the novel coronavirus Covid-19 global pandemic. Amidst disrupted markets, changes in cashflow and higher compliance costs, farmers have rallied to stay afloat and keep producing food for our nation and export markets. The resilience of South Africa’s farming sector has been consistently proven and now more than ever the industry is showing its mettle. The crisis has also placed a much-deserved spotlight on farmers and the role they play in ensuring food security. South Africa has realised its fortunate position to be a food secure country, with minimal reliance on imported food. As our farmers continue their operations despite some restrictions as a result of the lockdown, opportunities are presenting themselves in many forms. With a renewed focus on health and strong immune systems, consumers will be more vigilant as to how they are feeding their families. This presents renewed prospects for farmers who cultivate food without harmful chemicals, synthetic fertilisers, hormones or antibiotics.
This is no easy feat and farmers that strive towards these goals have their work cut out for them. But with the increasing demand for safe, chemical free food, the market is rewarding. With an estimated worth of around R200 million and counting, the South Africa organic market is growing in popularity with both farmers and consumers. Organic farmers are able to capitalise on increasing opportunities for market access as consumers start giving more thought to the food they eat. Taking full advantage of these opportunities will require farmers to remain on the forefront of new technologies and solutions to optimise production to beat the ever-encroaching cost price squeeze. Those who are connected to a diversity of markets and suppliers stand a better chance to thrive. It is especially important within the organic sector to make use of reliable inputs that will contribute to the integrity of the crop. Presented within this directory is a vast variety of input suppliers and potential partners for

Organic Agriculture in Africa: Some thoughts in 2020 Corona virus, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, autism, climate refugees, the list goes on! More positively, the Heads of State of the African Union have agreed that Ecological Organic Agriculture (EOA) should be part of Africa’s move towards food sovereignty and climate resilience. They have assessed all African countries in terms of their progress towards EOA, and will require all countries to report every two years on progress towards climate resilient farming. Education of school children and mothers concerning healthy food choices, good food preparation and food gardens for health is now a major priority for many governments. Countries such as Morocco, Tunisia and Uganda were assessed as “Advanced EOA countries, while South Africa and many others still receive no government assistance for organic farming, and little education about the dangers of empty calories, hidden salt, sugars and trans fats, and junk foods, not to mention agro-chemical residues in food and the denaturing of many food crops during processing. If we are to build organic food systems in South Africa, we need aware consumers, ethical traders and processors, organised and efficient farmers who understand ecological principles, and some form of quality management to assure consumers that what they are buying really was produced and processed with respect, intelligence and spiritual awareness! This directory aims to give useful information to all members of the South African Food System who are discerning enough to search for quality and sustainability in their food choices. We hope and trust that you will find it useful! SAOSO Steering Committee

The Bread Gypsy
Plot 95, Zeekoegat, Pretoria Contact Pauli | pauli@thebreadgypsy.co.za
At The Bread Gypsy, we are passionate about making bread the way mother nature intended – with just flour, water, wild yeast and salt. We use only stoneground flour, which has been mindfully milled. Why? Because stone-ground flour contains all the inherent goodness of the wheat grain and is devoid of harmful chemicals, flour conditioners and preservatives. We hand craft a variety of rustic and robust artisan style breads, all of which are baked in wood-fired ovens, which serves to bring out the
best flavour and texture in the bread. Many of our breads undergo a protracted fermentation period, which gives the gluten proteins time to break down, making the bread more readily digestible and also far more flavourful. Our bread and pastries are available at The Lucky Bread Company’s at the Brooklyn Mall and The Mall of Africa, and Jackson’s Whole Food Market. We also trade at The Boeremark and Hazelwood Food Market every Saturday.

Debora’s Plaashoenders or farm chickens offer an organic and unique chicken, that tastes the way chicken should. We pay special attention to each flock optimizing the chicks growth for the best quality while maintaining an organic, free range approach. Our chickens are grown for 8-9 weeks as opposed to the commercial 6 week period. This is because we make our own fermented feed that incorporates organic raw ingredients, no added growth hormones and a variety of herbs to naturally aid each chicks wellbeing as no antibiotics are used in any of our flocks. Currently our chickens are living the best life since we have incorporated the tractor system, as well as limiting our chicks per square meter to at least half the recommended amount. This is to keep the chicks in the most natural habitat with sufficient space while giving them the opportunity to eat bugs and soak up sunlight as they naturally would. These are all only facts, with the invitation to taste the difference yourself.

