ON THE COVER
Michelle Ellis, Just Beachy, Acrylic / mixed media. As an “intuitive artist” most of Michelle's
abstract paintings are created from instinct, without reference material or consideration of the final outcome. She paints intuitively using energetic, spontaneous brushstrokes, building up and blending thin layers of paint, mostly on textured canvases. She is drawn to natural elements such as stone, cement, rock, rust, and other natural elements. When painting, she allows her creativity to take her to new heights using mixed media; including the introduction of wire, metal, and rust into some paintings, while staying true to her use of bold colors, textured canvases, and the occasional use of copper or silver leaf, or metallic accents. She has served as the Resident Artist at Brecon Estate Winery in Paso Robles since May 2014. ARTIST TALK SERIES AT THE WILDLING: NICOLE STRASBURG AND JESSIKA CARDINAHL The Wildling Museum is pleased to announce that the Artist Talk series will continue with Nicole Strasburg on Sunday, May 28 and Jessika Cardinahl on June 25. Both artists will be discussing their individual techniques, training, body of work, and upcoming projects. SUNDAY, MAY 28 • 3:00 PM $10 ($5 members of Wildling Musuem) Join Santa Barbara artist Nicole Strasburg to learn about her process and view her work. She has been a part of past exhibitions at the Wildling and is currently represented in Private Collections of the Santa Barbara Region. While Nicole is primarily a studio painter, she spends her time outdoors with her border collies gathering ideas. "Nature is an inspiration and always brings me back to center, puts me in perspective of my place in the world and offers comfort in its noisy silence." Nicole’s work can also be seen at Sullivan Goss and the Sundance Catalogue.
Nichole Strasburg, Local Sky
An exciting new project is currently underway for Nicole – an exhibition at the Wildling focused on the Santa Ynez watershed. Inspired by the work of Thomas Paquette, Nicole and five other local artists formed the Rose Compass group to explore the medium of gouache and create a unique exhibition. Scheduled for February 2018, this collaboration is sure to not just wow visitors, but teach them about our area’s water sources.
SUNDAY, MAY 28 • 3:00 PM $10 ($5 members of Wildling Musuem)
Jessika Cardinahl, Surrender
Join Jessika Cardinahl and hear about how she began her career as an accomplished actress and has transitioned into an accomplished artist. Jessika's artistic emphasis is in the application of large scale canvas and linen. She also employs the use of craft packing paper, large cardboard mats and clear, unfinished wood veneer as the foundation for her artwork. Among her favorite mediums are oil colors, oil sticks, Kremer powder color pigments, charcoal and aquarelles. Jessika has not only been the Wildling’s featured artist in the gift shop, but Surrender, a mixed media piece depicting a zebra will complete the alphabet in the upcoming exhibition, Animals: A-Z.
The Wildling Museum, where art and nature meet, offers visitors a unique perspective on the importance of preserving our natural heritage. Through the eyes of artists, education and field experiences, guests can renew their relationship with the wilderness and understand its fragile nature - hopefully leaving more committed toward ensuring those spaces remain for future generations. For more information, to volunteer and/or join as a member to support this important local arts and nature institution please visit www.wildlingmuseum.org. PRIVATE COLLECTIONS OF THE SANTA BARBARA REGION THROUGH MAY 29, 2017 Don't miss the Wildling's stunning exhibition comprised of artworks borrowed from the private collections of its members. Not only are visitors able to experience artworks that are not on public display, but they also get an inside look into how and why collectors choose their pieces. 6

THE CYPRESS GALLERY
119 E. Cypress Ave, Lompoc • Open Tue–Sun, 12-4PM & 12–5PM Daylight Savings www.lompocvalleyartassociation.com
"A Walk Through the Cypress" May 2017 • By Terry Taylor It's May and our hillsides are abloom with bright yellow mustard (thank you mission padres for marking the El Camino trail with seeds), brilliant orange California poppies and a colorful variety of lupine. After the soaking rains the growth is spectacular and I've seen some wildflowers on my various drives that I'd never seen before. Some of you made it to Carrizo Plains for the super bloom and the photos and paintings coming out of those trips are simply awesome. May in the gallery brings us a special show, entitled "Bloom," by featured artist Vicki Andersen, painter and muralist. If you know Vicki's work, you know she paints in vivid colors and bold palette knife strokes and her selection for this show is indicative of her lively style. Along with old houses (including Casa San Julian), white picket fences supporting a variety of flowers, central California hillsides (in bloom!) are also represented. I can't tell you which one is my favorite, because I'm drawn to them all. Please join the artist at her show reception on Saturday, May 6, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. where you can enjoy the show while sipping wine and nibbling on finger foods. This is a grand opportunity to see a large grouping of Vicki's paintings, all for sale. You will definitely want to see this show, which runs through May 28th. The People's Choice award for March went to Vicki Andersen for her painting of Jalama Beach. Also, the Best of Show winner of April's juried show was Alan Freeman for his "Upper Miguelito Canyon" acrylic painting. Congratulations to two fine painters.
Vicki Andersen, Casa San Julian
Other talented local artists and photographers are showing their colors, too. Diane Atturio's watercolor painting "Prickly Pear" is fresh with cactus greens and bright pink blooms. Linda Gooch's acrylic painting "Wisteria Cottage, Lompoc" will have some of you swooning over the beauty of the old cottage and cascading lavender wisteria. An acrylic painting by Ed Heintz entitled "Northern Lights" is fascinating in its subject matter and array of greens. I also like the simple watercolor portrait called "Granny," painted by Claudette Carlton. There is lots of photography exhibited this month, much of it gallery-wrapped on canvas (a great look), including a number of Nancy Hall's dramatic African animal shots, and work submitted by new LVAA members Barbara and Floyd Snyder. I especially like Barbara's dramatic seascape "17 Mile Drive" and Floyd's "U.S. Post Office, Los Olivos."
Barbara Snyder, 17 Mile Drive

Art Without Borders Exhibit: Patricia Stalter: Wine and Art Through July 6, 2017
Patricia Stalter, Los Alamos Gas
A new exhibit of creative digital art that showcases the area in and around Los Olivos will be shown at Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café, from May 4 to July 6. Artist Patricia Stalter has a long history using digital photography that she transforms with image editing software, including Photoshop and Corel Painter. The resulting images make it clear that this process has become a medium for creating fine art. Patricia is active in local art organizations and her work is regularly hung at area galleries and in business establishments, with some featured at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. Twenty-plus years of experience with digital photography, plus inspiration from various classes have informed her creative work and process. More of her work can be seen on her website: www.patricia-stalter.artstwebsites.com This exhibit is one of a continuing series of shows made possible by the commitment of the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café to showcase local art and artists. Santa Ynez Valley Art Association, a nonprofit arts organization with over thirty years of history in the area, coordinates and manages the “art without borders” installation in cooperation with the Café. A portion of art sales benefits the organization, and these collaborative efforts - a way to keep art alive and accessible in the Santa Ynez Valley.
