PRELUDE/ “Our dreams take us to places we’ll never reach and open doors into other worlds and windows into ourselves.” “Closer to the Dream” tries to be another one of those doors towards the universe that Sarah undoubtedly tried to connect us to a few years ago , we would define every aspect of it as a portion of that light-filled vision and futuristic vibe that we were able to enjoy and admire throughout the year. During this time we were able to feel her passion for that of what we don’t know, for what we question ourselves “why” and “how”. Her passion to discover and experiment every step of the way, for those internal feelings mutating into songs that play in every corner of the world, that project and converge in the biggest challenge of her life. It is another way to thank that unique conection that we felt the first time we heard Dreamchaser, we knew that something had tied, from Argentina to Japan, from Sweden to Canada, from China to Brasil and everyone, Dreamchaser possibly being the most intimate and complex projection of herself that we could ever imagine. Without doubt this vision of the universe has turned into an inspiration that invites us as fans to chase our own dreams. With it we are witnesses once more and with more of 30 years experience of the continuous evolution and reinvention that Sarah gives in every jobtask. Today we are at a key point of this journey, at the end of the year in which a cycle is finished to write another stage, the true beginning of a marvelous cycle: that chased dreams come true. With this idea comes the intention to become the first professional musician to be on board of the ISS, we decide to take on this project with the purpose of all of us being able to understand the real dimension of the magical and importance that was this year for us and for her, the enormous and gratifying steps in which we will acompany her with, all united by one commonfeeling: We’re not dreamers, we are dreamchasers.

LABEL Simha LLC RELEASED 16/01/13 (Japan) 08/04/13 (UK) LENGTH 60:42

On April, 2013 we got to know Sarah’s long-awaited 11th studio-album, Dreamchaser. This work was the first that counts with the cooperation of the well-known producer Mike Hedges (Dido, The Cure, U2) and it was co-producted by Sally Herbert. It was recorded in 2012 in Abbey Road Studios (London) and Westlake Recording Studios (Los Angeles). Mastered by Mazen Munrad in Metropolis. As fans, honestly, our lifetime wouldn´t be enough to describe with precision what this album has done and generated in the subconscious mind of each of us, because if Sarah with this album has tried to print a specific message, she has absolutely achieved her goal, she has given us a surreal disk, connected with the spiritual, at the same time that she has made us realize of the wonders around us. Re reading her words, we can understand why not only her fans but also the specialized critics have acclaimed this work as one of the most complex and important of her whole career, and we understand even more this general vision through her own words: “The first human landing in the moon was like a revelation. It has changed stuff. It has helped me understand what I want to do with my life, it pushed me to deal with things…and from that moment on, I started working very hard These new songs are subtly connected with my feelings…they are intimate, and open at the same time, they look out –we look up the sky and we dream,

“I’VE ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN SPACE AND THE IDEA OF IT’S EXPLORATION“ we let our imagination fly and explore. The words, Dreamchaser, include absolutely everything for me”.

Sarah’s love for all things extraordinary is vividly present in her 2013 album, Dreamchaser, where she delves into her own relationship with the universe and thoughts of space travel in a very cinematic way.

/SONGS AND COMPOSITION The album’s first single, “Angel” was written by Sally Herbert and Jerry Burns specifically for Sarah. It features strings, electronic percussion, bassline, backing voices, guitars and harp. “Well, I wanted a producer that could really take on the idea that I wanted to do. I wanted something that was out for world peace. Something that was spiritual, but had a huge amount of energy running through it, was ballistic at times. So I needed a producer that could deal on one hand with The Cure and U2, and yet be producing singing monks and that whole area. Mike is actually a pretty spiritual kind of guy. He’s very rock and roll and gothic. “ The second single, a cover Elbow’s “One Day Like This.” is an indie-pop song com-

