2017 SYV VISITORS GUIDE
www.visitsyv.com/santa-ynez-valley-destination-guide/
SANTA YNEZ VALLEY ARTS STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS The Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association is proud to announce its scholarship winners for the academic year of 2017. Caira Moniot is the first place winner, and Elizabeth Brau the second place winner. These scholarship awards are meant to recognize achievements in the visual arts and help defray college expenses. Funds come from grants from local Foundations, donations to Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association’s General Scholarship Fund, and income from SYV Arts events such as QuickDraw. Caira Moniot has attended Santa Ynez Valley Union High School, where she pursued studio art studies in multiple mediums. She was president of the Art Club and also active in community service. She plans to attend Santa Barbara City College, continuing her art studies in addition to communication and journalism. The jurors were impressed with her work, and noted that combining art and journalism could be a positive goal. Elizabeth Brau also was a student at SYVUHS, and she too plans to continue her education at Santa Barbara City College. The jury committee admired her work with three dimensional materials as well as other media, and her tactile approach to art making. The humor exhibited in her work was also noted, along with support for continuing art studies. The Scholarship Program is part of Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association’s outreach to supporting arts in the community. Started in 1990, the program has funded scholarships for more than 60 local students. The organization has been active in the Valley art community since 1973. The Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, committed to expanding and supporting access and exposure to the arts in the Santa Ynez Valley, thereby enhancing quality of life in our community. The organization sponsors art programs, events, communications, and other efforts that mutually benefit artists, businesses, residents, and visitors to the Valley. Mary Taylor Jones, Light into Darkness of Alzheimer's, watercolor. Jones' piece was awarded the Juror's Choice Award in the June Award Show & Sale titled "Light & Dark" in the Guild Room @Gallery Los Olivos. SYV Arts' Guest Judge, Connie Rohde owner of The C Gallery, had this to say about the work. "This piece by Mary Taylor Jones was stirring emotionally and highly evocative. It encompassed the theme of Light and Dark both literally, figuratively, and emotionally. It moved me." This winning work and others will be on view and for sale now through July 5th, 2017. The Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, supporting the arts within the Santa Ynez Valley through affordable opportunities for artists to show and sell artwork, collaborations with non-profits and businesses on programs and events, investment in higher education for high school art students through scholarships, and a variety of outreach avenues, such as this digital arts magazine, that bring greater awareness to the cultural heart beat of the area.
“Roem is a singer with a ridiculous vocal range (this is increasingly rare in the music world celebrated by today’s media machine) and a troubadour’s soul. He’s used these qualities and his constant touring to develop a solid following in a number of American cities.” Ryan Spaulding (rslblog.com) “Inspired by soul and 60’s folk music, Baur’s star has been steadily increasing with music that is refreshing in today’s auto-tuned pop culture.” - Elena Ovalle (Examiner.com) Doors open 7pm/Show starts 7:30 $12 Admission/ $17 Reserved Seating Food Truck to be announced soon! TRAVEL THE ANIMAL ALPHABET WITH THE WILDLING MUSEUM
Animals: A-Z June 10 to October 9, 2017 Travel through the alphabet as the Wildling showcases a diverse artistic representation of animal species from African saddlebills to zebras and everything in between. The artworks range from realistic to abstract and represent many different mediums. Curated from private collections, artists, and even from animals themselves, Executive Director Stacey Otte-Demangate designed the exhibition to engage viewers with familiar species and discover some that are more obscure. Artworks featuring endangered species will have a special notation to help bring awareness to the crisis they face and what you can do to help. The Wildling has partnered with the Santa Barbara Zoo to offer programming and even a companion show featuring the artwork of Solvang School students and Montessori Center School of Goleta in the Volentine Discovery Pavilion. Artwork created by some of your favorite Santa Barbara Zoo residents will also be on display at the Wildling Museum. The Wildling is deeply grateful to the Towbes Foundation for its support of this exhibition. An opening reception will be held on June 10, 2017 from 3-5pm. Artists in the exhibit hail from Arizona, New Mexico, and Minnesota, as well as from our own area. Marc Muench, Kevin Box, Jessika Cardinahl, John Iwerks, Ray-Mel Cornelius, Katie Upton, Tina Curiel, Joel Sartore, Nicholas Wilson, and many more have works represented. The Wildling Museum, where art and nature meet, offers visitors a unique perspective on the importance of preserving our natural heritage. Through the eyes of artists, education and field experiences, guests can renew their relationship with the wilderness and understand its fragile nature - hopefully leaving more committed toward ensuring those spaces remain for future generations. THE CYPRESS GALLERY
119 E. Cypress Ave, Lompoc • Open Tue–Sun, 12-4PM & 12–5PM Daylight Savings www.lompocvalleyartassociation.com "A Walk Through the Cypress" June 2017 • By Terry Taylor June starts the summer, though I often think Memorial Day weekend gets the campers in summer mode. We remember June for some auspicious occasions like D-Day, when U.S. troops stormed the Normandy beaches (June 6, 1944) and so many died for our country and the launch of the first woman in space, Dr. Sally Ride (June 18, 1983), who made all of us so proud. June is also the birthday month for a wide range of historical characters from Anne Frank, Judy Garland and Frank Lloyd Wright to the Marquis de Sade and King George III. Lots of good reading available for these folks. June also brings a beautiful featured artist show to the Gallery by Lompoc artist, Barbara Willey. Barbara, a twelve-year member of the Lompoc Valley Art Association, showcases her love for nature with "Little Birds and Flowers," and her oil paintings are both bright and colorful as well as serene. I especially love her triptych of an American Robin, Cedar Waxwing and Varied Thrush, that when hung together, give every bird lover a daily dose of these beautiful creatures in floral settings. Another piece entitled "Hydrangeas" is painted with shades of blues and lavenders and hung in a stunning gold wooden frame. Please join Barbara and other art lovers at the artist's reception on Saturday, June 10th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. where you can enjoy all the art in the gallery and sample some wine and appetizers. The People's Choice award for May was "Wisteria" by Linda Gooch, which brings many gallery visitors to "ooh and aah" at the cottage covered with such amazing floral vines. Congratulations, Linda.
