WOOD-WOOD CONNECTIONS THROUGH DESIGN OF TWO VISIBLE CONNECTIONS

This is a chosen extract from the process of architectural elements in our master’s thesis I wanted to highlight. The whole master thesis from a more structural engineering perspective is find here: https://issuu.com/saraeidenvall/docs/acex30_eidenvall_samuelsson

Timber has been given an upswing with an increasing interest in new ways of building sustainably. With interests of letting the structures getting a more relevant role, by becoming more conscious of the structure in a building as something to show rather than hide. This opens up the discussion of joints as both structural elements and architectural features, and connections of structural members come to play an important role. To put it in a modern construction, engineered timber materials: glulam and cross-laminated timber, abbreviated to CLT, has been used and analysed for our connections.

Carpentry joints are today referred as historical connections. But with today’s increasing robot technology, opens up the possibility of now using these types of connections in a modern context, as the manufacturing no longer need to be done by hand. Whereas the figures to the right show two main types of common traditional wooden joints that are used in our thesis. Due to their locking mechanisms, a structural advantage is their ability to take forces in many different directions.

Focus on designing visual connections only made out of wood in public areas (floor plan 1 in residential building in Bältartäppan 7 ).

PROJECT FOCUS O N LY M A D E O U T O F W O O D

To put it in an real context, AIX Arkitekter together with Sweco AB let us work on their ongoing residential project in Borlänge, called Bältartäppan 7. Our challenge was to focus on two visible connections in open and public areas. The design goal was to display that the connections were made; only out of wood, to market the possibility of these as an architectural element as well as functional.

The first connection, C1, investigated is a glulam-glulam connection between a beam attached sideways to a pillar. These are the load-bearing slats inside the glass panes of the entrance halls.
