03 healing island housing and care center prof. Kazuyo Sejima (SANAA) http://www.sanaa.co.jp/
IC ADVANCED ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 2nd year Masters (Mar. 2019-July 2019) Location: Inujima island, Japan
Program: • Inujima is a small island where only 20 islanders are remaining with average age of 80 years. Depopulation, in need of development of a settlement • The landscape has gently sloping hills and a lot of greenery. Once used for industrial needs, it creates ambiance of that time by having a lot of basins, which remain from the old quarries and appear as ponds • SANAA’s already existing project in the village, “Inujima Art House Project” started in 2010 by transforming empty homes into exhibition spaces. In this way, the landscape started slowly changing. • Aim of the project is to develop a proposal that establishes a clear relationship between the artificial and the natural landscape, between architecture and environment Design principles: • The island as a whole is a place where architecture ultimately becomes environment - one healing place • People coming from the busy cities in Japan and worldwide, could spend their time by relaxing and expressing themselves in a creative way during their stay • Sensitive way of everything that is designed, by using the potential of the nature and: 1. new health care center, as the place where people would be gathering/working creatively 2. mediation hill, as the highest point on the island 3. abandoned houses, as part of the village where people would be housed

1. Health Care Center
• Deciding the position the center near the pond as a place that is isolated among the greenary and water • At the same time the new building is close to the village, linking the two intervention with a new path • Shaping the space by the natural context, as it has a very important role in the design of the building • Used during the whole day (day and night), always open for both the people living and the visitors

3. Houses
Transformation of the existing housing • Abandoned houses in the village are renovated and transformed, linked to eachother - forming a community housing. • Connecting the houses through a continuous path with shared ‘pocket’ gardens. • Adding pillars allows people to hang their bellongings, to make a shared place by transforming the space (exhibitions, workshops, etc.)

05 MARS Facade System Habitat’s Envelope Prof. Dr. Nastri Massimiliano developed inside the Material Balance Research Group https://www.materialbalance.polimi.it/
MASTER THESIS Final project (Jan. 2019-June. 2020) Groupmate: Tamara Stefanovic Location: Planet Mars
Program: • To understand all the various aspects of the environment of Mars compared to Earth • To create a habitat’s envelope with the focus to maintain the view to the outside, but at the same time to protect the people from the radiation by creating a regolith shield • Protecting the crew from the low temperatures and using an isolation material for foundation and window frames • Providing a suitable form that can resist the pressure loads and the same inside air pressure as it is on Earth • The habitat would need to be anchored in the ground, due to the high-speed dust storms lasting from several days up to several months covering huge areas Design principles:
• Futuristic • Safety • Modular Design • Structural Strength • Dome • Prefabricated • In Situ • Reusable • Connectivity • Window view

external component with the integrated window system
window system: _the structure consists of three polycarbonate panes: outer debris pane is 1cm thick two middle pressure panes are 3.2cm thick _the final, scratch pane, is made of Mylar membrane and is integrated to the inner PLA layer _multiple PLA profile frames are connected and then screwed to the regolith layer _silica insulation is implemented between frames and panel in order to seal the connection shutter system: _placed above the window and connected to the PLA layer _it consists of mobile bars with the rotation angle of 90° _the shutter system allows the crew to control the amount of light entering the habitat _each bar is filled with Mylar sheets in order to provide additional radiation protection and insulation
