The Brief Our aim was to design an interface for two groups of people, the “organised family” and the “young tech elite”. The interface should endeavour to simplify and organise the exponentially increasing number of devices and applications in the marketplace into a universal interface which connects them all, with the intention of improving their personal lives as well as their work lives.

Market Research & Comparative Analysis

Research

Market Research & Comparative Analysis Personas Scenarios

Before we set about defining our initial interface concept we decided to analyse products that were already in the marketplace as well as those that were currently in development. We decided to start off by looking at companies that use and offer cloud networking to their customers. iCloud automatically and securely stores your content so it’s always available to your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC. It gives you access to your music, movies, apps, latest photos, and more from whichever device you happen to be using. And it keeps your email, contacts, and calendars up to date across all your devices. No syncing required. No management required. In fact, no anything required. iCloud does it all for you.

Sky go allows Sky TV customers to watch channels that they already subscribe to, on two of their mobile devices at no extra cost. It is available on laptops, selected android smartphones, the iPad, iPhone and Xbox 360. Based on the customer’s subscription they can stream movies and sports direct to their device and enjoy over a hundred hours of entertainment using their wifi or 3G connection.

Dropbox offers 2GB of free cloud storage to all its users, with subscriptions of up to 100GB available. Files saved on the Dropbox are instantly saved to the user’s computers, phones, and the Dropbox website. Dropbox works with Windows, Mac, Linux, iPad, iPhone, Android and BlackBerry. It even works when offline. Dropbox only transfers parts of files that change, not the whole thing. Shared folders allow people to work together on the same projects and documents.

GoToMyPC provides a fast & secure connection to your Mac or PC, allowing you to access & work on your data, files, network & applications from anywhere. It also enables the user to synchronise files and folders efficiently between computers for better organisation.

Google Drive is the latest offering from Google, set to rival Dropbox with 5GB of storage space free for all its users. Apart from the extra storage space, its features are very similar to Dropbox, it is available on PC, Mac and Android devices and will be coming soon on the iPhone and iPad. Google Drive gives you instant access to Google Docs, and users may upgrade to 25 GB for less than $2.50 a month.

Personas & Scenarios To determine what we wanted our interface to look like, we focused our research on interfaces that may not have been particularly successful in the past, but over years of testing and refining, were improved to be interfaces that worked with great efficiency. A perfect example of this is Sony with their new smart TV interface. Previous iterations for both TV and PlayStation received much criticism from customers. Taking the feedback on board Sony have managed to produce a well presented interface where the user can find all the apps and online services in a tile based layout, which doesn’t look too dissimilar to the Windows 8 Metro interface shown below. The left-hand side of the Sony Entertainment Network screen shows a video thumbnail of the current TV channel the user is watching. Beneath this is a box that can be configured to display the time and date, or alternatively, the latest tweets from the user’s Twitter feed. All on-demand video services and Internet apps are now listed under the apps tile. The tiles for videos and music show the latest and most popular releases on Sony’s own Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited rental and subscription services. Now, there is also a favourites tile where regularly used services or apps can be accessed faster.

Persona 1 - The Rolands (Achievers) Mr Paul Roland is 45 years old, he works as an account and earns £30k pa. His wife Judy is 42 years old and is a primary school teacher, she earns £20k pa. They have two children named Neil and Trina, that are 12 and 13 years old respectively, they are both school students. The family’s monthly outgoings are £2500 including the mortgage. They live in a three bedroom semi-detached house in Gosforth, Newcastle Upon Tyne. They have a Volvo car, and own the following gadgets: - Internet 3D TV, Desktop PC, Laptop, iPad, Kindle and they each have a smart phone. Scenario 1 Paul has lost his phone, he is concerned about the confidential information stored on it relating to his work that could have serious repercussions if it fell in the wrong hands. After reporting it to the police, he goes to his laptop and accesses the universal interface that is connected to all his devices, and is able to delete all the data on his phone. However if the phone is recovered he can easily re-enter it, as all the data is stored on the cloud. Scenario 2 Judy stored all her students’ reports on her computer at school, however with the parent-teacher meeting coming up, she needs to prepare what she will be discussing with the parents, she accesses her work computer from her laptop via the universal interface at home to get all the information she needs.

Persona 2 - The Joneses (Strivers)

Persona 3 - Harry Morgan (Achiever)

Mr Andrew Jones is 28 years old, he works as a business account managing assistant at Nat West and earns £20k pa. His wife Kelly Jones is 25 years old and works as a sales consultant at Republic, they have a little boy named Peter who is 4 years old. They live in a two bedroom flat in Rotherham, and Andrew drives a VW Golf. They possess the following devices: - 32” LCD Television with Sky+ box, Xbox 360 w/Kinect, Dell laptop, Andrew and Kelly each have their own smart phones. The car has GPS and bluetooth.

Harry is 20 years old and an IT undergraduate on exchange from America. Aside from his studies, he works on projects coding applications and websites for various clients. He earns a decent yet varying wage from his work. He also gets a student loan, to help him cover his costs. He brought his laptop to England, but left his desktop pc back in New York, he also owns a HTC mobile phone.

ScenarioPeter’s baby minder is sick and the parents cannot find a replacement for him, so Andrew decides to stay at home and work from there. With the help of the universal interface Andrew is able to access all his confidential work files that are on his work computer on to his laptop at home and go about his work while also watching over Peter.

Scenario Harry chose not to bring his desktop pc due to its restricted mobility and hassle, however he has certain media on his desktop that he would like to access from his laptop in Manchester, he also can’t access certain websites and media players that he frequented back home. He uses his universal interface to access all his media from his laptop.

