DCMH Auxiliary donating a $5,000 check to the Hospital Foundation of Decatur County to support the hospital’s Mammography Assistance Program.
Saying ‘Ta-Ta’ to Breast Cancer On September 19, 168 ladies dressed in tutus, tiaras, technicolor socks, antlers and more took to North Branch Golf Course for the Hospital Foundation of Decatur County’s first “Tee-Off ‘Fore’ Ta-Tas” Goofy Golf Tournament. All were on hand to have fun, honor loved ones who have fought or who are fighting cancer, and raise money for Decatur County Memorial Hospital’s Mammogram Assistance Program. This fund covers the costs of important mammograms and some treatments for those who are uninsured or underinsured in our community. The evening opened with a “BRA-zaar” featuring local vendors, all of which donated a portion of their sales to the cause. Then, players took to their carts and tackled the challenging holes, honing their skills with tennis racquets, frying pans, hula-hoops, a bra sling-shot and more to put the ball into the cup. Cheers and laughing could be heard throughout the course during this stage, and the fun continued when the teams came in for dinner. A silent auction and raffle helped add to the occasion’s fundraising, and the event closed with the lighting and releasing of Chinese lanterns featuring personalized messages of love and support for survivors of cancer and those lost. It represented an inspiring ending to the comically enjoyable evening. The “Ta-Ta” Committee would like to thank the event sponsors: SIHO Insurance Services, Morning Breeze, WTRE 1330 AM, Tina Kramer’s The Learning GIFT and RBSK Partners PC. Equally, they would like to thank the Auxiliary of Decatur County Memorial Hospital for donating $5,000 to the Mammography Assistance Program, as well as all the other individuals, merchants and volunteers that made the occasion one to remember, and one to look forward to next year.
Because of all those who supported the “Ta-Ta” fundraiser this year, DCMH is able to provide mammograms to those in need. If you or someone you know has delayed getting an annual mammogram due to lack of funds, please contact the hospital’s radiology department at (812) 663-1157 to see if you qualify.
PATIENT TESTIMONIAL Hospital Employee Diagnosed with Cancer Knows Importance of Annual Mammogram Karen Sullivan has worked at Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) for 18 years and understands the importance of an annual mammogram for catching a small problem before it becomes a life-threatening problem. She always did the self-exam that is recommended and thought 2013 would be just another routine mammogram. Even so, she didn’t procrastinate. She scheduled her annual mammogram for January last year. Then came the surprise. Yes, there was a problem, although a small one. Dr. Barb Taylor, Radiologist at DCMH, let her know that they should do a second mammogram. Dr. Taylor showed Karen the pictures that, she said, looked like tiny metal specks. Karen was caught off guard. There is no family history of breast cancer in Karen’s family, but she knew that a family history accounts for only about 13 percent of breast cancers. Karen had a biopsy in January 2013, but some specks were still present following the procedure. For that reason, Dr. Brian Albers, her surgeon at DCMH, thought it was important to schedule a second biopsy. Following her second biopsy in the surgery department, Karen made the decision to

the risk of developing another breast cancer after several years. It also meant that Karen did not need radiation or chemotherapy.

schedule the appointment to have her left breast removed and reconstructed. Her decision to have breast reconstruction surgery was a personal one. Not everyone chooses that option. That decision meant a few more appointments with a plastic surgeon. In fact, insurance will often pay for reconstruction of the breast but it is important to check with the insurance company first. The good news, however, was that Karen had what appeared to be non-invasive cancer because it hadn’t spread into any surrounding breast tissue. It is what is referred to as ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS. This type of cancer isn’t life-threatening, but having that kind of breast cancer increases
Karen wants everyone to know that the Hospital Foundation of Decatur County supports the Mammography Assistance Program. This is especially for those without insurance. “No one should go without having a mammogram done yearly and that includes those who simply cannot afford it.” She said she knows that if she had not had a regular mammogram the cancer would have become much more advanced. By using funds that the Hospital Foundation has raised, DCMH can provide mammograms as well as any additional procedures that may be needed at little or no cost. Anyone who cannot afford a mammogram should apply for the assistance program by calling (812) 663-1157. So much more is known now than was known only a few years ago. One of many improvements is that women with dense breasts may need a different screening procedure. Breast density can be determined by the person who reads the mammogram. The mammography technician will be able to tell when the additional test might be necessary.
