RECTOR’S GREETINGS Sapientia is a Latin word meaning wisdom, discernment and the sage application of knowledge. Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania is an independent university of the Hungarians in Romania, aiming at educating members belonging to this community as well as carrying out high-level scientific research. The University is responsible for the knowledge provided to students, the future of its academic faculty, the quality of their research and transparency in functioning. The institution came into being with the support of the Hungarian State in 2001, and today it functions in four cities: Miercurea Ciuc (Csíkszereda), Târgu-Mureș (Marosvásárhely), Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár) and Sfântu

Gheorghe (Sepsiszentgyörgy). Although these are four different educational locations, they form a unitary university structure. The University is striving to guide its community towards proximity to the citizen, Christian charity, equity, consistency and righteousness. Among its fundamental expectations are ethical conduct, knowledge and respect for Hungarian and universal cultural values. University life is vigorously marked by attendance and the practice of institutional autonomy. Dr László Dávid rector of Sapientia EMTE

THE MISSION OF THE UNIVERSITY Endorsing Christian and universal human values; Assuring competitive and quality-oriented education and research, continuing the traditions of the Transylvanian Hungarian education; Transparent and consistent university functioning, endorsing values of professionalism and academic spirit; Creating an adequate and modern organization, serving regional needs as well in a unified institutional framework; Building comprehensive relations based on mutual openness, trust and devotion towards partners.

SAPIENTIA FOUNDATION The Government of Hungary funds the Transylvanian Hungarian network of private universities (the Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania and the Partium Christian University) through the Sapientia Foundation, established by the historic Hungarian churches of Transylvania. Today, as a direct result of the supervision of the historic churches, the Foundation is one of the minority organizations with the widest possible social legitimacy.

The Sapientia Foundation was created by the Roman Catholic, Reformed, Unitarian and Evangelical-Lutheran churches in Transylvania in March 2000. The Board of the Foundation is appointed by the founding churches; their task is to define and carry into effect the objectives of the Foundation aiming to support Hungarian-language higher education in Romania. The Board is composed of twelve members, including leaders of Hungarian companies and the representative of the Hungarian Government in addition to the experts representing the churches. The objectives of the Foundation, as set forth in its Statutes are the support and the development of culture, education and science by the establishment and financing of a privately owned higher education institution, with Hungarian tuition language. The Board of the Foundation has the right to decide, among other things, on the development strategy of the University, its budget and financial policies, as well as the adoption and amendment of its Charter.

CSÍKSZEREDA MIERCUREA CIUC Miercurea Ciuc (Csíkszereda) lies in the central part of the Ciuc Basin enclosed by the volcanic mountain ranges of Harghita and Ciuc in the eastern part of Transylvania. The first chartered document about the market town dates from 5th August 1558 and was issued by the Queen consort of Hungary, Isabella Jagiellon. The settlement came into being at the crossroads of major roads as a marketplace on Wednesdays – hence the name (Szereda – Wednesday). Traditionally, Miercurea Ciuc and its neighbouring area are considered to be one of the citadels of Roman Catholic religion in Transylvania. A Franciscan school opened its gates in 1630 in Șumuleu Ciuc, in the immediate neighbourhood of Miercurea Ciuc, and then Johannes Caioni’s famous printing-press started to function here in 1676. The Mikó Castle, the oldest architectural sight is one of the main landmarks of Miercurea Ciuc. Its name derives from Count Ferenc Hídvégi Mikó, the chronicler and counselor of Gabriel Bethlen, Prince of Transylvania (1613–1629). It has been the home of the Szekler Museum of Ciuc since 1970. One of the most beautiful and impressive buildings of the town is the high school bearing the name of Áron Márton, bishop of the Roman Catholic Church in Transylvania (1938– 1980). The Segítő Mária (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) Roman Catholic High School also functions here.

KOLOZSVÁR CLUJ-NAPOCA Cluj-Napoca is the centre of Transylvania and its most important city, the birthplace of Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus and of Stephen Bocskai, Prince of Transylvania (1605–1606). The cradle of Unitarian religion, the town today is the second most populous city in Romania, following the capital city. Its nickname, “Treasure City”, dates from the late 16th century, referring to its wealth in the Middle Ages. Abounding in monuments, we only mention St. Michael’s Church in the Union Square, the statue of King Matthias Corvinus (sculpted by János Fadrusz) next to the church, the Reformed Church (21 Mihail Kogălniceanu Street) and the Bánffy Palace. The vibrant cultural and scientific life of the city act as a magnet to thousands of Transylvanian Hungarian students, while the international theatre and film festivals, book fairs, operas and concerts regularly see outstanding figures from the cultural life of the entire Europe. The end of August marks the celebration of Hungarian culture in Cluj-Napoca. Over the years, the Hungarian Days (Kolozsvári Magyar Napok) have grown into one of the largest cultural parades in the Carpathian Basin. This series of events celebrated the 700th birthday of the city in 2016, as King Charles I of Hungary returned the settlement its old privileges, extended them, and gave it municipal standing on 19th August 1316.

MAROSVÁ SÁRHELY TÂRGU MUREȘ The first written record of Târgu Mureș dates from 1323 as Novum Forum Siculorum. The name refers to a marketplace, which is connected to the settlement of the Szeklers in the Mureș area. Important figures connected to the development of the settlement are King Matthias Corvinus, Stephen Báthory (Prince of Transylvania, 1576–1586), Isabella Jagiellon, the Queen consort of Hungary. Gabriel Bethlen (Prince of Transylvania, 1613–1629) gave its municipal standing in 1616. The style of the sixth largest town in Transylvania is defined by Art Nouveau houses and public buildings, remarkably the Administrative Palace (Prefecture) and the Palace of

Culture. The main attractions of the city are the Rose Square, the Saint John the Baptist Church, the famous tower of the Franciscans in the town centre, the Fortress with bastions and the Fortress Church. Thanks to the National Theatre, the Teleki Library and other public libraries, its museums and art gallery exhibitions, the town is considered to be Szeklerland’s cultural centre. The Târgu Mureș State Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the most reputable ones in Transylvania. The International Book Fair, the Alternative Film Festival, or the Târgu Mureș Whirl (Vásárhelyi Forgatag) organised each year all contribute to the image of Târgu Mureș as a university town.

FACULTY IN TÂRGU MUREȘ The need for Hungarian technical education was explicitly clarified in 1990, when almost 100,000 people called for an autonomous Hungarian university in the town centre. In addition to existing public universities, the Sapientia University opened its gates in Târgu Mureş in 2001, with its Faculty of Technical and Human Sciences. The Faculty is the most important centre of technical and agricultural sciences in Hungarian, offering a unique opportunity in Romania in eight engineering study programmes in Hungarian.

To answer the challenges of modern education, the Campus has three amphitheatres, ten lecture rooms and forty-five well-equipped labs to serve the theoretical and practical instruction of students. The cafeteria and the canteen offer various refreshments and a menu of the day. The 27-hectare area around the central building is an ideal spot for students of horticulture and landscape architecture to carry out their professional training.
