disaster relief Concept:

It is the basis of a well written story, that describes a vivid chain of events. This process describes a transformative change that relies on the past to inform the present and impact the future. The story created by these trials produces an inspiring chronicle that illustrates how one event can influence another. A narrative is the essence of this storytelling process, which is used to connect seemingly unimportant occurrences into a larger, complex story.

Programming:

Through the use of multiple iterations of adjacency and bubble diagrams, the project calls for the easy accessibility by the residents and facility volunteers. The final diagram improves upon the necessity for the resident’s easy access to necessary amenities such as restroom and shower facilities. Also through research it was learned that one crucial piece of program is the need for a large amount of storage along with relief drop-off locations being on the exterior.

4

Unit Design:

All of the spaces in this project are designed to fit on a semi-truck for easy and quick mobility. The average sizes of a semi-truck container is 8’w x 20’l , 8’w x 40’l. Each unit has structural cables for added stability. The exterior walls have the ability to be removed and joined to other units to create larger areas.

Fabric

Nanofabric

Nanofabric:

It has the ability to be a soft, flexible fabric, but then when an electric current passes through it, the material turns hard, and visa versa. The project utilizes this nanomaterial as the exterior shell of the container units. This material allows for the units to be easily collapsed and transported and then easily set-up. Along with this the material allows for the design to be reusable and therefore sustainable.

retail Challenge:

Using the provided building shell of the historic L.N. Gross Building in downtown Kent, Ohio develop a retail design. Interview and receive feedback from the client to incorporate into the design. Select a recognized retailer chain that fits community needs and use branding techniques in the space. Complete a set of construction documents and casework model per project specifications. With focus on concept, brand, fixture detailing, lighting, functionality and code standards.

Concept:

Using the ideas of natural phenomena this project is inspired by the systems present in trees. Through research it is discovered that a tree consists of one whole system connecting the roots, through the trunk to the leaves and this network that carries nutrients and life to the tree is what led to the concepts of networking, connections and layering. These concepts will drive the design through the forms selected and through the use of materials to demonstrate these themes.

6

Innovative Design:

To create a space that ties to the concept of networking and connections while still celebration the historical aspects of the space was a challenge. This challenge was met with the solution of low, interlocking display tables, that allowed for good light and sight-lines throughout the space. To create connections in the space all of the displays line up with one another and the lines created by the store front alcove design, making the space one connected system.

Space Plan:

With not being able to touch to front face of the historic structure and having multiple tenants in the building the project called for a mullioned curtain wall using the existing window grid as inspiration to allow light into the space. The lower portion of the building is dedicated to employees and product storage including and employee entrance, manager’s offices, secure storage, kitchen, lounge and employee restroom.

The Use of Glass:

The existing building was a main influence on the use of glass in the space. Having the opportunity to design in a building such as this I believe the structure should be celebrated. With this in mind, the main glass feature is the store front entrance, this focal point is designed with rectangular window mullions that are 2 times proportional to the existing windows on the facing exterior wall. This use of patterning creates a connection with the building so that the interior and exterior meet in this way.

8

Lighting Design:

With the abundance of natural light throughout the day the design calls for transitional lighting that will be able to work at night as well. The space includes, general lighting, task lighting over the check out counter and in the employee areas and spotlighting for products. The brand aesthetic calls for edison bulbs and minimalist luminaries throughout the space as well. The color temperature of these lights are 5000K with a color rendering index of 90 to optimize the product viewing.

office design Challenge:

To take part in the 2016 IIDA Student Design Competition to create a “Social Station co-working space that integrates both social retail, and a highfunction co-working space located in Dallas, Texas. With an existing floorplan provided, the innovative design must take into account work space, meeting space, lounge space, a variety of touchdown areas and the ability, after 5:00pm to transform into a popup retail venue in under two hours. Also required is to use OFS Brands furniture and the use of Visual Magnetics signage and technology.

Concept:

A metamorphosis describes the gradual change from one state to another. Through interactions with other people’s perspectives, ideas change over time evolving into solid articulate forms. The impression that abstract notions, when joined with others can create concrete ideas, is the basis of this design concept. This concept will be shown through creating collaborative spaces where ideas can be shared and evolve. This concept of an idea metamorphosis, is driven by the human aspect of individual workers of different disciplines, being brought together to share their knowledge and create new and innovative ideas.

Programming:

For placing program elements in the space, all individual workstations are place on the perimeter allowing light from exterior walls, as well as representing the outer shell of the geode where individual ideas are still forming. To create a focus on the collaboration of ideas, the center of the space includes collaboration spaces, conference room which represents the center, crystalline part of the geode stone. This theme continues through out the space with a large portion of space being dedicated to community areas for workers to come together and share their ideas and knowledge.

Being inspired by the notion of ideas coming together just as minerals come together to form a geode, the project calls for a way to delineate collaboration spaces from individual work areas.

