JEWELLERY DIRECTIONS 2014+ The idea of fine jewelry has not changed much over the years. Made from precious gems and metals, the importance of the piece has always been directly proportionate to its value, rarity and provenance. It is an unfortunate bit of human nature that draws us to the unobtainable – that desire for what can so rarely be owned. So what then happens when the definition of precious begins to shift? Rather than coveting the most decadent gemstones, fashionistas are clamoring for statement pieces that speak to their sense of self, rather than the standard definition of what is prized. This evolving sentiment has brought the designers themselves to the very forefront of a renaissance in the world of jewelry: one where singular, distinct aesthetics are esteemed above all. Or, in other words, where the sum is more important than its parts. Take, for example, the revived world of ‘couture costume’ jewelry, often made from materials such as wood, bronze, resin, and even glass. These lower priced materials allow designers to break free from traditional silhouettes and explore diverse eras, cultures and sensitivities. By merging unlimited creativity with old-world construction techniques, a new category of accessories is born – those valued not necessarily for intrinsic purposes, but for the art of quality and design. The biggest sign of its catching on? Fine jewelry retailers are starting to stock these pieces alongside their venerable rubies, emeralds and diamonds, allowing women the freedom to mix and match high and low with abandon. On the other side of the spectrum, the very top end is enjoying unparalleled success. ‘Limited edition’ has become an important part of a woman’s lexicon, forcing brands to think about production in new ways. This artisan mentality is key to the reshaping of the industry that one relied on making women want only what everyone else had. Rediscovering and embracing this ‘uniquely mine’ state of mind is only the beginning of the revolution.

THE ALCHEMIST 2014+ The Alchemist merges the beauty of nature with the art of scientific progress. Faced with the succession of crises that has shaken up the world, rationality and confidence in scientific solutions are the new panacea. Science is everywhere, from the finite boundaries of material reality to the infinite vastness of conceptual universes. It embraces both the real world and the world of ideas. New generations of artists and designers are seeing science and mathematics as a new source of beauty and inspiration. Having reached the limits of nature’s tolerance, we are finally looking for ways to live on this planet without destroying it and a new way of viewing and valuing nature. In the race for new discoveries and solutions, we look to nature under the microscope, which enables us to reproduce its mechanisms and find intelligent solutions to global advancement in all domains. Creation is taking inspiration from the global ecosystem function to the atomic structure. Designers are searching for sustainable solutions by emulating nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies. The goal is to create products, processes, and new ways of living that are well-adapted to life on earth over the long haul. Drawing inspiration from natural phenomena, mimicking processes and patterns found in nature to create unique and inspirational products; an accelerated sense of urgency as science is heralded as the saviour of a troubled era.

SHADOW REALITY 2014+ We are living a strange period, full of uncertainty and hope. The rejection of mass consumption and frivolity is beginning to occur and society is looking for dreamlike reality. Culture reflects these feelings and is yearning for everything that is spiritual and mysterious, becoming a dark melancholic atmosphere, with historic and poetic references. As the crisis provokes a strong urge for creativity and innovation, it is time to let imagination run wild and play with previous aesthetic codes. In a world where life exists through pervasive, interactive and immersive screens, a new age is exploring the strangeness of imaginary worlds, taking roots in the rococo artistic movement and evolving in all sorts of metamorphoses or mutations. Dreams and nightmares lead us to imagine disturbing parallel realities. We are well aware that we cannot take ourselves too seriously and we are becoming more and more sensitive to the beauty of imperfection. In an upside-down world, distortions and other phantasmagorias have an intense impact, creating newness despite the usual codes. Moving, fluid metamorphoses create new standards, a deep desire for a poetic, newly-enchanted everyday existence reappears and a renewed sense of spiritualism emerges.
SHADOW REALITY In response to austerity measures and recent financial crises, the design world has launched a rebellion with opulent displays of wealth, heading for a dreamlike reality. This trend is playing around with previous aesthetic codes and offers a 21st Century version of Rococò style mixed with a dark and melancholic atmosphere.

