Mandook Dasa By U. K. Jha, India. Readership Level: Very Advanced
1.0 Preamble There are various types of Dasa systems discussed in the standard classical texts of astrology. Few Dasa systems as has been elaborated elsewhere by the scribe have been found in vogue but are not found in the standard texts. Mandook Dasa has been dealt in BPHS but it is decidedly a Jaimini Dasa (Chapter 2, Quarter-IV, Sutra no.15). Although Jaimini Upadesh Sutra provides most fascinating ground of study for intelligent astrologers, it has its own drawbacks. While on one hand this text contains marvellous techniques of prediction on the other hand its contents are replete with bundle of confusing descriptions. Commentators of Samskrit learning have consumed most of their talent in tearing apart the words than taking a dip into the real spirit of these sutras. Many sutras seem to be grossly misplaced; whereas, many words used in these sutras have multifarious interpretations. Its antiquity has posed an intractable trouble even to the ancient commentators. No one knows what was the actual form of this text, and some of its sutras remained a riddle for astrologers of all the ages. The sutra appertained to Mandook Dasa is no exception to the same. In the opinion of one commentator this is Niryan Shoola Dasa which is also called Mandook Dasa as the operating signs in this Dasa jumps and he has taken the jump

of two houses (signs) instead of one. Since the sutras of Jaimini are extremely brief and devoid of any hint or further details commentators have gone their own way to explain the things. For example, Mandook Dasa is generally being prepared as per the suggestions made in other Karikas (commentaries). However; the problem is that the motion of Mandook as stated in BPHS while dealing with Kalachakra Dasa is not being followed in the suggestions made by various ancient or modern authorities. Utplutya Gamanam Vijna Mandookam Prachkshate - Movement of sign by jumping over another sign is known as Mandook Gati (motion) and it is explained there with example also. For instance; movement from Virgo to Cancer or from Leo to Gemini is Mandook motion. Unfortunately, the modern savants have also failed to take note of this starkly clear discrepancy. Is it; therefore, not extremely essential to first fix the sequence of operating Dasa signs strictly as per the Mandook Gati (motion) before doing anything else in working out this Dasa system?
2.0 View of BPHS Let us see what BPHS says in respect of Mandook Dasa. Mandookaparparyaya Trikootakhyadasa Dwija Lagnasaptamyormadhye Yo Rasirbalvaan Bhavet Tatah Kramenajaurashyau Sameneya Tathotkramat Trikootanam Cha Vijneyah Sthirachcha Dasa Samah. One may note here the word Trikoot has been used verbatim in reference to Jaimini Sutra (without any synonymous word or explanation) and the Dasa is said to be akin to Sthira Dasa. None knows this similarity with Sthira Dasa is upto what extent and in what fashion. It is certainly not the same or exactly; for, the commencement of Dasa has been suggested here in different way; whereas, Jaimini is silent in this respect; so far the duration of Dasa is concerned. Hence; the exact connotation of the term Trikoot needs to be explored rationally. What does the term Trikoot imply in this context has not been elaborated and all that we find in different commentaries are the works of the commentators borrowed from elsewhere. None knows where the meaning of Trikoota as Kendra, Panphar and Apoklim came from. Trikoot implying three (peaks) have been implied here in terms of Kendra, Panphar and Apoklim houses or moveable (chara), fixed (shtira) and mutable (dwiswabhava) signs. But why? We have no specious reason for drawing such conclusions except for few samskrit shlokas that does not stand the logical analysis. Further, why the Dasa should start with the sign stronger between Lagna and 7th house? Jaimini does not make any such suggestion. It only says that this Dasa would always start with some odd sign (Sthulaadarsha Vaishyashrio). How to use the Adrash sign in this respect is not clear if the Dasa would commence with the stronger between the signs identical with Lagna and the 7th house. Modern scholars have again failed to take note of this suggestion. Obviously, BPHS does not go by the injunctions of the Jaimini sutra. Can't we say that Parasara Karika (BPHS) is wrought with some missing link here? None of the scholars have given a thought as to why the course of movement of sign that signifies it as Mandook Dasa should change in this case? This includes even those scholars 2
425
who claim vociferously to have done great and extensive research in Jaimini Dasa systems. Same authority (BPHS) can not be expected to change the definition of Mandook motion. More important; therefore, is to maintain the motion of the frog (Mandook) first in operation of Dasa sequence than to hunt for the term Trikoot and land on some erroneous platform to proceed further with.
3.0 Motion Of Mandook (Frog) The confusion seems to be emanating from the wrong interpretation of the term Trikoot used in sutra no. 15 chapter II quarter IV of Jaimini Upadesha Sutra which has been used verbatim in BPHS and other Karikas. The argument generally given is that Trikoot signifies three types of signs viz moveable, fixed and dual or Kendra, Panphar and Apoklim. This logic however does not seem to be very sound; albeit, all the ancient and modern scholars have subscribed to this view. But it is this explanation that changes the motion of Mandook and creates a difference with the definition given in case of Kalachakra Dasa. Scholars seem to be so much seized by this definition of Trikoot that some prefer the angular jump while others go by the trinal jump of the signs in an attempt of deciding the order of succession in Dasa pattern. And this twists the Mandook motion for jump of the signs. Since the Dasa is named as Mandook Dasa it ought to follow the Mandook motion (Gati) as given by BPHS and in that case neither the angular nor the trinal jump of signs i.e. a jump of two or three signs can be accepted because it completely offsets the Dasa from its suggested root (name). As such, the term Trikoot has got to be viewed in a different way setting aside the suggestions made by ancient authorities. Can the word Trikoot meaning three not signify the structure made in space while jumping in tri-ekadasa format that is from Gemini to Leo or to Aries in forward or backward direction? After all, the jump of only one house/sign is permitted as per definition of Mandook Gati (motion). If this motion is accepted then movement of frog (Mandook) becomes identical with Kalachakra Dasa as given in BPHS. It is quite surprising as to why scholars have not followed this simple track and tried to create a difference in definition of Mandook Gati perforce? Once the motion of Mandook is fixed independently as per the given definition, attention to find out the implication of the term Trikoot would automatically get focussed to the right connotation.
4.0 Noticeable Flaw In Dasa and the Term Trikoot There is a major flaw in application of prevalent suggestion of Dasa (Mandook) periods. In this case all the three types of signs operate one after the other and have same duration for four consecutive main periods and then it is changed to other Dasa duration. For example, if in a chart Dasa commences with a moveable sign then first four Dasa of moveable sign shall have a period of 7 years each i.e. 28 years in total. It would then be followed by four Dasa of fixed signs having a period of 8 years for each sign i.e. total 32 years. Lastly it would be of 36 years for four dual signs each having a period of 9 years. This is queer and does not seem to be rational. So, the suggestions made by the ancient authorities in this respect needs to be reexamined. Few savants who have obviously noticed this discrepancy have opted to pick up the trinal motion in which case the Dasa periods of moveable, fixed and mutable signs would alternate 3
426
