Scholarships
Scholarships, Exhibitions & Remissions Christ College offers scholarships and exhibitions to recognise academic, artistic, musical, sporting and all-round talent. Scholarships and exhibitions are available for entry at 11+, 13+ (for new entrants only) and 16+. Usually awards are between10% and 20% but exceptionally they can be up to 50% of full fees and are competed for openly on pre-announced dates. Sixth form awards are available to existing year 11 pupils. Parents of such internal candidates should contact the Deputy Head Academic for advice on the suitability of their child for an award.

Financial assistance is available in case of financial hardship. These are subject to means-testing and are reviewed annually. A successful candidate for a Scholarship or Exhibition may also apply for financial assistance. The overall percentage of fee remission will depend on a means test. In principle, it is expected that an award will be held for the duration a pupil is at school. Awards, however, are regularly reviewed to ensure a pupil is performing at the level expected. If a question is raised about a scholar’s effort or contribution the Head will write to the parents for further discussion. In Year 8 if an Alway Scholarship holder is unsuccessful in converting their award the value will be converted to a Head’s Award. Those in receipt of Scholarships and Financial Assistance are expected to remain at Christ College throughout their secondary education. The awards described are competitive. Sixth Form candidates must be under 17 years of age, senior candidates under 14 and junior candidates under 12 on the 1st September in the year of entry. The value of each scholarship is a percentage of the overall school fee. Pupils seeking to join the school in Year 7 are eligible to apply for the Academic or Alway Scholarship. This includes pupils transferring from St Nicholas House. We do not award specific scholarships in Sport, Music, Drama or Art at this stage. Candidates who show specific aptitudes in Music or Sport can apply for the Alway Scholarship. In Year 8 all holders of the Alway Scholarship should re-apply for specific scholarships in Music or Sport. External candidates are eligible to apply for all awards for entry into Year 9.

Scholarship Assessments ACADEMIC Christ College awards academic scholarships at 11+, 13+ and the sixth form. These scholarships recognise outstanding academic ability and potential. At all levels, a scholarship award carries with it the expectation that the scholar will work diligently and set a good example to others. At 11+, academic scholarships are awarded following the Scholarship examinations in January. To achieve an award, the pupil needs to achieve very high standards in the written test papers of an hour in length in English and Maths. In addition, the Head and Deputy Head Academic interview candidates to test their ability to think quickly and handle complex ideas. Good performance in the non-verbal reasoning test is also a contributory factor to an award. There is no fixed number of academic scholarships awarded at this level although in a typical year about three would be usual. The school also awards academic exhibitions for excellent performance just below scholarship level. At 13+, the same criteria as above apply although the written papers in English and Maths are more demanding. 4
SCIENCE In addition to an academic award, candidates for the sixth form can apply for a Science Scholarship. The criteria for this award are: Sixth Form: a very good performance in the Science Scholarship Paper In the Sixth Form, scholarships are awarded based on an academic paper, interview, school report and predicted or achieved grades. Successful scholarship candidates will have mainly */As (9 to 7) at GCSE and be looking for entry to demanding courses at top universities.

11+ AND 13+ SCHOLARSHIP Criteria for awards To be awarded an academic scholarship at Christ College the pupil should:

Perform very strongly in the entrance test i.e. achieve over 80% in the Maths and English papers at junior scholarship level and 75% at Senior scholarship;

Considering school reports and any other related information Interview.
Be highly motivated, disciplined and ambitious in academic work; and Show consistency of high achievement over all aspects of the scholarship process or exceptional ability in one academic area such as Maths. 6
ART EXHIBITION
ALL-ROUNDER AWARD
Applicants can apply for an exhibition in Art at 13+ or Sixth Form entry. At 13+ candidates will complete a short practical test under the supervision of the Head of Art. Candidates should bring a portfolio of work for scrutiny and will have an interview with the Head of Art. Sixth Form candidates should be predicted a 9/8 in Art GCSE or related subject. Candidates applying for an award at 13+ must study Art to GCSE.
For our All-rounder Award we are looking for someone with potential to contribute to a number of important areas of school life. At 13+ we would expect strong academic performance plus contributions to at least two of the following: sport, music, drama and art. At 11+ sport and music. In addition, we are looking for leadership potential. Awards will be based on academic tests and two or more specific assessments (see Music, Sports, Art exhibitions), school references and an impressive performance at interview.
Candidates should demonstrate outstanding ability and potential in one or more areas of Art.

