Compostur, Santiago de Compostela’s Official Tour Operator In view of the dynamic nature of the tourist industry and the high degree of competition among an increasingly saturated number of destinations, the municipal company Turismo de Santiago decided to participate actively in the direct commercialisation of initiatives in the national and international markets. This has resulted in Compostur, the city of Santiago’s official tour operator, a brand belonging to Turismo de Santiago that is run under concession by the Viajes Viloria wholesale/retail travel agency. COMPOSTUR has the following main objectives: • Defining, preparing and designing the necessary tools for generating products based on two different concepts: Santiago de Compostela and the Way of St. James. • Creating commercialisation channels with the national and international tourist markets, in order to promote all product areas that are generated in relation to the city and the Way. COMPOSTUR is basically made up of three main fields: 1. Creation of the city’s official reservation office, based on a 902 hotline and the website www.SantiagoReservas.com 2. Management of the commercial area within Turismo de Santiago’s tourist offices, whose role will change from informing about to providing services: accommodation bookings, contracting activities (guided tours, trips, rafting, golf, spas, tourist transport, etc). 3. Definition and creation of tourist packages to be marketed in the wholesale and retail market, both nationally and internationally. This is the first initiative in Spain regarding an OFFICIAL LOCAL TOUR OPERATOR, with both public and private capital: COMPOSTUR.

Santiago de Compostela, a World Heritage City and capital of Galicia. Since the 9th century, when the Apostle James’ tomb was discovered, it has also been the final destination of a thousand-year-old pilgrim route: the Way of St. James, which has transformed this “finis terrae” into a meeting place of faith and thinking in the Western world. Santiago de Compostela is a stone apparition nestled among the green forests of northwest Spain and the nearby Galician “rias”, made of the granite of its Cathedral and its monasteries, its numerous churches, its university buildings, its stately houses and squares in which time has stood still. Visitors can enjoy its treasures in thirteen museums, as well as the surprising richness of its contemporary architecture, surrounded by an outstanding series of parks and gardens. Its cultural expressions include the “Apóstol” Festival, declared of International Tourist Interest, music, cinema, theatre and dance festivals, or permanent and travelling exhibitions. Numerous university students, as well as the arrival of exhausted pilgrims moved by devotion or those attracted by its monumental wonder, provide the city and its nights with unequalled vitality and dynamism. And there is also the renowned Galician gastronomy, based on fish, seafood and meat, accompanied by top-quality Galician wines.

Santiago is the best gateway for touring Galicia, a region at the end of the earth: its green landscape, the richness of its serene “rias”, the force of its oceanic coastline, its marvellous heritage and its ancestral customs. A magical land that used to be inhabited by the Celts, Galicia has two more merits: its peculiar authenticity and its renowned hospitality.

Inhabitants Approx. 100,000, which rise to 200,000 including its area of influence. This is a youthful city in which close to 30,000 university students live. Economy Based on the tertiary sector, especially tourism, education and services related to the public administration. Language Most of the population speaks both Galician and Spanish. Climate Moderate oceanic with mild temperatures throughout the year. In winter the mean temperature is 8oC, while in summer (May to September) the temperature ranges from 20 to 27oC. Gastronomy Seafood is emblematic of a simple, family-style cuisine. According to tradition, it is especially tasty in months containing the letter “r” (September to April). It is accompanied throughout the year by fish, Galician beef, pork, Galician pie, cheese and five kinds of certified Galician wine.

Crafts and Shopping Gold and silver articles, jet-stone jewellery, ceramics, enamel, cast iron, wood or leather from more than 300 local workshops. There are also shops selling souvenirs, gastronomic products and especially clothes and accessories. These include important Galician fashion names: Inditex, especially Zara, Adolfo Domínguez, Florentino, Antonio Pernas, Roberto Verino, Purificación García…

Regional Day. On the previous evening there is a fireworks display and a son et lumière show in Plaza del Obradoiro. The entire fortnight features concerts and cultural events in the streets. The second-most important date is the Ascension, which is marked by a week-long traditional festival. In addition to Spanish public holidays, there are also some local ones such as May 17th (Day of Galician Letters) and August 16th (St. Roque).

Airport Is located less than 10 km from the city. The main destinations are: Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Valencia, Malaga, Seville, Tenerife South, Palma de Majorca, London, Paris, Rome, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Zurich, Geneva, Brussels, Lisbon, Jerez, Alicante. Prizes and Awards Santiago de Compostela has been included, since 1985, in the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Cities. That organisation considers it “an ideal city that exudes history and timelessness.” Since then, the city has accumulated prestigious awards that reflect its worldwide renown as regards the preservation and habitability of its old town.

Safety Santiago is a very safe city in which you can enjoy a peaceful walk during the day or night. Festivals Santiago de Compostela’s main festival is held on July 25th, St. James’ Day and Galicia’s

Moreover, it has almost 1,500,000 m2 of public green spaces, which represents a total of almost 15 m2 per inhabitant and means that the city exceeds the Spanish and European average. Santiago de Compostela has likewise received several international prizes and awards due to its scenic and environmental quality.

WAY OF ST. JAMES The pilgrimage to Santiago soon became the most outstanding and most profoundly experienced religious and cultural phenomenon in the Middle Ages. This was recently acknowledged by the European Parliament, which designated the Way as Europe’s First Cultural Itinerary, and by UNESCO, which declared it a World Heritage Route.