themselves in sequential manner. But this has given a jump of three houses/signs which again does not befit the definition of Mandook Gati. Here again the wrong definition of the term Trikoot can be found at the bottom of the discrepancy. Since the available definition of the term Trikoot is offsetting the Mandook Gati of the Dasa sequence this definition has got to be dropped and mind has to applied afresh to investigate the correct connotation of the term Trikoot. The scribe has pondered over the suggestions made by the ancient authorities in depth and tried the various possibilities in this respect on several charts. Since the flaw appears to be engrained in the suggestion, the solution must be somewhere around the same. The situation that leads us to wrong path also conceals the hints for proceeding in right direction. The suggestion about its some link with Sthira Dasa can not be completely ignored. The term Trikoot also gives hint towards the three peaks. In scriptures we find the term Trikoot Parvat (mountain or hill having three peaks) Thus, it can be easily presumed that the Mandook Dasa of Jaimini can have three peaks. The concept of Kendra, Panphar and Apoklim or Chara, Sthira and Dwiswabhava has also been taken to reach to the same point but have given different motion to the Mandook on account of its wrong application. Every Dasa system (except for those where operating period is computed in terms of the lord from the sign) has a fixed period of duration. But Mandook Dasa does not have one fixed period of duration. Rather it has three fixed periods (Trikoot) of duration and that needs to be calculated on the basis of Dasa duration given in Sthira Dasa for moveable, fixed and mutable signs. Its similarity with Sthira Dasa is to that extent only. After picking up the idea from this term (Trikoot) it has been found that this Dasa system can have three fixed durations depending upon the nature of sign with which the Dasa commence. 他 If it starts with a moveable sign the total Dasa duration would be 84 years and each sign shall have a period of 7 years. 他 If it begins with a fixed sign the total Dasa duration shall be of 96 years wherein each sign shall operate for a period of 8 years. 他 In case the Dasa commence with a dual sign the total duration shall be 108 years and each sign shall have a period of 9 years. These three different Dasa durations form the three peaks (Trikoot) of this Dasa system. May be because of these three different Dasa durations term Trikoota has been used in the sutra (Mandookastrikutah)- Mandook Dasa of three different durations. Else what can be the use of the term Trikoot after establishing the Dasa sequence as per standard definition of Mandook Gati. One may say that three peaks are there in the prevalent system also. For example, in the above case, there are three peaks of 28 years, 32 years and 36 years. But they are fused to give a constant Dasa duration of 96 years always; whereas, they must be clearly explicit to give three Dasa durations for the moveable, fixed and the dual signs with which the Dasa begins. That is what has been shown above to give three explicit Dasa durations to justify the term Trikoot more pronouncedly.
6.0 Commencement of Dasa The sutra given in Jaimini Upadesha Sutra for Mandook Dasa is as under 4
427
Sthuladarshavaishmyashryo Mandookastrikutah (2/IV/15) The scholars and commentaries (Karikas) including BPHS and Vridhkarika etc have invariably suggested to take the stronger sign between the Lagna and the 7th house (sign) for commencement of Dasa. Jaimini as usual is silent. But the term Vaishmyashriyo (VishamAashrio) has been explicitly used which implies that this Dasa would always start with an odd sign because it is completely dependent upon (Ashrit) the odd signs to begin with. One must not forget that this falls in the category of Navamsha Dasa type (Vishame Tadadirnavamshah - Chapter 2, Quarter - III, Sutra no.1) and should not be clubbed with other Dasa types. If the Lagna is an even sign the 7th house would also have an even sign. So the Dasa would start with an even sign only in that case should one follows the prevalent suggestions. This again indicates that the age old suggestion of different Karikas is fraught with some gargantuan error as it violates the condition that this Dasa should always be commencing with an odd sign. There must not be any confusion in this respect. The term Adarsh used in this sutra is conveniently ignored by all the scholars or it has been taken as 7th sign or Abhimukha which is certainly erroneous. The term Adarsh has been used by the author in the beginning of the 3rd quarter of second chapter of this text also (sutra no.2) i.e. Navamsha Dasa which has got to start always with an odd sign (Vishame --). Adarsh is not Abhimukha sign. If we follow this suggestion i.e. of Adarsh, the Dasa shall always start with an odd sign. For example, if Lagna is an even sign; say Cancer, the Dasa would start from the Adarsh sign that is Aquarius. There is no question of the Dasa starting from the stronger between the Lagna and the 7th house (sign). This obscure advice has been made even in Vridhakarika and has been followed almost by all the fellow astrologers. But why and how such suggestions should be there if the Dasa has to always begin with an odd sign. If the Lagna is an odd sign the Dasa would commence with the same sign and in case Lagna has an even sign it would begin with its Adarsh sign which is again always odd. So in Mandook Dasa this concept of stronger between Lagna and 7th sign does not apply. In many other Dasa of the Jaimini such technique of stronger between the Lagna and 7th house are used but here it is strictly governed by the concept of Adarsh and Odd sign. Any deviation from this basic concept would give rise to some other type of Dasa system is the humble opinion of this scribe.
7.0 Dasa Duration Further the duration of various signs in this Dasa system has been made unnecessarily debatable. Ancient authorities have suggested 7, 8 and 9 years respectively for moveable, fixed and dual signs. BPHS tells it (Mandook Dasa) is akin to Sthira Dasa - Sthirachcha Dasa Sama. It is hard to say how this concept of Sthira Dasa has been fused here with the Mandook Dasa. If something is similar to some other thing that does not mean they are one and the same thing. Hence the word sama has to read in that background. The similarity can be only upto the point of fixing the Dasa duration for moveable, fixed and common signs. The term Trikoot; therefore, can easily be taken as a pointer for picking up three Dasa durations (Trikoot) in the case of Mandook Dasa. The total Dasa period as per prevalent practice works out to be 96 years. This has not been accepted by the scribe. A modern savant has preferred to dispense with these suggestions and gone for his own innovative ideas for working out the Dasa period of different signs 5
428
which is an altered version of the technique applied in the Chara Dasa system. How far that is valid is for the research minded students to verify but that has certainly uprooted the Mandook Dasa from its very foundation. Had this been the case many would have tried the same in past as well because going for a self devised technique is not too difficult a job.
8.0 Flaw in Sequence of Prevalent Dasa Pattern Let us now think over the sequence of operation for Dasa of different signs. In the prevalent system continuity in sequence of operation is evidently amiss. For example if the Dasa starts with Aries for Aries Lagna chart, sequence of Dasa would be Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. Since the Dasa starts with Aries, it must end on Pisces for maintaining the cyclic order of signs. In the above case end is correct. But after Capricorn it shifts to Taurus and after Aquarius it goes to Gemini which breaks the cyclic pattern. Since the first phase of Dasa for moveable signs ends here on Capricorn, it must move to Aquarius or Sagittarius depending upon forward or backward movement to maintain the continuity. Similar discrepancy can be observed after the end of second phase that is for the fixed signs. Here it ought to move to Pisces or Capricorn for maintaining the continuity. If that is done then the Dasa would not finally end on Pisces. Any break in normal sequence is often described as a particular motion or condition. This is not the case here. Scholars have not taken this discrepancy into account. Here is hidden another secret to have the correct order of succession for maintaining the cyclic continuity. Because of all such flaws this Dasa have been shrouded with foggy confusions and each savant has either committed the eternal error or gone by his own ways. Whether that can be described as a research is for the learned readers to decide. Second mistake committed by the ancient authorities is strict adherence to any particular type of Chakra (cycle) while working out the order of Dasa signs. Lets us not forget that Prakriti and Vikriti Chakra are not only independent but also complimentary for each other. As the Prana and Apan are independent but works in complimentary manner to support the life system so does these two chakras work to give a sustained life force to many Dasa system. This would be more clear while elaborating the sequence of signs in Dasa pattern.
9.0 What is Mandook Dasa? Mandook Dasa is a sign Dasa where the sequence of operating Dasa signs are maintained in alternate manner by jumping one sign in direct or reverse order depending upon the odd or even nature of Lagna. This Dasa would always start with an odd sign and can have any of the three Dasa durations (Total) of 84 yrs, 96 years or 108 yrs depending upon the nature of sign with which the Dasa commence. For the charts with Lagna of odd sign it would start with the same sign but for the charts of even Lagna Dasa would begin with the Adarsh sign of the Lagna. Except for luminaries and Saturn Adarsh sign is the second sign of the same lord. It is always an odd sign as is clear from the table given below. Sn 1 2 3 4
Lagna Aries Taurus Gemini Cancer
Adarsh Sign Scorpio Libra Virgo Aquarius 6

