The Library and Study Centre A guide to the services and facilities available
Resources Available Books We have a stock of over 25,000 books, covering all subjects. All books held in the Library are catalogued on our library management system and full details are available through the computer enquiry system. Book lists are available for each subject area, listing all current stock. Book lists are located on the shelves. If you need any help locating a particular book or subject area, please ask a member of staff at the counter as they can search the catalogue for you. A list of all recent additions to stock can be found at the front of the Library. The Library also has a vast reference collection, covering dictionaries, encyclopaedias, national statistics and web directories. We also have a range of DVDs.
Journals/Newspapers We currently subscribe to over 40 journals covering all subjects. A full list of titles is available. Current copies of titles are kept on the shelving at the front of the Library. Back copies can be found on the shelving below. In addition we receive 4 daily newspapers, weekly supplements and careers literature.
I.T. Facilities There are over 30 networked computers available; including 3 in the Silent Study Centre, each has access to the Internet and Word Processing programmes. To use a PC, you will need a username and password. Usage is based on a first come, first served basis. Laptops are also available for student use. The Library operates a Code of Conduct for PC usage. If it is neglected, access to the PCs will be restricted.
Printing/Photocopying Facilities 3 printers are available, giving you the option to print in black and white or colour. A small charge is made. A coin-operated photocopier is also available, allowing you to copy in black and white or colour. The photocopier allows enlarging, A4, A3 copying and double-sided copying. Acetates can also be used and are available from the shop.
Information Trays The Library has two sets of tray units which house resource material. The material includes leaflets and newspaper cuttings. A wide range of subjects are covered and the information is constantly updated.
Online Resources We subscribe to a selection of online resources, including Literature Online, Virtual Reference Library, Oxford English Dictionary Online and Education Image Gallery. All of these Online Resources are available in college and from home. Direct access is available from the College Intranet. For further information, ask a member of staff at the counter.
Liverpool University Library Carmel College students are also entitled to search and use the wide range of resources at Liverpool University Library. Access is restricted and subject to certain conditions. Please ask for more information. The College Intranet site also contains full details of all our resources and has direct links to a number of useful sites. Log on to find out more!
Resources Guide/Web Directory We have produced a wide range of help sheets and guides, aimed at helping you find the information you need. The helpsheets range from subject specific resource guides to a complete web directory. Please help yourself to any helpsheets situated around the Library.
Stationery Shop The Library operates a well-stocked and reasonably priced stationery shop. We sell everything from biros and A4 pads to calculators and revision packs. Price lists are situated around the Library; please ask at the counter if you wish to make a purchase. A wide selection of greetings cards are also available to buy. Binding and laminating services are also available.
Suggestions Box Library staff aim to provide all the resources and assistance you require to make your time at Carmel successful. However, if you feel there are gaps in our provision, why not let us know! A ‘Suggestions Box’ is situated at the back of the Library and we welcome any sensible suggestions you may have.
Code of Conduct The Library is provided for quiet study and purposeful learning. Please respect the needs of fellow students by working quietly and following our code of conduct: • Food & drink are not allowed at any time • Mobile phones should be turned off and kept in your bag at all times • Internet access is available to all students, however it must only be used for areas relevant to study • All users are responsible for materials borrowed in their name • Personal stereos must not be heard by others • Coats and bags must not be left on tables Library staff reserve the right to ask anyone not working appropriately to leave.

Sources of Help Study Centre Situated at the rear of the Library The Study Centre offers a silent working area and the assistance of the Study Support Tutors. They are available to provide help with any aspects of your studies – from planning revision to organising your folder. Their office is based at the back of the Study Centre.
Careers Information The College Career’s Service operates within the Library. It offers a wide range of University prospectuses, UCAS guides and information on general career choices and options. Information is also available on the latest job vacancies. Appointments with a careers advisor are made and attended in the Library. Ask at the counter for further information.
Joining/Borrowing/Renewing • All students are issued with a student I.D. card at the beginning of their course; this is also your library card. You must produce this card when wanting to borrow items. • You may borrow up to 4 books at any one time. Most books may be borrowed for 2 weeks - always check the label as some books are 3 day, 7 day loan or reference only. • A book can be renewed as often as needed - as long as another user hasn’t reserved it. Reservation requests can be made at the counter. When the book is available you will be notified via email or your personal tutor.