The lavandin essential oil extract is done by using a special distillation technique to specifically produce the essential oil with Lavandula abrialis that is strictly grown organically and handpicked. Due to the medicinal and cosmeceutical benefits of lavandin essential oil, organic essential oil processing has become of great interest to our business. These benefits include treating anxiety, insomnia as well as having anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Lavandin essential
oil is, hence, used extensively in aromatherapy and purchased by many to use as a natural sleep aid. However, our pure and highly concentrated lavandin essential oil cannot be applied directly onto one’s skin, nor should it be ingested. Safe and usable methods of appreciating lavandin essential oil include adding a drop of oil to water, carrier oils, or an unscented lotion or liquid soap. Additionally, one may also opt to use the oil with a diffuser to compliment one’s space with a soothing camphor fragrance. SPECIALISED SERVICES & PRODUCTS

Organic FACT The nutrient density (amount of nutrient per kg of total food product) has declined by 15% in 44 different garden vegetables over the past sixty years; protein in grains has also declined. Nutrient levels in organic foods (provided that they have not been excessively processed or de-natured) are usually higher than industrially produced foods, as many peer-reviewed studies show. Organic food systems support the local economy where they are produced, and they are often part of community supported agriculture or co-operative food production.

Organic FACT The cost of assisting African farmers with “Green revolution” technologies (including the new AGRA approach (Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa) works out at about US$120 per farm per year; helping organic farmers costs about US$ 2 per farm per year. While AGRA gives away chemical fertilisers, poisons and genetically modified seeds, the Export Programme for Organic Products from Africa (EPOPA) linked farmers to markets, developed local training capacity and helped farmers to use local resources. The African Union (AU) has started an “Ecological Organic Agriculture Initiative” (EOA-I) which is helping African farmers to develop capacity and to manage crop quality and animal welfare. AU acknowledges that African organic farmers have not been supported.

10 Reasons
to grow & eat organic foods • To Protect Future Generations
• To Protect Farm Workers Health
Our inheritors the children are exposed to at least 8 widely used cancer-causing pesticides in foods which is 4 times as high as when their parents were children. Today’s food choices impact on your child’s future health this impact comes from the choices you make today.
Research shows farmers exposed to herbicides are 6 times more likely to contract cancers. About 1 million people in developing countries are poisoned annually because of unregulated pesticides. A lot of these chemicals are banned in developed nations.
• To Prevent Soil Erosion
• To Help Small Farmers
African soils are under constant threat of erosion by wind and water. Organic farming promotes and uses composting, mulching, green manure crops and other conservation practices that keep soil in place.
By their nature, most organic farms are familyoperated economically sustainable units. Large numbers of small viable farms will build much more dynamic human-based rural communities than a few, capital-intensive corporate farms because of better use of human and natural resources. Managers look after the ‘bottom line. Owner-operators look after the biological and social community which is their future.
• To Protect Water Quality Water is central to the continuing and quality of life and is particularly relevant in our country at this time. Organic farming methods protect ground water by avoiding the use of leachable toxic chemicals, nitrates and phosphates. With increased organic matter content of organic soils the infiltration rate and volume is increased. • To Save Energy Agriculture uses energy in operating farm machinery and in producing synthetic fertilizers. Organic farming tends to replace fossil fuels with human energy, creating jobs rather than pollution. Organic produce also tends to travel shorter distances from field to table. • To Keep Chemicals Off Your Plate Pesticides are poisons designed to kill living organisms and can be harmful to humans. The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates 60% of herbicides, 90% of fungicides and 30% of insecticides are carcinogenic. Pesticides are implicated in birth defects, nerve damage and genetic mutation. Organic and biological agriculture work with nature. 36 | SAOSO Essentials Handbook | Issue 1 2020
• To Support a ‘True’ Economy Organic foods may seem expensive. The lower shop prices of non-organic products does not include ‘hidden’ costs like pesticide regulation and testing, hazardous waste disposal and cleanor repairing damaged environments & human health. • To Promote Biodiversity Monocropping destroys soil structure, depletes soil fertility and increases pesticide reliance. Organic agriculture relies heavily on crop rotation, ensuring more natural micro environments as habitats for insect predators and birds as well as protecting soil health. • To Enjoy Better flavour & Nutrition The proof is in the eating! In addition to optimum nutrition and great flavour through natural growing methods, organic / biological foods are chemical-free tasty, nutritious and safe.

Organic FACT Phosphate is an essential nutrient needed by almost all food plants; if phosphate is in a plant-available form, it helps roots to grow and improves photosynthesis. Organic farmers can apply rock phosphate (which is simply a ground up, phosphate rich, rock, often derived from old sea beds, which also have calcium). Once the soil-available phosphate has been built up to about 20-30 mg/kg, you should not need to add more rock phosphate to the soil. Good quality compost and crop rotation is all you need for soil fertility once the available phosphate levels have been raised.

Organic FACT Organic farming and organic processing avoid the use of almost all poisons. Although chemical farming claims that the poisons they use are safe, there is ample scientific evidence that agricultural poisons cause many deaths globally. Some deaths are caused by agricultural workers being exposed to poisons while spraying crops, and others are caused when poisons are not used according to the regulations, and the residues from spraying remain on food products.