Starting Dasa Aries Libra Gemini Aquarius
5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12
Leo Virgo Libra Scorpio Sagittarius Capricorn Aquarius Pisces
Capricorn Gemini Taurus Aries Pisces Leo Cancer Sagittarius
Leo Gemini Libra Aries Sagittarius Leo Aquarius Sagittarius
Many savants take the term Adarsh as 4 according to pneumonic (Katpayadi) system and for even signs that again gives an odd sign because for each even sign in the zodiac its 4th sign is always an odd sign. Adarsh sign of a moveable sign is its 8th sign and for a fixed sign it is the 6th sign reckoned from there. The counting here is made in zodiacal order. For the common sign the Adarsh sign is the 4th sign from there but the reckoning is direct for odd common sign and reverse for even dual sign.
10.0 Total Dasa Period If the Dasa starts with a moveable sign each sign shall have a Dasa period of 7 years and the total Dasa duration would be 84 years. For a Dasa commencing with a fixed sign the total Dasa period will be 96 years with each sign having duration of 8 years. In case of common sign the duration of each sign shall be 9 years which gives a total Dasa period of 108 years. Thus, the Dasa for Aries, Scorpio, Taurus and Libra Lagna, the total Dasa period will be 84 years. For Cancer, Leo, Capricorn and Aquarius Lagna the total Dasa period is 96 years and it is 108 years for Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces birth charts.
11.0 Correct Sequence of Dasa Signs It may please be noted at the outset that the Dasa Sequence of Mandook Dasa is little complicated and requires sufficient care while working for the same. The correct sequence of Dasa must follow the cyclic continuity regardless of its running in direct or reverse order. If the Lagna is odd the Dasa would start with the same sign and it would first proceed in direct order and then reverse while switching over. When the Lagna is an even sign, the Dasa would begin with its Adarsh sign but proceed in reverse way and the course would again change to direct while switching over. The reversal in motion takes place after the end of 6th Dasa. The Dasa, where the direction changes (or the 7th Dasa), is normally quite critical for giving unexpected effects. For example, if the Dasa starts with Leo it must end on Cancer. Since the Lagna (Leo) is an odd sign it would first run direct and then become reverse while switching over to the set of even signs. So it would run as Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius, Aries, Gemini, Taurus, Pisces, Capricorn, Scorpio, Virgo and Cancer. In case this reverse trend is not applied the Dasa would end on Pisces (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces) which would break the order of cyclic continuity. If the Lagna is an even sign (Capricorn), the Dasa would still start with Leo but in reverse way and the order would again change while switching over from odd to even set of signs. However; it would end on Cancer to maintain the cyclic continuity. Its order of succession 7
430
will be Leo, Gemini, Aries, Aquarius, Sagittarius, Libra, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces, Taurus and Cancer. This is applicable every where in all the Dasa signs. It can be understood in simple way. When it begins with an odd sign the running would be direct till the odd signs continue. The moment it switches over to the even sign in cyclic order it would automatically become reverse. Thus, the cyclic continuity is maintained without any effort. For simplicity of the readers a table of Dasa sequence starting from different odd signs for various Lagna is given below Table of Sequence for Main Dasa Periods Sn Lagna 1 Aries 2

