ARTISTE TASTING STUDIO IN LOS OLIVOS September 23rd and 24th

Artist James Pratt "Palette Knive Impressionist from South Carolina will be visiting and doing a live demonstration at Artiste Studio in Los Olivos. "For me, the palette knife is an ideal tool and I enjoy the sensation of applying thick buttery paints to the canvas. Painting with the knife, one can achieve the suggestion of movement and the changing of light by adding textures which can be thin or ridged. Using a knife in this way allows the paint to stand out and encourages a lively and impressionistic treatment, providing an exciting contrast of scale which adds greatly to the impact of the finished painting." - James September 23rd: VIP Intimate evening at Artiste. 6-8pm. Meet James and experience a live demonstration and new art exhibit. Light appetizers, featuring the new Twisted Twig by Chef B, new wine barrel tastings. RSVP only. 805-686-2626 or info@artiste.com September 24th: Open reception from 1-4 pm. Come meet James Pratt, and view his latest exhibit at Artiste Studio. Open to public, no reservation necessary. COLLABORATING OVER DISTANCES

by Mitra Cline - Foreverbird Studios

Collaboration is a skill with rewards that go beyond anything an individual is capable of accomplishing. By forming "collaborative circles" (self-forming groups of like-minded individuals with shared goals and similar skill levels in a particular area), all of the individuals in the circle have the opportunity to explore ideas and be innovative in a safe environment. For a successful circle, constant communication is key. But when your collaborative circle is wide spread with members outside of your geographical area – will extreme distance be a barrier to collaborative projects? One of the groups I work with has members that live in other countries and/or travel extensively around the world. We found that rather than geographical distance complicating our project, it actually increased our creative work. Online technology is always open to receive and record our spontaneous moments of inspiration. For example, by using six different technology platforms over a 10-week project, the digital environment provided a way for us to share the peaks of activity happening randomly in our different time zones. Rather than working in isolation until we could meet and discuss our findings, we could be "present" at the moment of inspiration by any one of the group. As the weeks went by, we found our project became more defined; until we successfully combined all of our individual ideas and creative work into a developed plan of action. By graphing our dialog and the technology tools used week by week, it was interesting to see a chaotic line, with peaks and valleys, rather than the sedate undulating "creative flow" line typical of a group working in close proximity of each other. I found my perspective enlarged through collaboration and discovered "belonging" and working together in a geographically expanded creative circle to be joyful. And with technology these days, the ability to find and form creative circles with members from almost anywhere makes for limitless opportunities to find like-minded individuals!

2ND SATURDAY ARTISANS

A TREE GROWS AT THE WILDLING by Stacey Otte-Demangate

The Wildling is proud to announce an exciting new permanent feature at the museum. Over a two-month period, artist John Iwerks painstakingly created a mural depicting a Valley Oak habitat – one of the most iconic natural features of the Santa Ynez Valley. Amidst the tree are a variety of local animals – mule deer, owls, magpies, red-tailed hawks and much more. The 8’ by 10’ mural is a permanent feature of the second floor gallery and launches a new endeavor to create a gallery that focuses on the Santa Barbara region. The first floor gallery will remain an art space that features a variety of nature art from a wide geographic scope. Artist John Iwerks was commissioned to do the mural based on his extensive experience with other mural projects throughout the area including Carrizo National Monument, Channel Islands National Park, California State Northridge, Sedgwick Reserve, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and more. Iwerks is also a member of the respected Oak Group and is a former caretaker of Arroyo Hondo and amateur naturalist.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Friday, Sept. 9 • 5:00 PM The Wildling Museum invites the community to an unveiling and ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of a new, permanent wall mural. All are invited to the ribbon cutting which will also include a reception.