There is a mixture of cultures and knowledge, with an emerging multicultural design and both traditional and contemporary knowledge are being exchanged. The frontiers of creativity are in perpetual motion and the internet has accelerated the process. We are witnessing the emergence of a sort of global culture, one that is, however, accompanied by greater awareness of each person’s identity and know-how. The desire to preserve triggers a return to traditional values with an eccentric twist, exploring traditions from the east as well as the west in a singular but collective way. Old craft techniques are used in new contexts. Consumers are now starting to yearn for a more handmade approach to their purchases with key brands pioneering this unique approach. A renewed interest in traditional craft can be noted and is set to influence future trends in a synthesis between technology and craftsmanship, innovation and tradition.

VISIONARY STRUCTURES 2014+ An innovative and experimental mood that combines art and science, technology and simplicity in response to a need for an efficient lifestyle and innovation as the only way to survive in an ever more global and competitive world. The graphic and print inspiration art movement, which followed the social unrest of the 1930’s, inspires new generations who now see new possibilities with the use of technologies. High Definition has given way to three dimensions to augment reality. Motion, technosensitive engineering and 3D effects play with forms and are forging new perspectives. Made of angular and fractal geometry, a new kinetic aesthetic is taking roots . It is time to be visionary, ultramodern and structural yet pared down. The search for new standards guides us toward generative art which is often used to refer to computer generated artwork that is algorithmically determined. It becomes more and more relevant as consumers are faced with vast amounts of information and only have a short time in which to process it. At the same time, reconstruction became a necessity, rebuilding our economies and markets. It will inspire matter of fact design and useful products with clever details. Functionality takes life through mechanical engineering and graphic fascination embodying an innovative approach and a strong desire for modern shapes.

4 BEST JEWELLERY TRENDS FOR 2014 Swarovski Gems’ release of its annual Gem Visions report is sure to have tongues wagging as the company profiles jewellery trends for 2014 in a stunning collection of gemstones and jewellery design. “Conversation” is the chosen word to sum up the design and jewellery trends in the approaching year. Gem Visions 2014 is a collaborative report featuring design directions, themes and inspirations. The latest edition nurtures ingenious concepts and megatrends that are said to leave consumers with enigmatic, surreal, contemplative and tribal stories to tell. The fashion-forward company has collaborated with jewellery experts, a historian and industry insiders to develop a clear direction and focus for 2014. As part of the project, jewellers from around the world have carefully matched colours, materials, gemstone cuts and Swarovski gems to the design directions of the forthcoming year. These jewellery pieces are featured throughout the publication. According to the company’s experts, the focus on gemstones remains and a renewed interest in traditional coloured stones such as rubies, sapphires and emeralds has generated creative expression and excitement. Swarovski Gems’ style gurus have narrowed the Gem Visions 2014 trends into four categories: Allegoria, Cross Gender, Minimal East and Eldorado Remix. Allegoria provokes the dark arts and mysticism. Cross Gender instigates a craze for pink, whereas, contrastingly Minimal East is Zen-driven. Eldorado Remix pushes for ethnic influences as it celebrates a new golden age.
TRENDS BOOK / 21
TRAVEL THE THEMES
ALLEGORIA This is the most daring trend of 2014. Stemming from the word allegory, which is defined as “a representation of an abstract or spiritual meaning through concrete or material forms, Allegoria is symbolic, ritualistic and sacred. The theme has a soul that conjures medieval and mythical spirits. The jewellery is allusive and sculptural with intricate details. Constructed around the beauty of geometry and primitive instincts, this collection encompasses ancient philosophies. Contrastingly, the colours of stones used represent a modern sense, moving away from the gothic era. The palette includes, intense rust, fiery flame, shocking ultramarine blue and off white.
TRENDS BOOK / 22
CROSS GENDER Cross Gender reflects the ever-changing, multifaceted and complex moods of today’s consumerism. It explores the resistance of stereotypes and mixes them to challenge conventions. Modern youth and its exciting energy fuel this trend. Cross Gender focuses on surrealism, ludicrous fantasy and the imagination of alternative universes. The trend concentrates on gender fusion and futuristic visions and expectations. Centered on strong pinks, Cross Gender also incorporates acid yellows, pale blues and pure whites.
TRENDS BOOK / 23
MINIMAL EAST The influence of Asia is the target for the contemporary, Zen-like trend of Minimal East. Asia’s preoccupation with ancient crafts and innovative technology drives this neo-minimalist trend. It is contemplative and re-examines the cultural roots of today’s rapidly transforming world. Using soft, subtle tones such as grey-green, borealis greys, fresh jade greens and a startling hint of Chinese lacquer red, this trend direction is sophisticated and meticulous in style.
TRENDS BOOK / 24
ELDORADO REMIX Uniting two southern countries, Brazil and South Africa, this trend links the modernity of Brazil and the African pride of South Africa. Vibrant, rich, tribal and spirited, Eldorado Remix meets and mingles tradition with contemporary ideals. This trend celebrates the global stage by embracing African inspirations and mixing them with Brazilian styles and techniques. Drawing on sculpture from ancient civilisations, and using provocative colours such as amethyst, turquoise, ruby and coral, these gemstones are mixed with earthy tones of brown and deep and bright green.