Requirements for Organic Crop Production 1. What organic agriculture is: • Avoids synthetic pesticides, easily soluble mineral fertilizers and genetically modified organisms (GMO) • Protects the environment and promotes biodiversity • Produces healthy food and recycles nutrients • Uses locally adapted methods. 2. Soil fertility and plant nutrition: • Soil fertility has to be conserved or improved • Soil erosion must be avoided • For annual crops, a wide crop rotation has to be used, including legumes to assure biological nitrogen fixation • For perennial crops, wherever possible, legumes have to be planted in interrow spaces • Organic manuring should be used. 3. Crop protection: • Synthetical herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides are not allowed • Pests and plant diseases must be prevented, using adapted species and resistant varieties, adequate crop rotations and promoting natural enemies
•
•
After having taken these measures, only natural or mineral substances mentioned in organic regulations may be used Weeds must be controlled by mechanical or thermal means, through adequate soil tillage and crop rotation. SPECIALISED SERVICES & PRODUCTS

Langplaas Organics is a biological, agricultural company that specialize in organic fertilizers and biological solutions to soil health. The emphasis is on raising carbon levels in soil and brix levels in plants to ensure sustainability for generations to come. The pioneering work was done on Langplaas, a family concern, situated in the Brits area. The farm is a large commercial vegetable supplier to major retailers, local and abroad, making quality and healthy food a big priority. New, regenerative farming methods caused a reduction in chemical fertilizers by up to 60% and chemicals by up to 80%. With the introduction of Humates, Fulvates, cocktails of biological organisms and
cover crops, carbon levels in the soils were raised from 1% to 4% in just a few years. A significant increase in water retention was one of the results, as well as a notable increase in yield, quality and shelf life. SPECIALISED SERVICES & PRODUCTS

Vitasoil is 100% organic as approved by Ecocert certification. VitaSoil is a high carbon content formulation inoculated with a diverse range of beneficial microbes. The carbon sources used in this formulation is equally divided between “active” or microbial digestible and “stable” or non-digestible forms of carbon. VitaSoil helps to restore the biological balance in the soil, recolonizing the micro- organisms that replenish and recycle essential elements vital to plant growth. It is a unique blend of living microorganisms, carbon, organic acids and micro-
nutrients that brings soil to life. VitaSoil is therefore an ideal product to not only improve the impoverished carbon levels of “over worked” soils, but will also aid in restoring the natural microbial balance of the soil. SPECIALISED SERVICES & PRODUCTS

Organic FACT Making and applying good quality compost will raise the soil’s pH (and so reduce the level of acidity). It can also neutralise toxic aluminium or iron oxides which inhibit phosphate availability. Good compost will raise the soil organic matter level, adding carbon in a useful and biologically active form. Compost will not increase the phosphate in the soil.

How to go organic on a budget With the farm to table movement already growing and more people generally interested in knowing what is in their food, many people are choosing to go the organic route. Organic foods are free of chemicals, pesticides and other toxins and are also high in nutrients. If you are one of the people who choose to go organic you have to be aware of how the food is grown and by extension, exactly what you are putting in body. As more people go organic, they soon realise how expensive it is and some become discouraged, which then begs one to question if it is possible to go organic on a budget. Reacting to the above question, Lephoto, a Qwa-Qwa, Free State based entrepreneur said organic food is expensive because businesses have figured out a way to raise prices and create hype around the brand of organic food. “This is hype that really should not exist and high prices that really should not be charged. But capitalists are prying on people’s gullibility.” He added by saying there is, unfortunately, a cost to growing food organically since one as to acquire the land, infrastructure and knowledge to do it. But one can start small and work over time to build over that foundation. He said if you really need the best organic foods and to save up a little, you have to know what to look for, what to do and not what to do.
Lephoto’s do’s and don’ts of going organic. •
Make use of the little you have: It should not be costly to go organic, most of the stuff you need is found at dumpsites. Go there and see what discarded items can you up-cycle.
•
Learn weather patterns and how that affects growing foods: Learn which vegetables grow well in summer and which ones grow in winter.
•
Don’t cut corners. Nature takes its time. Obey its rules and practice patience.
•
Never be tempted to reap the rewards immediately. Allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them. Eventually you will get it right.

All of our products are as effective as other cleaning products, but provide peace of mind to the eco-conscious user. There is so much to worry about in this world; at least what the chemicals in your household cleaners are doing to the earth is no longer one of them.

PTH Water Conditioner
PO Box 451, Kleinmond 7195 Contact Tom de Gale | 076 036 2340 | pthwater@gmail.com
Achieve real water quality even in the hardest, scale-heavy, brack-water regions of South Africa... that is eco-friendly... that is good for you and your family, your plants/crops and your property/industry - at a remarkably low, onceoff life-time cost. The Israeli PTH is an in-line s/steel cylinder with a revolutionary 12-noble metal alloy core. As the water passes through, harmful minerals and salts are neutralised, preventing lime scale, rust and corrosion. With salty, brack water the sodium is ‘relaxed’ from the chloride for sweet irrigation water. Smaller particles allow faster soil penetration, cleansing the soil to beyond the root zone.
Saves up to 40% evaporation. Growth and yields improve. No power, no chemicals required. Keeps on working. 100% environmentally friendly.