She lives with her parents in a large four bedroom house in Harrogate, they are an affluent family with a combined income of £80k pa. Beth receives pocket money, but her parents also buy her more expensive items themselves. Scenario Beth’s phone contract ran out last month, and she has been looking forward to getting her new phone. Since the universal interface is connected to a limited number of devices, she transfers all her data to her new phone from the cloud and deactivates her old phone and adds her new one.

The Initial Concept

Concept Development

The Initial Concept Flow Chart & System Mapping First Interface Designs User testing

From analysis of the research carried out, we settled on a concept of a cloud-based interface that was more than just a storage application and was not limited in terms of its compatibility across devices. We also did not want it to be limiting in terms of its cloud-storage capacity, but since our research showed anything more than a few gigabytes quickly became very expensive, our interim solution to that problem was a networked storage device which would essentially act as a personal server, but unlike GoToMyPc, the user’s other devices are not required to stay powered on. To access data, the user can simply directly stream anything on their networked storage device direct to their other connected devices at any time. The service would aim to cover all conceivable requirements of the user, from work-related to entertainment as well as social media. With the development of more and more cloud-based apps, the interface’s potential would continue to expand. We wanted the cloudbased interface to have a tile-based layout that was easily customisable. We designed a feature specifically for organised families, that was a digital notice board designed to be less easily overlooked unlike the conventional post-it note on the fridge door. Other features would include: easily swapping screens as well as media between devices, voice recognition, cloud-based gaming, intelligent text and image detection for auto back-up in the cloud, secure remote access of devices within the network and a “wipe” facility for lost or stolen devices.

We tested them with two groups of users, those with an introduction and brief instructions on how to use the interface and those without, we then took our results and implemented them to improve how our interface would function. We also carried out a survey regarding interfaces that users have encountered in the past and use daily, and asked their verdict on them, and what features they would like to see in a new interface.

The Notice board

The Home page

The Notice board is a feature specifically for families, it is a digital communication tool where family members can quickly get in touch with each other, send messages or reminders as they would on a Notice board at home, which is usually overlooked. The Notice board is situated on the standby screen that can be seen before entering into the homepage.

The homepage of the interface houses the apps and widgets that are on that particular device. The interface is completely customisable and offers three main types of app tiles, the basic tile, folder tiles and widget tiles. And you can also access the drop down menu, Magnus Media and shortcuts to most visited applications at the bottom of the homepage.

Messages from family members on the Notice board are colourcoded, and can be assigned individually to each member.

The folder tile It allows the user to save space bringing together similar apps under one tile

To exit the Notice board the user simply peels it away

Drop-down Menu

Media is accessed through the plus button situated on the bottom left-hand side of the home screen. When opended, the user is offered three tabs of storage; OnDevice, InCloud and MiDrive. To move media between locations, the user simply drags and drops the file to a different tab. The cloud, with it’s limited capacity, is purely for backing up mobile devices, although it is possible to move files to it. The cloud is is then backed up further on the MiDrive. The Magnus Media Store is also situated here. Here the user can buy apps, movies, music and more.

The user can access all the features and functions of the interface from the drop down menu.

Open with the problems and obstacles we have found with the current offering of technology, i.e. Too Many Devices: TV, Games Consoles, Phones, Computers, Storage Devices etc, Uncompatible Interfaces, Not Networked, On-board Storage + Processing, Cloud Based Storage expensive.

In this part of the video we will show three different personas using the interface on various devices to communicate with each other. The stay at home wife posts a message on the Interface’s Notice Board by dictating her message to ‘Ortis’ while she cooks. We then jump to the husband at the office who receives his wifes message and replies. He receives a reply instantaneously(showing the seamless interaction with others through the Interface). An email pops up on his screen, he goes into it and copies a meeting to his planner which cleverly recognises the time and location out of the highlighted text. He Then forwards the meeting information via an instant messenger app to his colleague, the young tech elite. The young tech elite is out taking photos scouting for a project and replies to his message and sends him a photo taken on his/her smartphone updating on the progress. The Man in the office replies, “ good work have a good weekend”. The scene ends with the young tech elite walking off.

Looking over the project, we feel it has been successful. We were able to produce good, useful concepts such as the notice board for families and remote wipe, among others. Our user testing proved that the interface is clearly laid out and can be easily navigated through. When it comes to functionality the interface purposely feels familiar, but it is the further functions and infrastructure of the network, as we envisioned, that sets it apart from other operating systems. We believe that ‘MiDrive’, the networked storage device situated at home, is a great, cost-effective alternative to subscribing to a mass cloud storage service. ‘Ortis’, the personal voice controlled assistant was imagined as an alternative to Apple’s ‘Siri’. Rather than pressing a button you simply hail the feature by calling out ‘Ortis’. The film we produced shows the interface exactly how we imagined it. It runs a little longer then we had hoped, but we feel this was necessary to show the full extent to which we have thought the concept through. The layout is clearly explained, with functions and locations indicated to the user in a smooth manner. The voiceover, as well as text, guides the viewer with ambient background music accompanying it nicely, panning in and out when the narrator speaks. We were pleased with the rendered quality of the animations even though the process was time intense. Another aspect we are particularly proud of is the branding. After initially struggling to find a suitable name, we settled on ‘Magnus’, after the founder of Ericsson, ‘Lars Magnus Ericsson’. We also liked the fact that it means “great” in Latin. The circles above each pillar of the ‘M’ may first signify an umlaut and the Scandinavian origin of Ericsson, but one ultimately recognizes it as two people holding hands or connecting. To conclude, we are very happy with the project we have produced, and feel like we learnt a lot about interfaces and cloud storage through the course of the assignment.
