Kate’s Perspective EPQ has really helped me in various different ways, the fact that I had to plan and do everything myself was quite a shock but it showed me what to expect at university. Studying EPQ gave me something to talk about during my interviews for veterinary medicine as I gained a wide base of knowledge of the subject area I want to work in. I would recommend EPQ to anyone who is serious about the subject they want to study at university in order to get a little background knowledge that perhaps will make you stand out from other candidates and to see if that subject is actually for you.
Extended Project Exam Board AQA You will have the opportunity to choose an area of research you want to study. You complete a logbook to document the process and the decisions you have made along the way. You plan, research and carry out your project and then prepare a presentation to share the outcomes. Along the way you are supported by your supervisor who will advise you and act as a sounding board but you make the decisions, justify them and then evaluate the whole learning experience at the end. You will become a more critical, reflective and independent learner. The finished product can take a variety of forms such as a traditional dissertation but really it is only limited by your imagination.
Jacinta’s Perspective The Extended Project really gave me the opportunity to prepare myself for university. By independently researching a project and carrying out tests, it increased my academic skills for the future, and increased my chances of getting into university! I took part in the Catenian Speaking Competition, for which I researched and developed statistics for my speech: ‘Is 66 too old to give birth?’ I came first, and my independent research really helped me plan my Extended Project and revision skills. At Carmel the teachers are really encouraging and motivating to help you get the most out of your time here.
Universities look very favourably on EPQ as they know it develops the higher level skills they are looking for and some of our Carmel students have had offers for medicine, veterinary science and from Oxford, for example, and feel that the EPQ really gave them a distinct advantage in their personal statements and at interview. The EPQ also attracts UCAS points.

EPQ is also an excellent option for you if you simply have a passion for a certain field and would relish the opportunity of spending time indulging in researching a topic of your choice. How will I be assessed? To complete the course you need to submit a product, which is based on your research, a production log which has recorded the experience and a presentation.
