PERSONAL PROJECT
DE Santhosh is an architect & an aspiring architecture theroist & jornalist. He has particular interest in architetcural history & theory led him to do studies on architecture history from the onset of modernism, eventually gravitating to do a curatorial study on the work of Rem Koolhaas. He began to critically investigates the role that an architect plays in the society and how it has changed overtime . He believes in an architetcural practice that is well informed historically is necessary to capture the global zeitgeist. “Architectre , a rosetta stone of human existence wherein an architect is both the reader & the author ” Architecture serves as the reflective mirror of humanity, presenting itself as a built environment. Consequently, an architect’s work occupies a pivotal position, serving not only to observe and analyze the zeitgeist but also to project architectural theories and visions onto the mirror, thereby influencing the tangible world. Beyond mere interpretation, an architect’s actions are instrumental in shaping the world itself 2 I CONTENTS

The whole building is derived as a result of the “ ASSEMBLAGE “ of repetitive parts arranged in linearity. The parts work in tandem with each other , like the circulation, light , ventilation etc , arranged like a complex clockwork. Therefore the structure is akin to an engine like machinery where a collective of complex systems acts as “ ONE “achieving its own goals still living as a unified body.

SECTION EVOLUTION OF THE ASSEMBLAGE .
INTENT
FLOOR PLATES MIMIC “TATAMI MATS”
The philosophical ideation for the structure is derived from the poises of a spiritual master. The actionable intel provides a strategy for the framework and the stance of the structure.
The intent was to create a spiritual space for the practitioners. One which not only provides the functional requirements but also the ambience required for the spiritual practice. The main goal was to embody the spiritual nature of martial arts in architectural form.
IDEATION The building has ideation that stems from traditional Japanese architecture.
Martial arts and spirituality have always been hand on each other It has deep roots in the spiritual and the mental wellness of the people who train them. The origins of martial arts are deeply rooted in the Butddhist spiritual monks. So the practice has spirituality ingrained in them.
TATAMI GRIDS “Traditional Japanese floor mats define the proportions of the struture and provides a grid system for the assemblage to act upon “
The form is intended to reminisce the users of the wooden Japanese huts but with a brutalist sense. The form thus has to also show signs of assemblage like that of wooden joinery. Thus concrete has been treated as a wooden member. It also provides an expansive space for functionality.
PERSONAL WORK I 8
STATE OF MOTION The structure has a state of duality just like that of the martial arts, motion and stillness. A state of motion and stillness both co-exists within the same structure just like that of a spiritual man.
9 I PERSONAL WORK
These states of a spiritual man provide the emotional poiesis of spatiality. The archery space has columns that appear to be frozen in motion just like that of an archer at the cusp of the potential arrow. The energy is visible in tension in the columns like that of the archers’ bow.
STATE OF STILLNESS The structure has a state of duality just like that of the martial arts, motion and stillness .A state of motion and stillness both co exists within the smae struture just like that of a spiritual man These states of a spiritual man provide the emotional poiesis of spatiality. The meditation master exudes stillness like found in nature. The central courts exudes stillness in the atmosphere with a small pond of still water and acts like a light well and sun cover. The entire roof provies a sense of darkness and ethos to the space.

STRUCTURE / FRAME The structural system is a derivative of traditional Japanese structural systems. The working principles of traditional systems were translated and assimilated to the framed concrete. The beams are interlinked in a diagrid pattern and arranged in series and hold the floor plates in place. The structural section is a triangle which is very stable by itself.
10 I PERSONAL WORK
The enclosure volume is provided by pitched concrete slabs which are reminiscent of the pitched and thatched Japanese roofs. They provide not only shelter but also the ambience required by the programs like meditation and martial arts training. The enclosure slabs are in two sets with three slots in each of them with openings in glass to let in light.

Architectural Textile from Antiquity Reinterpreting the military tent of the Mughals A magnificent example of medieval textile architecture is the historic Lal Dera that remains the largest of all decorative objects to have survived from the Mughal era. Taking inspiration from its historic design, AD asked architect Sameep Padora and his team at sP+a, to reimagine this textile architecture in a contemporary manner. After months of planning and deliberation, the result is out for all to see at the AD Design Show 2023