When first commissioned, Iwerks spent considerable time exploring Valley oaks throughout the Santa Ynez Valley and created numerous sketches, drawings and paintings of both the trees and many of its inhabitants and neighbors. After executive director Stacey Otte-Demangate saw many of the drawings, the plan for the mural was expanded to include a display of many of his drawings as a way to illustrate his process in creating the mural as well as an encouragement to visitors to explore nature journaling and sketching themselves. The goals of the mural are to bring awareness to the unique natural beauty John Iwerks of our area, the diversity of species we see, and the threats these oaks face today. Other components will be added soon to maximize the educational value of the mural for all ages. Thanks to a grant from the Santa Ynez Valley Foundation, the Wildling will have a looping audio showcasing the natural sounds to be

The Wildling Museum, where art and nature meet, offers visitors a unique perspective on the importance of preserving our natural heritage. Through the eyes of artists, education and field experiences, guests can renew their relationship with the wilderness and understand its fragile nature - hopefully leaving more committed toward ensuring those spaces remain for future generations. For more information, to volunteer and/or join as a member to support this important local arts and nature institution please visit www.wildlingmuseum.org. John Iwerks

heard in an oak habitat, video clips, interpretive panels and more to be developed later this fall and winter. Thanks to a grant from the Goodall Family Foundation, curriculum-based lesson plans are being developed for grades K - 5 to encourage more schools to use the Museum and the mural as an educational resource. The mural is the first tangible progress to have come from a strategic planning effort in summer 2015 which was aided by input from many community members. Community experts were consulted throughout the project for their input about the right species (and their behaviors) to include in the mural. Thanks are due to Fred Emerson, Kate McCurdy of Sedgwick Reserve, John Evarts and Joan Lentz (author of "The Naturalists Guide to the Santa Barbara Region") for their input. The Wilding is very grateful to the Hutton Parker Foundation and other individual donors for their financial support of the mural project.

"We hope the mural will become a much-used educational tool for school teachers and other group leaders, to teach kids and families about our local landscape. The mural should also be a reminder that we can't take these amazing trees and habitats for granted. And maybe John Iwerks' artistic creation will inspire some budding artists along the way, too." - Stacey Otte-Demangate

WILDLING TO CELEBRATE THE CHANNEL ISLANDS In conjunction with the current exhibition, Celebrating the National Parks of California, the Wildling Museum of Art and Nature is offering two days of programming to celebrate the closest National Park – the Channel Islands.

Saturday, September 24: the whole family is invited to join the Channel Islands National Park Rangers and volunteers at the Wildling Museum of Art and Nature to explore the uniqueness of the islands off our coast! Throughout the day, Rangers and volunteers will have fun things to play with and explore. At 11am learn about how the kelp forests provide homes for an incredible diversity of animals, and how we use and eat seaweeds every day! The most pristine kelp forests in southern California are found around the park’s islands. Get out your sketch pad and draw the different kinds of seaweed! At 2pm the Channel Island Rangers will be hosting a pinniped fashion show. Through use of a dress-up activity, discover the amazing adaptations of seals and sea lions. The Channel Islands are home to the world’s largest populations of northern elephant seals and California sea lions.

Friday, September 30: the Wildling will be screening

the film, West of the West: Tales from California’s Channel Islands. Glorious cinematography, an original music score, and fascinating interviews from 70 days of filming are woven together into 14 revealing, memorable tales of the human history of California’s eight Channel Islands. The tales are told from the point of view of people who’ve experienced the islands — lived on, wrecked on, dived under, filmed, raised children, bootlegged, fished, surfed, sailed, explored and restored. This remarkable saga began 14,000 years ago, including a thriving Chumash maritime culture, and continues today. The film opened in Santa Barbara to two sold out audiences of 2,000 people each in March 2016 and it has been receiving acclaim ever since. Tickets are $5 for Wilding Museum Members and $10 for Non-Members.