Here the difference in sequence of operation for odd and even Lagna is to be noted carefully. For example, the Dasa for Aries and Scorpio Lagna begins with the sign Aries but follows different course of operation to end on Pisces. Students must not loose sight of this fact.
12.0 Sequence of Signs in Sub-Periods The order of succession in sub-period shall also follow the same trend as in the main Dasa period. The first Bhukti (sub-period) would be of the same sign and it would end up maintaining the order of cyclic continuity. This has to be done very carefully. Say; for example, if we have to see the sub-period of Gemini Dasa when Lagna is Aries, it would proceed as - Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius, Aries, Pisces, Capricorn, Scorpio, 8
431
Virgo, Cancer, Taurus. But the Sub-period of Gemini Dasa when Lagna is Taurus it would go like - Gemini, Aries, Aquarius, Sagittarius, Libra, Leo, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces, Taurus. Similarly if the sub-period of Cancer Dasa is to be worked for (say) Leo Lagna it can move as - Cancer, Taurus, Pisces, Capricorn, Scorpio, Virgo, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius, Aries, Gemini. But for an even Lagna (say) Scorpio it would proceed as Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces, Taurus, Aries, Aquarius, Sagittarius, Libra, Leo, Gemini. Thus, the same trend of movement as has been followed in the main period of odd or even Lagna is maintained to get the cyclic continuity. Students must take due care while working the sub-periods by keeping an eye on the pattern followed in Maha Dasa of any particular Lagna. The difference in sequence has to be noted and maintained diligently. We are not giving the speculum for Sub-periods because each Lagna needs a separate table for Bhukti of all the twelve signs.
13.0 Calculation of Balance of Dasa at Birth The balance period of Dasa operating at birth should always be calculated for any Dasa systems because the discarnate soul takes birth to reap the consequences of its own Karma of previous births. The mechanism of reincarnation is complex and may begin from any point of any previous birth whose actions have become most potent for enabling the rebirth and to fructify immediately after the birth heralding the beginning of events in new life. Birth is the first event to the series of events cosmically planned to materialise in the current birth. It would commence from the same point where it was left by the soul at the time of discarnation. If the Dasa balance at birth is taken as zero it would imply that there was no residual Karma left in the previous birth and that would negate the possibility of rebirth itself. This is a condition of emancipation. As such, balance of Dasa at birth is calculated to reach to the same point. Unfortunately, the modern savants fail to take note of this esoteric fact and proceed without computing the Dasa balance at birth. This is fundamentally an erroneous practice and; therefore, must be avoided always. Dasa balance at birth must be calculated for all the Dasa where Dasa period is already fixed. Mandook Dasa is also a Dasa with fixed Dasa periods. In the Mandook and many other Dasa system it is worked out as ratio of the longitude traversed by Lagna to the total degree of zodiac and the Dasa duration of the sign operating at birth. If the longitude of Lagna is M and the Dasa duration of the sign operating at birth is N; then the Dasa consumed (Dc) till the time of birth would be Dc = M/360 X N So, the balance of Dasa (Db) at birth would be Db = N - Dc This would be clear from the example cases discussed to demonstrate the efficacy of Mandook Dasa whose method is different than the prevalent approach. It is completely new and away from even those who claim to have done great research on this Dasa system. Before taking up the illustrative examples of actual charts to show the efficacy of Mandook Dasa System (MDS) in the light of above adumbrations I wish to submit here that the correct interpretation of the term Trikoot in terms of three fixed Dasa durations of MDS has been brought to print for the 9