Mughal Encampments
The Lal Dera
A magnificent example of medieval textile architecture is the historic Lal Dera that survived from the Mughal era. Its ornate walls and ceilings made of rich red silk velvet, hand-embroidered with gold thread are part of its allure. These vast tented encampments often accompanied monarchs on their travels, due to their portable nature. These tents were highly decorative in their appeal for providing shelter and comfort to its royal patrons.
Square in plan, the tent has sides measuring 7.5 metres long. The inner enclosure has sides measuring 3.5 metres long. Above the inner chamber, topped with a square embroidered canopy, the tent reaches its maximum height of nearly 4 metres. The inner chamber is created by an open, arched colonnade, which is repeated in the front and sides of the outer enclosure. The colonnades are formed of elegantly lobed archways,

This is sought through abandoning one’s nafs, ego or personal desires, by listening to the music, focusing on God, and spinning one’s body in repetitive circles, which has been taken as a symbolic construct for the Pavilion. The costumed fabric is taken as a material analogy in red color emulating the orignal red velvet of the Historic Lal Dera

OCTACOVE HOMES IMAGINING THE 3DPRINTED HOUSES FOR THE NEAR FUTURE
The 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) industry has undergone significant advancements in recent years, especially within the domain of 3D-printed houses . ICON’s groundbreaking endeavors in this field are both catalytic and indispensable particularly in regions facing housing shortages and challenges. We wholeheartedly share the dedication to revolutionizing the construction industry and confronting urgent global housing challenges. Our prior works in the housing sector have not only propelled our expertise but have also inspired our eagerness to engage in Initiative 99, providing a unique opportunity to share our narrative with a global audience. We aim to inspire a broader audience, including policymakers, investors, and the general public about the positive impact that 3D printing can have on the future of housing.

CLIMATIC CONSTRUCT Our overarching intent was to envision the house as passive, prompting the inclusion of a central courtyard adorned with a tree—a natural focal point bringing nature into the heart of the structure. The courtyard’s strategic placement leverages the stack effect in summer, facilitating the ventilation of hot air. Aligning with our primary goal of printing the roof as a monolith, the courtyard’s walls follow the same corbelling technique that supports the external walls, culminating in the formation of arch supports. This architectural choice not only imbues the structure with aesthetic appeal but also underpins its structural integrity.
LOCATION : ALPINE, TEXAS Climatic summary : In a typical year, Alpine, Texas temperatures fall below 50F° for 114 days per year. Annual precipitation in Alpine (the lowest in the US) snow covers the ground 0 days / year (the lowest in the US). The humidity in Alpine, Texas is below 60% for approximately 253.8 days or 69.5% of the year
OPERABLE SKYLIGHTS The Sklights are placed on top of each cicular niches provide natural light to the spaces. They are also openable suring summer times hot air can be vented out. The skylight is domed to deflect rain water and are made with heat resistant glass dome shaped for integrity.
PRINTED IN FURNITURES
WATER CAPTURING
The house boasts many furnitures which are printed in 3DCP not only as standalone units but also as a continual printing logic. The beds , sofa and dining table are printed as well as wash basins and wc. This greatly reudces the finishing out cost and time.
The wall tilets as the height goes up and this aids in an easy water run off suring rains. The walter flows down the wall with ease and then is channeled to the rain water system. Thus there is no water stagnation which ensures long durability of the houses in all weather.
PERFOMATIVE WALLS
COURTYARD STACK
SWITCHABLE E-GLASS
The walls printed in layers with Lavacrete provides insulation against heat and weather. The wall acts like a thermal barrier so the temperature fluctuations are minimised and a steady temperature is maintaine throught the house in all of the weather cycles.
The intent was also to imagine the house as passive so the courtyard was inserted in the middle as a way of bringing nature into the centre with a tree. The benefits of the courtyard are many as they aid in the stack effect in summer by means of ventilation of hot air.
The areas between the roofs are covered with skylights and then are fitted with electrnicaly switchable glasses which can be made opaque or transparent as per the user needs and the climate. This not only aids in privacy but also as a sun shading element during peak summers

PRINTABILITY Our approach is rooted in a clear printing logic, where the initially straight walls undergo a transformation. . This process is complemented by an inner wall corbelling out from the courtyard, resulting in the formation of an arch support with a cantilever angle meticulously maintained at 54 degreesIn addressing the need for openings, a diamond-shaped jaali wall has been intricately designed in double layers. This design not only serves functional purposes, facilitating ventilation and privacy, but also adds an aesthetic dimension to the structure. Beyond this, we have seamlessly integrated planters into the house, utilizing 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) technology to ensure optimal space utilization. This not only contributes to a harmonious blend of architecture and nature but also significantly reduces costs and construction time for the end user.
