SHARJAH MEDIA CENTER FALL 2017

In this project we were asked to design a media center in Sharjah. The concept behind the projects was taken from the alley ways in the site thinking about it as the “Freej�, which is a cultural concept of the neighborhood in the UAE. Houses are placed next to each other with narrow walking paths, sometimes they are open to the sky or through a building. We designed the project as the first three floors are retails connected through an exterior loop that acts as the circulation. However, the upper levels are semi-private with the office building and media offices. On the side is the theater as an individual element that has a different program. In this project we were asked as partners to design a Maritime museum in Al-Jaddaf, Dubai, UAE. The site was a new experience to us, where we had to design and work according to water conditions beside the big sizes of exhibits (Boats). This studio was a comprehensive one. FALL 2016

San Francisco Golden Gate park is known for its hills and its leveled landscape; drawing from this, the concept behind the project focuses on constructing the project as a form of retaining wall that separates the natural landscape behind from the terraced, man-made landscape in front. Apart from being conceptually driven by the site, the project design is also formally driven by the streets on site as its programs are divided into four perspectives that follow the street’s vanishing point. From the street, the project appears to the user as a continuous line, broken up when a level change occurs, that eventually vanishes into the landscape. Instructor: George Newlands

Introduction to design as a parametric process with an exploration of iterations through subtle changes in elements prior to locking elements in place resulting in a compelling composition. Celestial Cupola is a modern day response to the scarcity of social congregation spaces that allow for contemplation in the fast paced urban environment of the United Arab Emirates. The project attempts to reference past Bedouin navigation techniques where there was a dependence on celestial bodies such as the moon and the stars to guide the voyagers to their destination. The Celestial Cupola allows for the re-interpretation of the obsolete technique of following the stars, with an observational shelter that is constructed out of a steel structure which supports a fabric skin. The skin incorporates apertures that allow for visual access to track the full-moon cycle for the year of 2017. The intent of the project is to provide a respite from the active nature of our present surrounding environment, through isolating the spectators inside the Cupola for a frozen moment in time.
