A Mondrian painting was taken to create a three-dimensional object in order to explore the iterative process of design. The design mainly focused on the rhythm of the painting as well as revolving around the datum created by the center line. The rhythm is represented by the horizontal planes, while the non-white colors are represented by the vertical planes.

First Process Model Design The project explored the use of ordering systems and spatial sequences. A kit of parts was given in order to design a pavilion using the concepts of contemplation and dialogue. The space resembles the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial as the visitors are taken down a corridor to close them off from the world upon arriving at the sitting area for private contemplation. The slits along the wall of the corridor mock the previous layout of columns, but begin to space out in a way that implies the need to walk through the space slower as the amount of light decreases to create a dark, personal space at the end.

After researching my client, Brandon Stanton, I analyzed the existing building environment of the Aqueduct Bridge Abutment in Georgetown, D.C. I then rehabilitated the aqueduct by relating private and public spaces, and creating an experience of interior space. This design incorporates Stanton’s work of exposing the human being by allowing visitors to experience the photographs in person as well as involve themselves in the process. The artist is exposed at the entrance with the slightly open facade, followed by exposure to the artwork and finally the opportunity to have their photograph taken and shared with the world. The structure of the building also evokes feeling in the visitors as they go through compressed, uncomfortable spaces followed by exposed, open spaces.

The project focused on developing a design for a sound room on H Street in Washington D.C. where muscisians would be able to visit, learn, and practice. There are three main studios, including a V.I.P. studio as well as a collaboration space and offices. The concept of this design is interlocking, as the original design involved interlocking three main C-shapes in order to define the primary spaces of the studios and collaboration space. The purpose of this was also to maintain a common design element that could be felt throughout the space. Each shape is constructed using a different shade of wood in order to define each separate element and theme. They influnece each other such as a wall created by one of the main shapes interlocking with a ceiling created by a plane of another shape.

Through multiple iterations, the facade of the building was created by extending one of the C shapes to frame the upper part of the building and also create a balcony for the V.I.P. studio to connect to the interior.