California Scene Painting

Dan Holland

Albert McCurdy Sculptures

Sept 17- Nov 16

Originally from Texas, Dan moved to Longbeach, CA, then to Santa Barbara, and finally to the Central Coast to Arroyo Grande. Dan is a self-taught artist who is a true testament to the idea that each person is multifaceted. Dan works as a disciplined Database Administrator at Diablo Canyon, while one of the other sides of him paints wildly, gesturally, and very abstractedly. He uses both watercolors and acrylics. He draws on his regular travel to San Francisco, and likes the alternation and juxtaposition between country and city. Says Dan, “I gather up scenes from various locales and draw them until they're ingrained in my muscle memory....(I add) music to help bring a rhythmic quality to the effort.” People can expect to see abstracted scenes of Los Alamos, Arroyo Grande, as well as the Dan Holland “View From AGES” Acrylic on unprimed canvas, 50” x 44” San Francisco Presidio underground. Dan Opening Reception: 3rd Sat. Sept. 17. 4 – 6 pm is able to combine some graffiti-like street art with the more bucolic county scenery. Soup. Bread. Fire. ArtTalk: 3rd Sat. Oct. 15. Soup's On @ 5:30 From pastels in aqua and pinks to harsher black strokes and pencil overdraw, Dan www.thecgallery.com 466 Bell St. Los Alamos. CA 93440 connie@thecgallery.com 805-344-3807 manages to create a very palatable rawness. At first the viewing seems indiscernible , but a bit of patient observation brings the scene into readable focus. “The experience is transporting,” says Rohde, C Gallery Director. “You feel as though you’ve just discovered a new place at that very moment.” Dan will be exhibiting thirteen works of art. Albert McCurdy, a longtime C Gallery showing artist will be exhibiting several new works to compliment the gestural style of Dan Holland. McCurdy will be presenting classic modern geometrics, with bold colors. “They ground the paintings, which are visually flying around the space,” says Rohde, owner and C Gallery Director. McCurdy’s notable assorted wood sculptural bench will be on exhibit as well. Recently, McCurdy was curated into three other galleries in California.

The public is invited to the complimentary Opening Reception on September 17th at 4 pm as well to the Soup/Art Talk event one month later on Oct. 15th @ 5:30 pm. The artist will be available for questions at both events. For more information about the “California Scene Painting” show at The C Gallery, contact Connie at 805-344-3807 or connie@thecgallery.com. European Artistic Revolution: 70 Amazing Years—1867 & 1937 Degas to Chagall: Important Loans from the Armand Hammer Foundation and the SBMA European Art collection enable viewers to take a fascinating stroll through the dramatic visual transformation of European Art between 1867 and 1937. The exploration of the European artistic revolution begins with the precisely rendered, academic art of Adolphe-William Bouguereau and moves through the many art styles that were established in the subsequent 70 years.

Wandering through the rapidly developing art movements during these 70 years, viewers will have the opportunity to visually explore the radically changing visual depictions of color, light, line, everyday activities, politics, dreams, and emotions.

This dramatic and speedy shift to modernity gave birth to realism, impressionism, fauvism, cubism, surrealism, expressionism, abstract expressionism and primitivism, all of which are explored in this presentation. Speaker: Kathryn Padgett

Art Without Borders Exhibit Jay Johnson, Adamson Cottage

The Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Cafe • 2870 Grand Ave, Los Olivos Jay Johnson: Life and Its Many Moods Through November 3, 2016

A new show of paintings by plein aire artist Jay Johnson is on view at the Los Olivos Café. This exhibit of engaging work is well-described by the artist: “My painting style reflects calm settings through the use of fresh, vibrant color. Subtle tonal changes and the play of light and shadow accentuate dimensions and add a sense of fascination to bring the viewer into the picture. Compositions are exciting and powerful, while the illusion of detail creates images that are universally appealing. My paintings are fresh and vivid, depicting life and its many moods in emotionally uplifting views.” Now a full-time fine artist, Johnson also has an artistic background working in the film industry, which encouraged him to develop the interest he has had in making drawings and paintings since he was a small child. He is an active member of several area art organizations and has shown in many galleries. His work is included in private collections across the country. ABOUT THE ARTIST Jay Johnson was born in 1955 in Denver Colorado and even as a small child, he was interested in drawing and painting. As he pursued and developed his talents, his interest drifted toward the film industry. Jay has been designing visual effects, animated logos and titles for film for the last 30 years. He has designed main titles sequences for Academy nominated films such as “Dances with Wolves”, “Jerry Maguire” and “Titanic”. Jay has also designed film logos for Castle Rock Entertainment and HBO to name a few. Through those years of quick studies Jay has developed a Plein Air style of painting that reflects calm settings with the use of fresh vibrant color and deliberate brush work. He is now a full time fine artist. Jay will be a featured artist at this year's Quick Draw event, Sat. Nov. 5 at Flag is Up Farms.
