Christ College Brecon

Invitational Rugby Sevens

celebrating 100 years of Welsh Senior Schools and Colleges Rugby Union

11th February 2024 Sponsored by

Welcome On behalf of the College I would like to welcome all those attending today’s Sevens tournament as players, coaches and spectators. I look forward to watching some excellent sport as ever and hope that you will enjoy the customary warm welcome of the Christ College community.

commitment not only of the players but of the coaches and also, less often noticed, of the referees whose thankless task is to dispense justice tempered by mercy to impassioned and determined players. I am hugely grateful to the members of the Society of Friends of Christ College Brecon, who are providing refreshments today and ensuring that hot drinks are available to warm us up!

We have once again gathered teams from all over the country and from some of the best rugby playing schools. The format of the competition is such that on the majority of occasions the side universally held to be the strongest has won on the day and it will be interesting to see if this pattern is repeated this year.

Our gratitude is also due to our sponsors, supporters and our friends who continue to support Christ College in numerous ways. The services have a proud tradition of excellence and depth in rugby and it is a privilege to be associated with this fantastic game.

What is certain to be repeated is the tournament’s tradition of a high standard of skill, good sportsmanship and a happy balance of camaraderie and rivalry. Many people have to work hard to make such an event happen and I would like to commend the

Wales is a great place to be if you love rugby and I hope today will be a true celebration of the principality’s favourite game. Gareth Pearson Head

The Welsh Senior Schools and Colleges Rugby Union The playing season of 2023 is the centenary of the Welsh Senior Schools and Colleges Rugby Union. The first matches were played against France Schools and Yorkshire schools in April 1923, as the English Schools Union had not been formed at that time. During its 100 years the name of the Union has had a couple of changes, in 1923 it was called the Welsh Secondary Schools Rugby Union, in 1983 it became the Welsh Schools Rugby Union (Senior Group) and in 2019 the name changed to the current title Welsh Senior Schools and Colleges Rugby Union. The Union, as well as running all the schools’ competitions, also ran the Welsh Schools Under 18 international team, playing against all the home countries. The Welsh Schools were the first International schools’ team to travel to South Africa in 1958, Clive Rowlands was one of the schoolboys on that tour. The Welsh Schools were the first Welsh International team (Mens or Youth) to beat New Zealand in their home country. Scott Quinell was one of the players on that tour. In 2004, all the home

unions took over their under 18 school sides and set them up as WRU Under 18’s, RFU under 18’s etc. We now run all the Senior School and Colleges League and Knock out competitions. The League program consists of the West and East Premier leagues, and a 2nd tier league in each county or district. The winners of the West and East Premier leagues play in a final for the captain Bleddyn James memorial Trophy. In the Knockout competitions, the top 32 teams play in the Cup Competition with the losers of the first-round progressing to the Plate competition. All the other schools play the Vase Competitions and the first-round losers progress to the Bowl competition. The finals of these KO competitions are played on the school’s day at the Principality Stadium every April. We are delighted that we can celebrate 100 years of Welsh Schools rugby here at Christ College Brecon today who themselves have a proud rugby history. Good luck to all of the players and teams in involved today, we wish you every success.