first time. I do not intend to take credit for this as my original thought or research; which many of my contemporary scholars would have liked to have, because in all honesty I must confess that it was taught to me by my elders in the family. It must not have been theirs also in originality because they also might have learnt it from their Gurus. Unfortunately those masters did not come forward to check those authors who have twisted the Mandook Gati in their commentaries. Perhaps this was on account of the sobriety and austerity acquired through ardent practice of Tantra in true sense. Here; however, it is explained for all so that the lost glory of this science can be regained once again in the spirit and letter with which astrology was developed by the great seers. Chart 1: Indira Gandhi This is the chart of ex-prime minister of India Smt Indira Gandhi. Her birth data is as follows DOB: 19 Nov 1917 TOB: 23:11 Hrs Co-ordinates: 25N27 : 81E51 Lagna - 117d 03m
The sign rising at birth is Cancer. It is an even sign. Therefore; the Dasa would commence from its Adarsh sign. The Adarsh sign of Cancer is Aquarius (8th sign) which is a fixed sign. Hence total Dasa duration would be 96 years and each sign will operate for a period of 8 years. Since the Lagna is an even sign, the order of Dasa would run in reverse way. {Balance of Dasa; Db = N - Dc} Her Lagna is 117degree 03minutes. Hence, Dc = 117.05 / 360 X 8 = 2.60 = 2yr 7m 6d 10

It is aspected by Mars and Jupiter. Its lord Venus is nailed on nodal axis. Further the Matri Pad falls in Aquarius, identical with 8th house, that does not augur well for longevity of the mother. The event occurred during the Bhukti of Capricorn, which being 4th from Libra, again represents mother by all means. It is occupied by Moon, the significator of mother and is aspected by Jupiter, Mars, Sun and Mercury. The combined aspect of Mercury, the 12th lord and Sun carries extremely virulent currents of separation. During Capricorn Bhukti under Libra Dasa too many factors pertinent with mother were simultaneously at work as a cumulative effect of which separation from mother materialised in the form of mother's death. Her husband expired on 8th September 1960. That time Aries Dasa was in operation. Aries Dasa was in operation from 13-04-1955. The sign Aries is also the Vyaya Pad; so, some loss of valuable nature was quite expected. It is also Dara Pad and; therefore, contains all the cosmic ingredients to represent husband. It is aspected by Mars, Sun and Mercury and the force of separation as stated above is once again actively at play here. The event occurred in Virgo Bhukti and the sign Virgo is aspected by lunar nodes and Venus. It is shadastaka (6/8) from Maha Dasa sign and energised the loss of husband. Her father expired on 27th May 1964. That time Pisces Dasa was in operation. The sign Pisces represents 9th house and; therefore, fully stood for father, his health, body etc. Pisces Dasa started from 13th April 1963. Let us see the sub-periods in Pisces Dasa 13 04 1963 00 08 0000 - Pisces - Pisces ---------------------13 12 1963 00 08 0000 - Pisces - Taurus 12

----------------------13 08 1964 It was during the Bhukti of Taurus under Pisces Dasa when death of the father occurred. Taurus being 3rd from the 9th house signified the end of life of the father. This Dasa bhukti was perhaps the most ideal period for departure of the father. The greatest national honour of Bharat Ratna was awarded to her on 26th January 1972. Taurus Dasa commenced from 13th April 1971. Taurus is the house of gains and is occupied by Jupiter. It is also identical with Mantra Pad denoting fortune. Such awards are often won by virtue of Purva punya. The 11 house has a distinct role in enhancement of prestige of the native because it is the Maya of the 10th house. Here the 11 pad (Labha Pad) falls in the Lagna (Cancer). Because of these close inter-linkage of vibrations associated with prestige she got the ward during Taurus Dasa. 13 04 1971 00 08 0000 - Taurus - Taurus ---------------------13 12 1971 00 08 0000 - Taurus - Cancer ---------------------13 08 1972 At that time Bhukti of Cancer was in operation. Cancer is birth ascendant is identical with Labh Pad. It is also aspected by Jupiter, Sun and Mercury. Cancer is also identical with Bhagya Pad. Such things do not happen in life without adequate support of luck. Hence Cancer Bhukti in Taurus Dasa was quite appropriate for receipt of this ward. Smt. Gandhi was also called the iron lady of India and commanded terrific respect among all the Parliamentarians of India. But she was treated worst when she was out of power. She was expelled from Lok Sabha, was arrested and taken to Tihar Jail of Delhi. These unfortunate events took place between 18-11-1978 to 20-01-1979. All this happened during the last phase of Taurus Dasa. This is because of its occupation by the 6th lord Jupiter which is also the dispositor of Rahu. The 6th house is not merely 6th house but is much more virulent on account of the fact that it is also the Arudha (Pad) of the 8th house. Hence this Dasa can not be expected to end without giving some excruciating and unforgettable wound. Let us see the details of Bhukti under Taurus Dasa which started from 13-04-1971 13 04 1971 00 00 0004 - Taurus - Taurus to Pisces ---------------------13 04 1975 00 08 0002 - Taurus - Aquarius to Leo -----------------------13 12 1977 Gemini sub-period under Taurus Dasa started from 13th December 1977 and it was followed by Aries Bhukti. Gemini is identical with 12th house and is nailed on nodal axis. Similarly Aries is identical with Vyaya Pad and carries the currents of loss of respect, power, prestige etc. No wonder Smt. Gandhi suffered humiliation during the operation of these Bhukti. 13