A Flexible Environment:

Creating an environment where ideas can be shared allows for the opportunity to design a flexible space for different brands to come and show their designs and products creating a space where designers and the public can interact in a pop-up retail environment in the evenings. Using the office lunchroom as a flexible spaces allows for the use of food services through the commercial kitchen to be provided as well as creating a large, open, flexible space for brands to manipulate to fit their products needs.

health clinic Challenge:

To develop a new health and wellness design concept for future Kroger Marketplace stores. The project is a representation of the emerging trend of delivering a specific portion of health and wellness services in an established retail entity. Create a design that is a departure from the current Kroger design aesthetic. Promoting a sense of adventure and uplifting customers while being edgy and unique. Create a custom, customer orientation feature that introduces the customer to the space.

Branding:

The main focus for the client’s brand is to create a completely new, and innovative design for their Total Health sector. Through feedback given by the Kroger company, they request a space that is not only functional, but pushes the boundaries of what contemporary in-store pharmacy and clinic design have been. Creating a brand that is modern and timeless, while reaching a wide demographic and aligning to the company’s values based on loyalty, health education, and good value influenced the concept, design solutions and color palette of this health clinic design.

Concept:

Influenced by the idea of a healthy lifestyle where all aspects of a person’s life are combined around health and wellness, the flowing of ideas becomes integral. The wave form creates a sense of connection between ideas seemingly not in the same plane or line, of thought. This free flowing of ideas and information creates a modern, unparalleled experience that ignites curiosity and educates, while being low cost, and convenient.

Inspiration:

Inspired by the idea of flowing information and modern design aesthetics, the forms which influence the design show movement and continuity. These forms also reflect the lightness and transparency that evolves when information flows freely which ultimately drives the inspiration as well. Images such as these inspire the use of vertical space to create unparalleled experiences for the viewer.

Circulation:

1

The circulation of the space while needing to be functional also through innovative solutions aligns with the overall concept of different aspects of life coming together to center around health and wellness. The routes created throughout the design begin at the customer orientation feature and pivots from that point. Through the use of displays and partition walls the circulation achieved, flows through all of the differing program elements creating a connection.

Materials:

The materials chosen for this design create a modern and simple aesthetic allowing for a calming and hygienic space. Such as with the use of concrete as the flooring material to allow for easy cleaning ability and strong resistance to wear and adding slip resistant coatings. Also using the elements of paint that are anti-microbial and anti mold and mildew to create a hygienic space. Choosing to impact the space with varying shades of blue allows for different feelings throughout the space.

13

Displays and Wayfinding:

Allowing for a modern minimalist feel without losing function is the main driver behind the display and wayfinding design. The custom curved product displays create circulation paths throughout the space. Along with the use of glass partition walls low tables are placed along them for safety precautions. The client’s request of creating a social media image worthy space inspired the design of low product display bowls that could allow for product photography.

14

Signage:

Throughout the space, the signage is very important in order to delineate the different spaces. Signage using a vertical, rectilinear font, creates a tasteful alternative to the curved space design. This signage creates a sense of height throughout the design by utilizing its verticallity. The curved form cutout within the different signage ties into the fixture and circulation planning, and is designed to connect all aspects of the space together.

15

restaurant Challenge:

Develop a 12,000 square foot, two story high-end restaurant given an existing building shell. Considering where the kitchen space is to be no less than 1/3 of the overall space and the second floor is to be no more than 1/2 the first floor square foot. Along with this, the space should comply with all ADA requirements. Research is to be done and all spaces are to be complaint with the International Building Code. There is to be required a selected concept, which is influenced by an international culture.

Concept:

The concept of this restaurant is thought. Within thought there are many different layers to a person’s thinking and there are many different layers of experiences that can influence how a person sees the world. With this in mind, the culture of India was chosen as the inspiration for the food and color scheme because of the layering of spices and flavors in the country’s cuisine. Using the idea of different experiences influencing how one sees the world, the design will display techniques of layering throughout the space especially in ways that impact the inhabitants’ perspective and spacial experience.

16

Inspiration:

The project calls for the vibrant colors and the culture of India because just like this country so too, our thoughts can be seen as vibrant. Along with India, inspiration for this project comes from the technique of colored glass. This modern material allows light to pass through it, however once it passes through, the light’s color is changed, so too our thoughts change because of our experiences.

Space Plan (1st floor)

Space Plan (2nd floor)

Space Plan:

As we journey through life, human beings gather more experiences that influence the way we look and see the world. This notion influences the space planning of the project. On the first floor, it is an open concept allowing for easy sight-lines with step levels rising and receding back into the space and ramps along the two main aisle ways for ADA access. Continuing into the space to the second floor is the bar area at the back of the restaurant that can be opened after hours with its own dedicated kitchen. This space is placed in the back of the structure to represent the darker thoughts humans have after having many different experiences.
