in this area with her art. In addition, recently she has been researching endangered animals and has started to include these in her works. Her Malayan Tiger, on view at the exhibit, is an example. Pastel artist, Ivanie Finsvik comes from a ranching background. Before she moved to Santa Barbara a few years ago, she lived on a cattle/sheep ranch homesteaded by her Norwegian grandparents in the Crazy Mountains north of Big Timber, Montana. Through her studio windows there, she often watched elk jumping the barbed-wire fence. Bears, mountain lions, moose, wild turkeys and an occasional passing badger or skunk “modeled” for her. Yellowstone Park, another rich source of subjects for her work, was just an hour and a half away. A lifelong “outdoors” person, she has shared campsites with mountain goats, moose and wild horses. Near Santa Barbara she has found opportunities to attend sheepdog trials. You may also find her sketching the wonderful characters at Santa Barbara Zoo. Gallery Los Olivos was founded in 1992 and is owned by an incorporated group of over forty (40) member artists from Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties. The gallery is located at 2920 Grand Avenue in Los Olivos, CA, telephone (805) 688-7571. Artist members operate the gallery which is open daily 10:00 to 5:00 (10:00 to 4:00 in December and January). Information on the gallery and current exhibitions can be found at www.GalleryLosOlivos.com. Ivanie Finsvik, Catch of the Day

Sullivan This beloved story, set in late-1700s England, follows the Dashwoods and the period after they move to the family cottage of the Middletons. Daughters Elinor Dashwood and Marianne Dashwood are both looking for love, but the elder Elinor pursues romance through rationality and friendship, while young Marianne lets her passionate heart take the lead. With just the right mix of humor, romance, and happy endings, the classic novel comes to life on stage in this new adaptation of Jane Austen’s popular work. The Quick Draw invites you into a collection of “virtual studios” to glimpse the unique way each artist sets up their space and moves through the process of creating a finished piece. The artwork produced at the Quick Draw is an opportunity for you to own original work that is a distillation of true talent! In addition, your chosen piece carries the intimate experience of watching it created right in front of you. A provenance that can only add value through the years. As the major fundraiser for the SYV Arts non-profit, we are so grateful to the featured artists who come to participate in the Quick Draw - sharing their talent and donating half their proceeds in support of our mission. Each artist is an expert in their medium, displaying a level of artistry and skill that is exciting to watch! The ability to complete an amazing, original art piece in one hour is testament to the years of study, work, and training they have each put in to become masters of their craft.
Vicki Andersen • vickiandersen.com
Kevin Gleason • kevingleasonart.com
A central Coast artist, Vicki, has been a participant in the Quick Draw since 1995, and is known for colorful impressionistic works in acrylic and oil, often with a palette knife as her major tool. She has painted several commissioned murals and is very active promoting the arts in her community.
Kevin is an artist, writer, and teacher living in Santa Barbara. Nathan Vonk describes Kevin’s work, “There is a very cool graphic illustrators quality to his work that gives his scenes a story-book fantasy feel. But at the same time, there is a naturalist’s sense of botanical or geological documentation.”

Suzan has created some 500 paint-on-ink works. Her quick, relentless brush strokes, sharp lines, and incongruous use of color is essential in her work. Although many people tell her that her work looks unfinished, she encourages people to let their eyes complete the fragmentary parts, allowing for constant discovery.
John’s love of landscape painting is rooted in his knowledge of geologic processes. The large forces of shifting tectonic plates are extremely interesting to him as he interprets the gesture of the land he paints.
