Melissa’s Perspective Studying Business Studies is really interesting; it has not only taught me about the business world but I’ve also learned a lot about myself and it’s helped me to plan my future career. I work very hard and am really proud of what I have achieved so far. The lessons are often interactive which gets everyone involved and is a great way to make learning fun. Carmel also has fantastic facilities, which definitely makes studying easier. When I leave I hope to build upon the great foundations that Carmel has given me and have a successful career.

BTEC Level 3 Business Exam Board EDEXCEL Welcome to the BTEC Level 3 Business Department Business Studies is a fascinating subject that touches all of our lives either as an employee or an employer. BTEC Business is an exciting qualification that has been designed for students who love coursework and want to learn in a true vocational setting. BTEC Business links closely to the world of work and allows students to develop skills, knowledge and interest in a range of areas. The course is 100% coursework based and so relates well to producing business projects and completing tasks within a work-related setting. The courses that are offered at BTEC Level 3 are: • Certificate • Subsidiary Diploma • Diploma • Extended Diploma This will give you the flexibility to take other Advanced level subjects alongside your BTEC or specialise in Business as a subject.

All the tutors are 100% committed and have industry experience and so this brings the topics to life and they are able to share their experiences with the students. We look forward to welcoming you and working closely with you over the next two years. What will the course involve? The units you will study are all coursework units so there are no exams to be taken. You will cover topics such as looking at the Business Environment and the types of Ownership that businesses have. You will also study the Resources that businesses use. An example of this is the Human Resource and how people are recruited, selected, trained and managed. The course introduces you to all the Business functions of Marketing, Finance, Operations and looks at the external environment, for example the economy and social issues. The course includes theoretical elements, which will be taught to you by a tutor, practical activities and the production of your coursework. You must be self motivated and able to participate in team tasks as well as being able to work to strict deadlines.

During your time at Carmel College you will receive enormous amounts of support from a variety of different areas. Within the Business Department you will find staff who care about your progression at Carmel and that you both enjoy and succeed during your time with us. All of the department staff are willing to give you extra help and time to ensure you understand the subject and to provide you with support and advice. Our door is always open to students and you will find staff working with students at break and lunchtimes and after college to help them succeed. We pride ourselves on the success of our students and will always ‘go the extra mile’ to ensure you are proud of your success also. We find that many students come back to see us from university and they always say that their time at Carmel has really helped them prepare for their degree.

Thomas’ Perspective How will I be assessed?

Where does the course lead?

You will be internally assessed by producing portfolios of coursework. This in turn goes through a rigorous external quality system to ensure it has been assessed correctly. Producing coursework demands a lot of your time and you will be expected to spend study periods in college producing your coursework as well as time at home. The assessment for this course is continuous and lasts for two years.

The course will prepare you for many avenues, including University, an Apprenticeship or a Career. Many students continue to University to study Business or a particular aspect of Business such as Marketing. However there is also a vast array of Apprenticeships for example in team leading and management.

I enjoy studying Business because I have always had a passion for business and during the class discussions and coursework tasks I have a chance to talk about my knowledge of business and expand my knowledge. Business is a demanding subject but you will get a lot out of it. After Carmel I do not have any set plans but I would like to have a career in business.

Natalie’s Perspective Carmel has a welcoming vibe that really motivates students to enjoy their college experience. The tutors are always happy to help and really want students to succeed. Applied Business is allowing me to develop my knowledge of the business and economic world as well as giving me an insight into how businesses are run. Carmel has so many beneficial facilities for students, which have really impressed me. There’s a really encouraging atmosphere too. When I leave Carmel I hope to go on to study the Art Foundation course at the college and then progress onto university.

Frequently Asked Questions How does BTEC Business differ to AS Business Studies? BTEC Business is coursework based and therefore you need to really enjoy spending study time producing coursework. You will be expected to spend at least four hours per week outside college, working on your coursework per column of study. The grade for this work makes up all of the final course mark. BTEC Business students usually have a desire to either study Business at University or progress to a Business career after college. AS Business Studies is all exam assessed and has no coursework. What other A Levels complement BTEC Business?

Is the course an A Level? It is Advanced Level standard but is not an A Level. However, BTEC Business is exactly the same as any other Advanced Level qualification and carries the same UCAS points for university. It is welcomed in the world of work as you will develop so many vocational skills such as communication and problem solving. What are the entry requirements for BTEC Business? You will need CC in Applied Business/ C in Business Studies/ C in Business Communications (if studied) and grade Cs in GCSE Maths and English Language.

There are no forbidden combinations of subjects and so we encourage you to choose subjects that you will achieve in and are motivated to study. You are discouraged from doing another coursework based subject due to the amount of coursework involved. Subjects that are popular are ICT, Law and Languages.