Sanjay Gandhi expired in plane crash on 23-06-1980. That time Cancer Dasa was in operation. The incidence occurred during Virgo Bhukti under Cancer Dasa. 13 04 1979 00 08 0000 - Cancer - Cancer ---------------------13 12 1979 00 08 0000 - Cancer - Virgo ---------------------13 08 1980 Virgo being 11th house from the 5th house (Scorpio) is imbued with accident for the offsprings. The Arudha of Virgo falls in Aquarius which carries the currents of death in this chart. Cancer is occupied by Saturn and Virgo is aspected by Rahu-ketu. Hence the loss of son was caused during this Dasa Bhukti. Smt. Gandhi was assassinated on 31st October 1984 during the Cancer Dasa. Cancer being Lagna represents the self of the native. It is occupied by Saturn which is the lord of 7th and 8th house and hence carries the killing currents. Placement of Saturn in 6th position from its house (Aquarius) is bound to curtail the longevity. Hence operation of Cancer Dasa at advance age could be injurious for life force. Let us see the sub-periods during Cancer Dasa which commenced from 13th of April 1979. 13 04 1979 00 00 0004 - Cancer - Cancer to Taurus ---------------------13 04 1983 00 08 0000 - Cancer - Aries ---------------------13 12 1983 00 08 0000 - Cancer - Aquarius ---------------------13 08 1984 00 08 0000 - Cancer - Sagittatius ------------------------13 04 1985 The unfortunate incidence occurred during Sagittarius sub-period of Cancer Dasa. Sagittarius is occupied by Rahu. It is also identical Mrityu Pad. Hence death during this Dasa was quite possible and it took place. Chart2: Sri Charan Singh, Late P.M Of India The chart discussed below belongs to Sri Charan Singh, the late prime minister of India from July 1979 to January (14th) 1980. The birth particulars have been picked up from Mr. K. N. Rao's book on Mandook Dasa. The time is said to have been fixed by Bhrigu samhita and later rectified by Pt. Hardeo Sharma Trivedi. Let us see how Mandook Dasa works on this chart. 14

DOB: 23 December 1902; TOB: 07:23 Hrs POB: Bagpat (Meerut), UP Lagna - 254d 32m The Lagna is Sagittarius. It is an odd sign and the Dasa would start from this sign only. The order of Dasa shall be direct. Since it is a common sign the total Dasa duration would be 108 years and each sign shall operate for 9 years during its Dasa. {Balance of Dasa; Db = N - Dc} His Lagna is 254 degree 32 minute. Hence, Dc = 254.53 / 360 X 9 = 6.363 = 6yr 4m 11d Db = 2yr 7m 19d (Sagittarius) Important Events His marriage took place on 25th June 1925. Daughter was born on 14th September 1927 Was elected first time in February 1937 Was jailed during emergency 1975 Became deputy prime minister in March 1977 Remained prime minister of India from 28th July to 14th January 1980 Breathed his last on 29th May 1987 We would try to see the timing of these events in the light of Dasa and Bhukti operating in Mandook Dasa. Gemini is identical with the 7th house and; as such, marriage in this Dasa-operation was quite probable. Let us see the Bhukti that caused the materialisation of marriage. Gemini Dasa started from 12-08-1923. 12 08 1923 00 09 0000 - Gemini - Gemini ----------------------12 05 1924 00 09 0000 - Gemini - Leo ---------------------12 02 1925 00 09 0000 -Gemini - Libra ------------------------12 11 1925 The marriage took place during Gemini-Libra period. Libra is identical with 11th house signifying eternal friendship. It is occupied by Rahu which is known for giving quick marriage. Hence the marriage occurred during Libra Bhukti of Gemini Dasa. His daughter was born on 14-09-1927. Gemini Dasa was again working. The Anter Dasa details are as under. 12 11 1925 00 09 0000 - Gemini - Sagittarius ---------------------16

