a conservatory of music, Cincinnati OH quarter • spring 2013 course • senior thesis studio duration • 30 weeks professor • Hank Hildebrandt Edson Cabalfin

details

A new college of music in Over The Rhine, Cincinnati, that addresses the high unemployment rate of young classical musicians. Instead of preparing students to be soloists, this institute would focus on small group collaboration opportunites. Students work together to create new music that combines all of their musical talents and can also provide unprecedented performance experience and income. The site is a currently abandoned church on Elm St., neighboring the Cincinnati Music Hall and Memorial Hall, and k-12 performing arts high school. The neighborhood is overflowing with artistic opportunities and the institute of music could flourish.

medium Revit Photoshop InDesign

In the past, most young conservatory musicians wanted to grow up to play as soloists or with major orchestras. Today, many classical musicians are forming bands instead, and struggle to fit in the traditional conservatory setting.

a chair for practicing Many musicians use folding chairs while they practice, which leads to poor posture and potential back issues. This musician’s chair addresses those issues, and is designed to be placed in a practice setting. The 1/2” felt weaves through the laser cut plywood seat and back, creating customizable and ample lumbar support. The felt can be weaved in various patterns for firmer or softer seat and back pad.
