SUMMER CAMP 2020 Sunday 2nd August - Friday 14th August
Christ College Brecon was founded in 1541 and is one of the oldest schools in Wales. Situated in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park, the school has a wealth of experience in hosting international students and running summer activities in a safe, secure and beautiful environment. Our international summer camp will give girls and boys aged 10 to 16 the opportunity to experience life in a foreign country where they can learn or improve their English and also take part in a wide range of adventure, sporting and cultural activities. Located close to mountains, lakes and rivers, the summer camp is the perfect opportunity for children to learn new skills and enjoy a great adventure, all while speaking English in a school steeped in history.
Programme Overview Formal Tuition The course is delivered by qualified teachers and is designed for fluent English speakers as well as those for whom English is a second language. Students are asked to choose one of the subjects below.
TUITION CHOICES English Language (EAL) Classes of 8-10 children will be grouped according to ability and English language tuition will focus on teaching students to express their thoughts and ideas in English and to respond to English speakers. Advanced English (EAL) An opportunity for advanced English speakers to improve even further both written and oral proficiency. English & Welsh Literature Students will be introduced to a range of leading English and Welsh writers and will discuss various well known texts. This course is suitable for students with a good command of the English Language. British History Students will learn the basics of British history and our island story including major historical events and significant people. Creative Writing An opportunity for advanced English speakers to explore writing creatively through fiction and poetry.
Adventure, Sport & Recreational Activities The course is designed for children to thrive in a new environment, make friends, work in teams and enjoy new challenges. The camp offers a wide range of activities to suit all tastes and interests.
Sport Sports coaches will be leading team based games in traditional sports as well as frisbee golf, orienteering, bush craft, dodgeball and capture the flag. Adventure Activities The Brecon Beacons National Park is one of the premier locations in the UK to enjoy a wide range of adventurous activities such as gorge walking, rock climbing, canoeing, raft building and abseiling.
The Natural World We will be maximising the location of Christ College and introducing students to the natural world through practical study and field trips. British Culture Students will be introduced to aspects of British culture including British cuisine, art, theatre, music and fashion. Day Visits Two full day trips are planned to Oxford and Cardiff for students to tour and enjoy these historic cities.
Accommodation & Pastoral Care Our aim is for everyone to enjoy a fantastic summer experience in a warm and caring environment. Students will stay in comfortable boarding houses, each with their own common areas for relaxation. They will be looked after by male and female Group Leaders as well as resident Team Leads. Each student will be assigned to a House Tutor who will be responsible for the student’s well-being during the camp. Meals All food preferences will be catered for through a diverse range of British and international well-balanced cuisine, all of which will be served in our historic Dining Hall.