JEWELRY: THE BEST WAYS TO SHOW OFF BLING Whether fancy or costume, nothing can add oomph to your wardrobe like jewelry. Here are our tips for making sure your bling always looks its best.
Enhance Your Style with Jewelry There is nothing that brings a smile to our face like a pretty ring, a jangly necklace, or some sparkly earrings. Big or small, real or fake, understated or over-the-top, jewelry lifts the spirits. It also lifts a look. Colorful beads or chandelier earrings could be just the thing to make an ordinary outfit outstanding. Read on for tips on how to best use jewelry to your fashion advantage.
TRENDS BOOK / 26
Show Your Style Spirit While jewelry is a very personal thing — gifts from your significant other, family heirlooms, purchases to mark milestones — it can also be a reflection of your style spirit. Some people can't go out of the house without loading up necklaces, while for others simple studs will do. Some women prefer an armful of bangles, and some load up on brooches. No matter your preference, bits of baubles are all about adding joy to your look — so don't stress, have fun with it.
TRENDS BOOK / 27
Keep It Chic and Cheap Keep it chic. In some instances, loading up on the sparklies is an exciting way to accent. But know when to stop. An armful of bangles, for example, means you should think minimal with your necklaces and earrings.
Tone it down when your clothes have a lot going on. A ruffle-front blouse can look sweet with a thin chain in the mix, but not with a big, ornate number.
You don't have to spend a lot on your baubles. Costume jewelry adds pizzazz. Beware of anything too cheap,
TRENDS BOOK / 28
Bring Life to Outfits with Necklaces There are so many directions you can go when it comes to necklaces, from subtle (a simple gold chain or a strand of pearls) to bold (a wide bib or colorful beads) and lots of places in between.
TRENDS BOOK / 29
Five Necklace-Wearing Guidelines Layer up! A mix of necklaces in varied shapes and lengths can look festive. Stop at a few strands. You don't want to look weighed down. A wide choker or bib demands attention and should be your sole statement maker. Forgo other jewelry when wearing such a fetching item. An open neckline on your top highlights your glitzy accent. The same goes for a solid-color shirt. A draping necklace is lovely with a long frock. Choose a shorter strand with higher hemlines. Consider the vibe you are going for. Add colorful beads for a boho feel, silver chains for a touch of punk, or pearls for a prim and proper air.
TRENDS BOOK / 30
Face-Framing with Earrings Whether you prefer simple studs every day or dangly drops, earrings have a big impact on your outfit. Yes, they are relatively small, but they are in the direct line of vision of anyone you talk to, so they should be well considered.
Earrings 3 Ways Small studs are perfect if you like a tad of glitz and don't change them every day. Diamonds are the ultimate and go with everything, but pearls or gold or silver studs are just as versatile. Chandelier earrings draw attention. Keep your accoutrements limited to these stunners; pass on a necklace, brooch, or bangles. Dainty drop earrings are the middle ground between petite studs and major danglies. They also offer a way to work color into your look.
TRENDS BOOK / 31
Up the Glam Factor with Rings You don't have to have a major rock to indulge in an eye-catching ring. From classic gold bands to exotic stones, there are styles to suit all tastes and budgets. Use rings to make an even bigger statement every time you talk with your hands.
Four Ways to Wear Rings A gob-stopper-size ring is the ideal partner for your cocktail frock. Try one for day, too, when you're wearing basics. Stack your rings (like these from Ipppolita) for a funky edge. To properly layer, choose ones that have flat edges or single stones and can be twisted to fit on top of each other. Don't load up every finger. One adorned digit per hand looks best (especially with cocktail pieces), but max out at two each if you like to wear multiples. When wearing an attention-getting ring, keep in mind people will look — which means your nails should be properly groomed.
TRENDS BOOK / 32
Accent Your Arms Bracelets can be exotic, simple, or just exciting. They're all about adding extra oomph. Whether you stack them, opt for one wide cuff, or pick one filled with trinkets, they give your style personality.
How to Make Bracelets Stand Out Try loading up on an armful. Stacked bangles — especially gold pieces of varying sizes (like this chain bracelet from Ann Taylor Loft) -— put a worldly spin on your style. Add a watch into the mix, but don't go so far that you are jangling everywhere you go. Mixing material can look rich when wearing multiple bracelets, but keep it limited to one or two types. Lots of bracelets calls for bare wrists. Wear short sleeves or roll up long ones to display your bijoux. One wide cuff makes an impression. So, leave the rest of your look toned down. Cuffs can easily slide over a long-sleeved knit. It’s a chic way to wear them.
TRENDS BOOK / 33
Brooches: Old-Fashioned Sparkles You may think brooches are an outdated, fuddy-duddy take on jewelry, but a glamorous pin can enrich and enliven the most basic of clothes — and there are even edgy options like this tarantula brooch from Giorgio Armani.
Four Ideas for Brooches Pin them on your masculine pieces, like blazers and button-ups, for a feminine flair. Smaller styles look interesting when worn in groups. Choose pieces from similar genres — all deco, for example. Expand beyond diamonds. Pins are chic in unique styles, like rosettes and ribbons. Put them on in unusual places. A brooch doesn't have to be stuck on your lapel. Try one on the hip of your dress, to fasten your scarf, or as a closure for your cardigan.