12 10 1926 00 09 0000 - Gemini - Aquarius ---------------------12 07 1927 00 09 0000 - Gemini - Aries ----------------------12 04 1927 The sign Aries is identical with 5th house (progeny) and his first child was born during Bhukti of Aries. He won his first election from Chhaprauli (Bagpat) in United province in February 1937 during Leo Dasa. The sign Leo in his horoscope is identical with the house of luck (9th). Leo is also identical with 9th house (Luck- Bhagya). Leo Dasa started from 12th August 1932. 12 08 1932 00 09 0000 - Leo - Leo ----------------------12 05 1933 00 09 0000 - Leo - Libra ---------------------12 02 1934 00 09 0000 - Leo - Sagittarius --------------------12 11 1934 00 09 0000 - Leo - Aquarius --------------------12 10 1935 00 09 0000 - Leo - Aries ---------------------12 07 1936 00 09 0000 - Leo - Gemini ---------------------12 04 1937 The electoral victory occurred during Gemini Bhukti which is identical with 7th house. The 7th house being 10th from the 10th house also comprises of impulses of power and position. So he is victory is well justified during the said Dasa and Bhukti. He was jailed many times during his struggle for freedom of India but was arrested for no genuine reasons by the government of Smt. Indira Gandhi during emergency that was imposed on 25th of June 1975. That time Taurus Dasa was in operation. Taurus being 6th house in the horoscope was bound to give some trouble, humiliation and incarceration as it is also aspected by Rahu, Jupiter and Saturn. Let us see the Bhukti during Taurus Dasa that began from 12th August 1968. 12 08 1968 00 06 0004 - Taurus - Taurus to Cancer ---------------------12 02 1973 17

00 03 0002 - Taurus - Gemini, Leo & Libra ---------------------12 05 1975 00 09 0000 - Taurus - Sagittarius ----------------------12 03 1976 The arrest took place during the operation of Sagittarius Bhukti which is Lagna but Taurus and Sagittarius are at 6-8 nexus. Because of the shadashtaka position of Dasa and Bhukti signs this event could be enabled. He also won the election after emergency and became a deputy prime minister in the Govt. of Morarji Desai. In fact he was bidding for the post of prime minister that time itself but because of intervention of Jaiprakash Narayan he had to settle with the post of deputy prime minister and ministry for home affairs. The Aries Bhukti gave the high position but owing to dwirdwadas (1/12 - nexus) position of Dasa and Bhukti Rasi he missed the top slot. He later became prime minister on 28th July 1979 during the operation of Pisces Dasa. The sign Pisces is identical with 4th house and is aspected by Mercury, Venus, Sun, Moon and Mars. Let us see the Bhukti in Pisces Dasa that started from 12th august 1977. 12 08 1977 00 09 0000 - Pisces - Pisces ---------------------12 05 1978 00 09 0000 - Pisces - Capricorn --------------------12 02 1979 00 09 0000 - Pisces - Scorpio ---------------------12 11 1979 He became prime minister during the operation of Scorpio Bhukti under Pisces Dasa. Since Scorpio is identical with 12th house the impulses that gave him this post was not strong enough to sustain the position for long. Why and Scorpio could give this lift? It is because the sign Scorpio happens be 10th from the Arudha Lagna ((Aquarius). In fact the 2nd house denotes the crown and Dhan Pad falls in Libra occupied by Rahu. His government fell during the Bhukti of Virgo which is 12 from Dhan Pad and 8th from Arudh Lagna. He departed from this world on 29 May 1987. That time Capricorn Dasa was in operation that commenced from 12-08-1986. Capricorn being the 2nd house is imbued with killing currents. Let us see the Bhukti in Capricorn Dasa 12 08 1986 00 09 0000 - Capricorn - Capricorn --------------------12 05 1987 00 09 0000 - Capricorn - Scorpio --------------------12 02 1988 18

The death occurred during Scorpio Bhukti of Capricorn Dasa. Scorpio being identical with the 12th house denotes the departure to other world also. Scorpio in natural zodiac is also symbolic to death in the natural zodiac. Hence death was quite possible during Scorpio subperiod. Chart 3: This chart is again taken from the book of Mr. Rao on Mandook Dasa. The birth particulars (DOB - 04-11-1951) and planetary details of the female native as given in that book is as under Lagna - Gemini 2d 21m; Sun - Libra 16d 55m; Moon - Sagittarius 26d 09m; Mars - Leo 25d 21m; Mercury - Scorpio 01d 28m; Jupiter(R) - Pisces 12d 14m; Venus - Virgo 01d 28m; Saturn Virgo 16d 37m; Rahu - Aquarius 13d 18m; Ketu - Leo 13d 18m. (as given in the said book) The Lagna is Gemini. It is an odd sign and the Dasa would start from this sign only. The order of Dasa shall be direct. Since it is a common sign the total Dasa duration would be 108 years and each sign shall operate for 9 years during its Dasa.

Let us see the Bhukti that effectuated the event under Libra Dasa. 15 04 1968 00 00 0003 - Libra - Libra + Sagit + Aqua + Aries ---------------------15 04 1971 00 09 0000 - Libra - Pisces ---------------------15 01 1971 00 09 0000 - Libra - Capricorn ----------------------15 10 1972 Libra is the 7th house from the Arudha Lagna and, hence has the appropriate cosmic currents to enable marriage during its period. The event took place during the Bhukti of Capricorn. The sign Capricorn is 8th in the birth chart that often remains loaded with the impulses of marital pleasures. It also happens to be the Pada of 12 house (Taurus) the bed pleasure. In fact Capricorn is the Pad of Taurus (12th house) and Taurus is the Pad of Capricorn (8th house). Strong currents of marriage and marital happiness were indicated during Libra Dasa and Capricorn Bhukti. Hence the event of marriage stands fully justified by the Mandook Dasa. Chart 4: This example has been taken from a previous article in Saptarishi Astrology. The native Ben Affleck earned huge revenue, name and fame for his role in "Pearl Harbour". His birth particulars as given in the said magazine is as under:The Lagna is Gemini. It is an odd sign and the Dasa would start from this sign only. The order of Dasa shall be direct. Since it is a common sign the total Dasa duration would be 108 years and each sign shall operate for 9 years during its Dasa. {Balance of Dasa; Db = N - Dc} The Lagna is Gemini 156d 05m i.e. 75degree 05minute Hence, Dc = 75.083 / 360 X 9 = 1.877 20

