NEXT STEELCASE SPONSORED OFFICE Fourth Year | 7 Weeks |17,00 sq. ft

Concept Both NEXT and scholar’s rocks are founded on the idea of ‘essence.’ “The most prized ‘bones of the earth’ were created by water or wind carving away the geological structure until only the essence is left behind” - Donna Dodson NEXT values the essence of makeup with its vegan, sustainable, and irritation free formulas. New York City is a melting pot of different cultures and scholar’s rocks are a part of NEXT owner’s Korean culture. Scholar rocks are the connection between NYC and NEXT.

APPLIED CONCEPT

Parti

The asymmetrical balance, carved features, the flow and twist of the scholar rock all contribute to the aesthetic and functional aspects of NEXT’s office space. Scholar’s rocks are meant to inspire people and make viewers imagine the rock at different scales such as a riverbed, field, or a mountain range. Materials and patterns using different scales are used to represent this quality. These materials mimic stone textures.

7

SCALE + COLORS

Scholar rocks resemble natural landscapes. Landscapes can be viewed at different scales; a mountain range, a forest, water, and even down to the smallest stones. Each space in NEXT is informed by this scale.

MATERIALS

When viewed from afar or on a small scale, the materials act as textures that mimic the stones.

At a closer look, the materials reveal images and objects which make up these textures and represent scholar’s rocks at different scales.

Residential Units Path Common Areas

Concept Statement A harbor provides safe anchorage and protection for those who pass through it. The residential units that wrap around the building act as a breakwater which creates the calm environment within a harbor. This serves as a transition for veterans who are looking for a break from the stress of civilian life. The balcony surrounding these units reinforces the barrier which protects the shared spaces within the building. Just as an anchor keeps ships secure, the furniture, materials, and colors are lighter on top and heavier on the bottom to ground the users of the space.

Circulation Paths

16

The circulation paths are wide to accommodate social distancing and seating on either side of the pathway creates an opportunity for neighbors to safely socialize. Sanitation stations are located throughout the space to encourage cleanliness.

Social Sustainability Spaces such as the social lounges and the courtyard encourage community members to socialize both outside and inside. The open concept allows for different areas to blend together which helps foster connections amongst users. The pathways let users choose what they want to do putting them in control of their own experience.

Courtyard Sketch

Research Backed Design Decisions Wide pathways and rounded corners are utilized throughout the space to provide strong sight-lines and alleviate stress caused by way finding. The balcony and walkway envelop the space to encourage movement. The pathway leads to a second floor gym where veterans can exercise and improve their mental health. Courtyard Perspective

STRØMME MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SPA Fourth Year | 6 Weeks | 5,000 sq. ft

Concept Viking ships were built to be strong and flexible. They had to balance their loads, push through water, and flow with the wind. Similarly, those with Multiple Sclerosis must be strong and flexible to withstand the ups and downs of the disease. They have to balance what their life was before diagnosis and what their future will be, push through day to day activities, and flow with the unpredictability of MS. Strømme, which translates from Norwegian to ‘flow,’ creates a space that those with MS can relate to, rest, and connect with the rich history of Norway. Contrast between organic and geometric forms on viking ships inform visual contrast in the spa for those with vision impairments. Blues, inspired by the fjord, help users perceive the space as colder than it really is to combat the warmth that MS patients often experience. Pops of red are used for contrast. Located in Grefsen - a small borough with a population of 4,350, nestled between Oslo and the mountains - allows users to walk around town for their errands, visit the capital city, and experience the unique geography that Norway has to offer.