TRENDS// FOOTWEAR - A/W 2014-15 Trends where you can view the entire report here. Their trends are inspired by 4 concepts: The Greatest Explorer's Club, In The Balance, Indie On The Hudson and La Zingara.
THE GREATEST EXPLORER'S CLUB The economic model based on selfish over-consumption seems to be wavering and taking a page from our great grandfather’s diary, we are steeped in the lore of his conquests and surrounded by the souvenirs of his success. He had an adventurous life: an archeologist, an intellectual and a true gentleman. I want to be an explorer too! This has a 1920’s Great Gatsby spirit with tweeds, hunting jackets, argyles and tartans. We look to the Golden Age of tycoons, movie stars and Industrialists when over the top interpretation of European styling was all the rage. New wealth looked to great estates like Versailles to design the first mansions replete with dark mahogany wood, gold leaf, Italian marble and crystal chandeliers.

IN THE BALANCE We strive to prove the theory that simplicity is the antidote for turbulence. Don’t call this minimalism, as this is about purity and a departure from fakery and gratuitous embellishment. It’s a concept that focuses on living on simplicity, friendship and comfort. Selfridges in London offers a refuge for overwrought shoppers – a “no noise room” where all products are completely devoid of logos and call outs. We streamline our lives to create more space to think and just ‘be’. There is a subtle sense of humor in the trend with color pops and offbeat angles.

An air of enchantment infuses the season. Do you want to be rich? Do you want to be beautiful? What if your heart’s desire? In a worldwide context of fast and furious mutation, where aesthetic desires are too often translated in hasty, ill-assorted choices – the need to give meaning to beauty is a strong one. This new perception invites us to explore History, taking inspiration from the splendors of other ages and their application of golden rules. Within 10 years, 25 emerging countries will have twice as many households disposing of yearly revenue of over $30,000. These new middle classes will demand more embellishment in everyday life. “Looking rich” and blingy things are no longer enough and in developed countries where consumers find that sketchy aesthetics are not very inspiring. It is the use of classical artistic codes from the past that inspires us. La Zingara refers to gypsy styles with ornate brocade, priceless jewels and sumptuous velvets.

Silence

Oxidised
The brown copper and rust family develops strongly in combinations with amazing surface & yarn treatments. It is part of the ongoing fascination of artisanal and crafted elements and a counterbalance of the technical invasions in our lifestyles. This section is not without difficulty because it calls for reflection and forward thinking on how to use and merchandise these colours. The danger of “heavyness needs to be avoided even when an element of roughness is introduced. Combinations with metallic or shiny accents and tonal multi-color add movement and delicacy. This is also a major direction for novelty animal designs.

Imagine...a night sky without light pollution, voluptuous, dark, mysterious.
