Jemma’s Perspective What I enjoy about Carmel is the adult atmosphere. You are responsible for your own work, files and organisation, which helps you to prepare for university and employment. You also have more independence and free time throughout the day to study. My PE lessons are very enjoyable; during theory lessons we do a lot of practical games, presentations and activities to help with learning the subject. The PE staff are very helpful and offer tutorials in case you don’t understand a certain topic. My enrichment activity is netball which enables me to take part in the college netball team and to play matches on a Wednesday afternoon. It also provides more time to practice netball for the practical aspect of PE.
AS/A2 Physical Education Exam Board OCR What will I study?
How will I be assessed?
On completing the course you will have specialised in two of your favoured sports and developed the skills required to improve your performance, this improvement is part of your assessment. The theory component develops a range of skills involving: the study of physiological aspects e.g. anatomy and exercise physiology; some psychological aspects e.g. motivation and arousal; and also sociological aspects which include issues such as discrimination, sponsorship and the roles of the sporting bodies that contribute to sporting success in Britain.
Your practical skills will be continually assessed as part of your coursework with a formal assessment made at the end of the module. At AS Level you will be expected to verbally analyse performance and develop a programme for improvement while at A2 Level, this element will include links with classroom theory.
Each week you will have a practical session and three theory sessions where you will be expected to make links between how the theory complements the practical performance i.e. how does knowledge of the theory make me a better performer? Every opportunity is used to illustrate the theory through relating it in a practical situation and you will be involved in group work and individual situations which are used to highlight and reinforce topics from the classroom.
The coursework comprises 40% of the total marks with the remaining 60% being assessed by one exam at the end of each year. The exam is made up of short style questions and 3 extended essays, one from each area of the syllabus. In completing the coursework module, you will have acquired confidence in your communication skills and in your ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations. Where does this course lead? Approximately half of our PE students go on to Higher Education to carry on with sport related degree courses ranging from teaching to sport science or sport development. Physiotherapy has also been a popular avenue to follow. The remaining 50% have used their A Level in PE to go on to enter other degree courses spanning as wide a field as medicine to accountancy.

BTEC Level 3 National Award in Sport Exam Board EDEXCEL The BTEC National in Sport provides learners with a vocational course that combines theory with practical methods of learning in a range of different units. It gives you an insight into the sector and is an excellent route for learners looking to build a career in sport. The qualification provides opportunities for learners to focus on the development of personal, learning and thinking skills, functional skills, and wider skills in a sport context, such as environmental issues and health and safety considerations. The BTEC is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed for progression into employment or further educational opportunities. You will study the core concepts common to all the Nationals in Sport but will also study other areas that are key to the study of sports performance. You will mainly be assessed through coursework assignments and projects which are based on
realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. Some of these will involve visits to outside agencies and seminars from experienced practitioners who are currently working in the sporting world. As the course does not involve examination work, students will be expected to develop independent study skills and meet coursework deadlines.
Ski Trip 2011
Carmel has a friendly and positive atmosphere. I enjoy all my subjects, especially PE, as the lessons are fun and the practical teaching methods have improved my learning. There is a good atmosphere in lessons amongst the students and also with the teachers who provide a high standard of teaching and professionalism. Carmel prepares you for university and later life through careers talks and advice, the Gifted and Talented programme, and study days including visits to university. There are many different enrichment activities you can take part in, mine is the football team which is really good to be part of as I have made some new friends and improved my football and teamwork skills. When I leave, I hope to have achieved the grades to get into a good university and study PE or Maths whilst also continuing to play sport at university.

How will I enrich my studies? All sport students are expected to get involved with the Enrichment Programme and in particular the sporting opportunities on offer through this programme. The range of activities available is extensive from the more recreational, available throughout the week by way of clubs e.g. Basketball or Badminton to the competitive fixtures played every Wednesday in Rugby, Football and Netball as part of the North West Colleges sports league. The department also runs an annual ski trip where students can take the opportunity to use this activity as part of their assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions What are the entry requirements for these subjects? You will need to have a GCSE grade C in PE or a Merit in BTEC Sport (if you have not studied these, you must be participating in a sport on a regular basis) plus GCSE grade C in both English Language and Science. How good do I have to be practically? It is a requirement that you practice sport on a regular basis. You don’t have to be a world beater but you must be a regular participant in your main sport and at least competent in your second. What sports are assessed? You can be assessed in individual sports, team sports or outdoor adventurous activities. For minority sports such as Golf, Basketball or Cricket and any others, you should be undertaking these out of college as member of a club and you will then be considered for assessment based on the skills you’re developing out of college. How successful are Carmel’s students? Students have done well over an extended period with pass rates
being above the national average at over 97% in seven out of the last eight years, with 100% in 2011. In addition to the excellent grades, sporting excellence is also well represented. In 2010, Carmel’s Netball team won the British Colleges North West Plate; the Rugby team won the Student Rugby League Plate and the Football second team were finalists in the North West U19’s competition. There are many individual achievements too: in rugby, Paul Clough who left Carmel in 2006 is now firmly established in the St Helens RLFC line-up and fulfilling his undoubted potential; upper sixth student Bobbie Goulding has been selected for England U18’s rugby league and no doubt hopes to follow in the footsteps of his illustrious father; Kathryn Sumner is an aspiring Hammer Thrower who is second in the North West having recently thrown a Personal Best; Sophie Foo continues to progress in the world of Fencing and is in the top 100 nationally; and several up and coming rugby league stars who have already signed for pro clubs – Alex Clare, Connor Dwyer and Lewis Whitty.