DRAMA EXHIBITION This award is available at 13+ (external candidates) and Sixth Form. The Drama exhibition will offer students: Active support from the Head of Drama both in academic drama and in pursuing theatrical ambitions. Opportunities to participate in school drama and to learn leadership within Christ College Drama productions. One-to-one support with any drama school applications. Participation in drama workshops and masterclasses. Speech and Drama lessons that lead to LAMDA qualifications. We are looking for students who: Can show evidence of a passion for theatre, including performance, technical aspects and enjoyment of watching theatrical productions.
In order to apply for the Drama Scholarship candidates should produce a 1 page CV outlining achievements and participation in drama and one or more references from a teacher/director/course organiser.
Have the potential and ambition to develop as an actor/contributor to theatrical productions. Show commitment to involvement in school drama both inside and outside the classroom.
There will be an audition, to include one prepared piece of the candidate's choice, lasting no more than 2 minutes, and a discussion with the Head of Drama and Director of Performing Arts.
Demonstrate an intention to study drama and to participate and lead in school drama.

MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS Music Scholarships are available at 13+ and Sixth Form to candidates showing special promise in music and include both free instrumental tuition and remission of fees. Music Exhibitions provide free tuition in one instrument. Candidates would normally be expected to study Music to GCSE. Free tuition remains throughout a scholar’s time at Christ College, although it is subject to annual review.
Sight reading Playing by ear In addition there will be an opportunity to talk about past experiences and future musical aspirations. This provides an opening for candidates to demonstrate their enthusiasm for music and to show how it is already a significant part of their life.
The audition will last from 20 - 30 minutes and candidates should prepare:
A warm-up room is provided and parents are welcome to remain in the Music School during the audition. We are happy to accompany at the piano, but candidates are equally welcome to bring their own accompanist if they so wish.
One or two contrasting pieces on their main instrument One piece on any second instrument
Please bring a copy of any piano accompaniment with you or, for more demanding parts, please send a copy to the school (for the attention of the Director of Music) beforehand. Music stands are provided; candidates may wish to bring their own footstools, T-squares or other specialist equipment.
One song if they wish to offer singing Candidates will be assessed also in unprepared performance: Simple aural tests, clapping rhythms, singing, humming or whistling a melody, identification of notes in a chord, general recognition of musical detail

Preference will normally be given to those involved in the School’s representational games. Award holders will be expected to be good ambassadors and to demonstrate a willingness to contribute fully to the sporting and general life of the school.
SPORTS AWARDS These are offered annually at 13+ (external candidates) and 16+. Parents of pupils in Year 11 who wish their child to be considered for a Sports Award are encouraged to seek advice from the Director of Sport before submitting an application. Sport Awards are worth between 10% and 20% of the school fees. There is no expectation to study PE at GCSE or A level to hold a Sports Award.
Process Candidates are asked, prior to the assessment day, to provide a brief sporting Curriculum Vitae outlining their achievements to date and a written reference (from a club or county coach or Head of PE, for example).
Criteria Sports Awards are open to boys and girls from any school. We are looking for pupils who meet the normal academic requirements of the school but who also demonstrate outstanding sporting ability, potential, determination and enthusiasm. Successful candidates are likely to be of county standard or above in at least one sport. They will also respond well to guidance, work well in a team and demonstrate good leadership skills, whether by example or captaincy.
The assessment will consist of the following: A series of physical tests, for example for speed and agility An interview with a member of the games staff to discuss the sporting CV and ambitions of the candidate An interview with the Head Academic entrance tests
Sports Award holders should have exceptional talent in one or more sports, normally at least two. 12
OUTDOOR ADVENTURE SCHOLARSHIPS Applicants will be invited to the next available scholarship assessment day. At the Assessment Day, applicants will: • Complete entrance assessments • Take part in a challenge based activity • Have an interview with the Head • Have an interview with Director of Outdoor Education to discuss your outdoor CV and ambitions