It is also aspected by the Yoga Karka Venus. It does not only contain the currents of name and fame but is also loaded with the strong pulsations of gains because it is identical with Labh Pad. Similarly, Leo is Arudha Lagna and is identical with Bhagya Pad. Hence the combined currents of reputation and gains enabled him to earn name, fame and money during sub-period of Leo under Sagittarius Dasa. Chart 5: Val Kilmer became over night a celebrity after release of 'The Saint", a role for which Mel Gibson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Hugh Grant, Kevin Costner and Johnny Deep all had refused. Schwarzenegger later said he was sorry he did not do it after runway hit of The Saint. Given below are the birth particulars of Val Kilmer.
The Lagna is Virgo. It is an even sign and the Dasa would start from its Adarsh sign that is Gemini. The order of Dasa shall be reverse. Since it is a common sign the total Dasa duration would be 108 years and each sign shall operate for 9 years during its Dasa. {Balance of Dasa; Db = N - Dc} The Lagna is Virgo 26d 26m i.e. 176degree 26minute Hence, 22

It is also identical with Labh Pad and Sukh Pad. Hence this Dasa was most appropriately suiting to bestow him what he gained after the release of "The Saint" on 4th April 1997. Let us see the sub-period in Libra Dasa that commenced from 2nd July 1991. 02 07 1991 00 06 0004 - Libra - Libra to Sagittarius --------------------02 01 1996 00 09 0000 - Libra - Scorpio ---------------------02 10 1996 00 09 0000 - Libra - Capricorn ---------------------02 10 1997 The name, fame and money came during the Bhukti of Capricorn under Libra Dasa. The sign Capricorn is identical with 5th house and; as such, is distinctly associated with fortune and finance. So, the native got immense success and wealth during this period. Chart 6: The chart discussed below belongs to disciple cum friend of the scribe from Ahmadabad. He suffered a heart attack on 4th September 2007, was hospitalised and by grace of God saved. His birth particulars are as under.

See the 4th house of his horoscope. It is aspected by Venus and Jupiter. Jupiter being the lord of the 8th house and dispositor of Ketu is strong malefic here. As explained elsewhere the aspect of Jupiter is extremely strong here to cause virulent effects. Sun is spoiled by aspect of lunar nodes. 4th house is also infested with currents of disease as Roga Pad falls there. The 4th house has no Argala; so, there is no check valve for dissipation of energy from the 4th field of the horoscope. On the contrary, Moon, Jupiter and Venus work as leak points for drainage of energy from the 4th field. Hence problem in heart is a distinct possibility to the native. Let us see the Dasa sequence and Bhukti in this birth map. The Lagna is Taurus. It is an even sign and the Dasa would start from the Adarsh sign that is Libra. The order of Dasa shall be reverse. Since it is a moveable sign the total Dasa duration would be 84 years and each sign shall operate for 7 years during its Dasa. {Balance of Dasa; Db = N - Dc} The Lagna is Taurus 03d 10m i.e. 33degree 10minute Hence, Dc = 33.16 / 360 X 7 = 0.092 = 00yr 01m 03d Db = 06yr 10m 27d (Libra) Balance of Libra Dasa at birth was 06 years, 10 month and 27 days. The sign Pisces is aspected by Rahu - Ketu and occupied by Sun and Mercury. Being the 11th house vibrations of Pisces are not good for health. Pisces is also identical with the Pad of Lagna and 3rd house. Here the killing currents of 3rd house is mixed with the life force (Lagna) that can be injurious at some stage because mixture of sea water with drinking water is not good for consumption. Hence he suffered the stroke but survived. Chart 7: The chart discussed below is taken from the case file of the scribe. The birth particulars of the native are

DOB: 01-01-1971, TOB: 7:25 Hrs, Coordinates: 28N39:77E13, Lagna - 258d 12m The Lagna is Sagittarius. It is an odd sign and the Dasa would start from this sign and the order of Dasa shall be direct. Aries is identical with 5th house and is also Bhagya Pad. Hence marriage during this Dasa-Bhukti is quite possible. She also qualified for IRS during the same Bhukti which came as a gain of Bhagya (luck) coupled by good fortune. The son was born during Scorpio Bhukti. Scorpio is occupied by the significator of progeny Jupiter which is also Lagna lord. It is aspected by Saturn from the 5th house. Saturn has only delayed the motherhood slightly but did not deny it. The husband met with a fatal accident and passed away during Taurus Bhukti. Taurus is 12th from the house of husband and denotes departure to other world. It is aspected by Mars. If we look from conventional cannons we find that 7th house is aspected by all the separative planets viz Saturn, Rahu and Sun. As such, widowhood was clear in the chart.
Conclusion Here I have discussed the Mandook Dasa with all three types of Dasa periods (84, 96 & 108 years - Trikoot) as was applicable to various charts. Only Pad has been mostly taken for interpretation. Char Karaka and Karkamsha etc which gives still more convincing interpretation has been deliberately avoided because it may confuse the students till calculation of correct Atma Karaka is not told to them. I have dealt this Dasa on 267 charts but only one chart has been included here from my study file. Examples have been taken whose events have been discussed by others to prove the efficacy of this method.