History According to an ancient tradition, St. James, one of the twelve apostles, travelled to Hispania and reached Galicia, at the end of the earth, to spread Christianity. In the year 44 he was executed in Jerusalem. Since his burial was forbidden, his disciples sailed the sea as far as Galicia, where he was buried. His tomb was forgotten until the year 813, when a bright light indicated the site. After the tomb’s discovery, the Apostle was proclaimed the patron saint of the small Christian kingdom in the northwest Iberian Peninsula, becoming a guide and support of Christendom, while Islam prospered in the centre and south of the Peninsula. A chapel was erected on the site and, with the passing of time, it was turned into a monumental Cathedral. A wonderful priestly city, Santiago de Compostela, arose and grew around the Cathedral. This also marked a turning point in the spiritual history of a continent that soon undertook the construction of a road to reach the precious relics.

The Ways of St. James However, the “Way of St. James” is in fact 9 pilgrim routes, which are called after the pilgrims’ place of origin: • • • • • • • • •

The Route Par Excellence: the French Way of St. James There are two alternatives, depending on the place where pilgrims enter Spain from France. However, the French Way, strictly speaking, enters Spain via Saint Jean Pied de Port (France) and runs for 774 kilometres through the provinces of Navarre, La Rioja, Burgos, Palencia, León, Lugo and A Coruña. Averaging 20-25 kilometres per day, it usually takes around 30 days to reach the final destination.

Compostela Holy Year In the 12th century, the papacy granted the Plenary Jubilee of the Holy Year, thereby making Santiago the Third Holy City after Jerusalem and Rome. Since then, whenever the Apostle’s feast day (July 25th) falls on a Sunday (which takes place according to the following pattern: 6, 5, 6, 11 years), thousands of pilgrims come to receive forgiveness for all of their sins. There have been 118 Holy Years: the last ones were in 1993, 1999, 2004 and the next ones will be in 2010 and 2021.

The Compostela This is the document that certifies that the Way has been completed according to Christian devotion. It is granted to pilgrims that justify having completed at least the last 100 km on foot or horseback or the last 200 km by bike. To that end, a log is provided and stamped daily in the hostels and parishes through which the pilgrim passes.

The tour of the Geography and History Faculty includes the auditorium, the grand reading hall and the terrace. The route ends in Casa da Balconada.

Visit to the Cathedral Roofs You enter via Palacio de Xelmírez (Obradoiro) and go up inside to reach the Cathedral roofs, where you can admire interesting views of the city and learn about the Basilica’s history. The itinerary is characterised by the two neighbouring countries, separated by the River Miño, and goes through border and stately regions, marked by defensive forts and viewpoints, carpeted with “Rías Baixas” vineyards. The trip tours the medieval acropolis of Tui, dominated by its cathedral, and then enters Portugal to visit the fort of Valença do Minho, a border enclave of historical-artistic interest as well as a grand bazaar. RÍAS ALTAS – COSTA ÁRTABRA: Legendary Seas Full-day trip

The Costa Ártabra is the region of the Artabrians. Ancient legends belonging to the Celtic oral tradition shared by Galicia and Ireland speak about Breogán, son of Brath, as the king in this area and founder of the city of Brigantia (Art-o Briga). He is supposed to have built in what is now A Coruña a tower or lighthouse that was later reconstructed by the Romans: the Tower of Hercules. The landscape combines sea and mountains with a coastline of beautiful beaches, some that are sheltered, located inside the “rias”, and others that are wild and open to the ocean. The terrain gradually becomes more difficult, climbing to heights of more than 500 m to form spectacular cliffs overlooking the sea. This is a region of natural viewpoints, “cruceiros” (stone crosses), forests, wild horses and legends, including Galicia’s most famous rural sanctuary: San Andrés de Teixido, an ancient pilgrimage site. Finally, the trip stops in the city of A Coruña to visit, among other sights, the Hercules Lighthouse.

LUGO: Roman City Full-day trip

With more than 2,000 years of history, Lugo enjoyed the status of district capital during Roman times. Its walls date from the year 14 B.C. and are a World Heritage Site. With a perimeter of more than 2 km, which can be toured entirely on foot, they alone make the city worth visiting. Behind the walls lie narrow streets with a traditional atmosphere and historical squares featuring monuments of interest, among which the Cathedral stands out. Near Lugo is the Viladonga “castro”, which is one of the most complete fortified settlements that can be visited. There is also an educational museum that explains the lifestyle of Galicia’s inhabitants when the Romans arrived. Lugo’s gastronomy provides another reason for making this trip.

OURENSE AND O RIBEIRO: Medieval Towns amidst Vineyards Full-day trip

Ourense was already important in Roman times, which is the period to which the plinths of its old bridge belong. Its main features are its Cathedral (12th century and later) and the churches, streets, squares and gardens of its elegant historical quarter, which reflects the good lifestyle of a peaceful provincial city. This is also the city of the “Burgas”: three springs with a temperature of around 70oC, whose existence has given rise to many theories and explains the importance of hydrotherapy in the area. Nearby is the O Ribeiro region, one of inland Galicia’s most interesting.