Barbara Willey, Cedar Waxwing
Walking through the gallery to the main rooms you will find a delightful array of glass works, acrylic, oil and watercolor paintings, photography and ceramic bowls and vases. Joellen Chrones' "Cinque Terre, Italy" of fused glass, is a colorful wall hanging depicting sail boats and Italian villas on the water, and Mikel Naccarato's "Remembering" features a small fused glass piece mounted on cold-cast bronze. In photography, Debby Fuller's "Three Red Barns" illustrates an interesting intersection of architectural planes in rusty red colors. A couple of paintings caught my eye. Carol Oliveira's "Meadow" depicts a storm waiting to happen in the green and oak-covered Central Coast hills, and the textured acrylic abstract design on canvas by Betsee Talavera is bright and colorful. We are so lucky to have so many talented artists in our community. Please join us at our general membership meeting on Tuesday, June 6 at 6:30 p.m. for refreshments and a special video presentation celebrating the work of renown American artist Georgia O'Keefe. The meeting will be held at Stone Pine Hall, 200 South H Street, Lompoc. Joelle Chrones Cinque Terra, Italy

More about some of the Participating Artists: Petti M. Pfau, Ceramic Artist In fifth grade I discovered the excitement of making vessels on a kick wheel and my love of clay turned to a lifelong passion. All through high school and college I worked on developing my own techniques in the ceramic arts, specifically in staining, slipping and glazing both decorative and functional pieces. I am particularly interested in impressing textures into thrown cylinders and slab pieces. While continued transformations are added to the piece with the additions of slips, stains and glazes which play up and enhance those textures. My work cycle revolves around exhibiting in retail and wholesale shows, online gallery sales and commissions.
Robbie Kaye, Photographer As a classically trained pianist, who later studied jazz and played rock and roll, Robbie Kaye comes to photography looking for visual melodies. Just as music can take you on a journey, make you laugh and cry and touch the deepest part of your soul so can a photograph. She is attracted to subjects that convey harmony as well as dissonance and is a storyteller who looks for visual narratives that define a place in time. Drawn to finding beauty in unexpected places, Robbie intends to intrigue, inspire, and evoke a reaction from the viewer and is a champion of the overlooked and sees her photography as a way to contribute beauty, create change and give exposure to societal issues.

THE LOS OLIVOS WINE MERCHANT & CAFE 2870 Grand Ave, Los Olivos
Art Without Borders Exhibit: Patricia Stalter: Wine and Art Through July 6, 2017
Patricia Stalter, Los Alamos Gas
A new exhibit of creative digital art that showcases the area in and around Los Olivos will be shown at Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café, from May 4 to July 6. Artist Patricia Stalter has a long history using digital photography that she transforms with image editing software, including Photoshop and Corel Painter. The resulting images make it clear that this process has become a medium for creating fine art. Patricia is active in local art organizations and her work is regularly hung at area galleries and in business establishments, with some featured at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. Twenty-plus years of experience with digital photography, plus inspiration from various classes have informed her creative work and process. More of her work can be seen on her website: www.patricia-stalter.artstwebsites.com This exhibit is one of a continuing series of shows made possible by the commitment of the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café to showcase local art and artists. Santa Ynez Valley Art Association, a nonprofit arts organization with over thirty years of history in the area, coordinates and manages the “art without borders” installation in cooperation with the Café. A portion of art sales benefits the organization, and these collaborative efforts - a way to keep art alive and accessible in the Santa Ynez Valley. FEATURED ARTIST: JOHN BRAMBLITT
John Bramblitt, Old Soul
John Bramblitt, Free Spirit
John Bramblitt, Old Reliable
John Bramblitt is an artist living in Denton Texas, his art has been sold in over thirty countries and he has appeared internationally in print, TV and radio. He has appeared on CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, ABC, NBC, FOX, Discovery Channel and BBC Radio and TV to name a few outlets, and he’s been featured in The New York Times and Psychology Today as well as designed the artwork for numerous magazine covers and even the artwork for major film productions. He’s the subject of the award winning documentary shorts “Line of Sight’ and “Bramblitt.” His work has received much recognition including the ‘Most Inspirational Video of 2008 from YouTube and three Presidential Service Awards for his innovative art workshops. And John is blind. When he lost the last of his vision in 2001 due to complications with epilepsy and Lyme’s disease, his hopes of becoming a creative writing teacher were shattered and he sunk into a deep depression. He felt disconnected from family and friends, alienated and alone. But then something amazing happened-- he discovered painting. He learned to distinguish between different colored paints by feeling their textures with his fingers. He taught himself how to paint using raised lines to help him find his way around the canvas, and through something called haptic visualization, which enables him to “see” his subjects through touch. He now paints amazingly lifelike portraits of people he’s never seen--including his wife and son. While art was always a major part of John’s life it was not until he lost his sight in 2001 that he began to paint, and it was then that he says, “Art reshaped my life.” John’s paintings are intensely personal, and are mostly taken from real people and events in his life. John’s workshops are unique in the art world in that they not only span the gap between beginning and professional artists, but also include adaptive techniques for people with disabilities. According to John, “Everyone has an artist somewhere in them; sometimes they just need a little help letting it out.” 13
