El Yunque Visitor Center
The project consisted on creating a visitor center for the Yunque Rainforest in Puerto Rico. We found very interesting that the rainforest is full of unique and rich plant and animal life specific to Puerto Rico like some epiphytes and el Coqui-a small frog. With this in mind the concept for our project was to use the visitor center as a place to exhibit the natural environment and have the visitor interacts with it. The building’s structured in a zigzag concrete shell manner that allows for consistent amounts of openings for glassing so that the visitor is in constant visual interaction with the environment. The concrete structure also allows for part of the building to not be completely sealed and allowing the plant life to take over the interior of the building therefore becoming active part to the exhibit.

SFIFTH HIFTING HYBRIDS STUDIO SEMESTER

Battery Park City, Manhattan
The studio focused on using digital generative techniques to create a process in which there is a constant interaction between what is generated digitally and the formal issues of program, space and structure. There is an evaluation of growth patterns and graduated intensities to create formations that shift from part to whole relationship. The proposal for the site is a performing arts center, which seeks to integrate the community with the implementation of concert venues, educational facilities and street-level retail. This proposal interconnects the exciting conditions of both the built and the cultural environment. The feeling of community is further enhanced with the establishment of windows facing the concert stage-creating not just a public space for the community to enjoy but also draw visitors to lower Manhattan.

Brooklyn Bridge Waterfront
The location of this site is the perimeter of the BQE and the East River, it has impressive views of the Brooklyn Bridge and lower Manhattan. These views are mostly enjoyed by the residents of Brooklyn heights but by adding a hotel to this water’s edge it will give the opportunity to others to come and stay and enjoy the incredible views. The program is a hotel in which the views are unobstructed, giving the guest an unique perspective. The room and the hall are organized by creating a base unit which contains rooms side by side then stacked in opposite directions, to create three levels of rooms which are all connected and interlocked by the hallway making a connection core. The hotel’s rooms and hallways connect through a system of paths throughout the site that give different views and interaction points with the East River.

Metro West Bridge-Wave Bridge
The project consisted on digitally modeling an existing bridge and further analysis its potential for animation. A 2 minute animation was produced narrating not only the potential of the bridge but the tectonic aspects of it. The exercises allowed for 3d modeling experiments but also how to represent in 2d form an animated sequence. The bridge was model and animated using Maya software.

Bookshelf
The design of the bookshelf consisted on the idea of not using any screws for its assembly and to have an easy way to transport it. The way in which it does not require any screws is that it implements a modified version of Japanese wood joint called Mortised Rabbeted Scarf joint. The joint consist of using a final key piece that locks the wood pieces together, in the case of the bookshelf the shelf and the vertical structure components are both the locking piece for each other. The vertical components and the shelf component work together to snap into place and they each hold each other together. Due to the fact that there is no screws in the furniture is can be assembled easily with no need of tools it is only a matter figuring which pieces go together like a puzzle. It can also be taken apart just as easily so it can be transported in pieces instead of a full scale bookshelf. The Vertical structure is made from two 1/2” Birch plywood milled pieces that are glued together to create the proper joint connection. The shelf components are made from two 3/8” Luana plywood also glued together. 32