posed by sequenced synths, strings, and ambient textures. “Well, apart from it being a great piece of music, it’s an unusual choice for somebody like me to take on a piece like this. But I really listened to the song, and I saw the original video of it. It seems the song is about experience - one small experience can last you a lifetime. You don’t need much of it, and nowadays we’re very greedy for experience. I just thought about the deeper meaning of the song, what it was trying to say. “ Following is Sarah’s rendition of Sigur Rós’ “Glosoli,” with English lyrics by Squeeze’s Chris Difford. The melody features ambient sounds, layers of cellos and violincellos, a backing chorus, and drums. “Glósóli” was an interesting piece to do. I asked about commissioning the original Sigur Rós song, and I didn’t want to do it in Icelandic - it’s not my mother language. And they said, “Well, why do you want to do this song? We don’t want this song orientated.” And I said, “No, that’s not the point. The reason I want to do this piece is because you really can feel the land that you’ve created, being Iceland.” And when I think of the countries of the world, one that’s very connected to space is Iceland. The way that it looks and feels. It feels like space because the skies are clearer. I wanted to just really vocally give the feeling that something striking is out there “ “Lento e Largo” is extracted from Henryk Górecki’s Symphony No. 3 and “A Song of India” is a cover of Rimsky-Korsakov’s song. Brightman also covers Sia’s “Breathe Me”, Cocteau Twins’ “Eperdu” and Paul McCartney’s “Venus and Mars”. “Eperdu” was a challenge. I’ve always been a bit of a fan of the Cocteau Twins. Elizabeth Fraser, I love her voice, what she does. But, of course, throughout the Cocteau Twins’ career they seem to have developed their own language, so it was a

challenge to actually emulate it and also bring something new to it vocally. About “Venus and Mars”: I mean, you’re either a Beatles fan or a Stones fan, and I was definitely a Beatles fan. When you think about the space area, there is a very playful romantic area within it, when we think about it. I wanted a piece that took up this area, and I thought that “Venus and Mars” very much did. There’s something fun about it, something a bit tonguein-cheek about it, and it just felt right.

/KEEPING IT SIMPLE: THE TOUR Sarah went out on tour for six months in June 2013 to support her new album Dreamchaser. The tour continues into 2014 with a two-month stint covering China, UAE, Ukraine, Europe and Scandinavia. This is the first time Sarah has performed in the some territories and she wasn’t entirely sure what to expect The chosen location to kick off the Dreamchaser World Tour was the Guangzhou International Sports Arena in Guangzhou, China. The concert was highly anticipated, not only by her Chinese fans but for everyone. This would be the first of more than a hundred concerts marathon that would take Sarah to every corner of the world. Sarah performed her greatest hits along with songs from her brand new record Dreamchaser. “I´ve always been interested in space and the idea of it´s exploration (…) The moon landing we all saw on television really framed me for the rest of my life” And that is what inspired her to do the record. According to her own words the eleven tracks are “very expansive songs” and they are related to the idea we all have about the

A FORCED ENDING Due to a hairline fracture, American dates scheduled for August had to be cancelled. Doctors adviced Sarah to rest until September. She said :“ I have suffered a hairline fracture to my ankle and have been advised by my doctors to rest it until September by which time it will have fully recovered. I have, regrettably, taken the decision to cancel my forthcoming US dates in August”.-

universe. The record has eleven very different songs, but they all present deep thoughts and reflections. From the medieval composition Ave Maria to a rendition of Glosoli, by Icelandic band Sigur Ros. Dreamchaser was critically acclaimed, not only for it´s originality but for Sarah´s daring to do something most artist fear: innovation. Talent, a brilliant mind and an amazing sense of sensitivity are the best way to describe Sarah and her new work. Dominating the stage is a huge LED video screen that, rather than the usual approach of displaying larger-than-life images of the performer, offers a dazzling array of outer space and cosmic images worthy of any big-budget Sci-Fi epic. The staging is bare, with soprano Sarah and two dancers accompanied by four musicians. Sarah has previously toured with a symphony section, but this time, the live band is augmented on some songs with orchestral tracks. “In the past we’ve brought in orchestral players on stage, but the Dreamchaser tour has a lot of video synched to a large video screen, and was no place to put them onstage without obstructing the visuals,”. She performed five times in Tokio, followed by a performance in Hiroshima and Osaka, for the last time in that country Then it would be America´s turn, starting in North America. Sarah once said she felt “at home” while performing in America, both the critics and the people adore her. The tour visited Canada with four shows and then it returned to the States where Sarah played nineteen stunning shows. She obtained standing ovations a critical acclaim in every venue. Her voice was qualified as brilliant and the whole show as a visual paradise. Sarah arrived in South America , starting in Santiago, Chile. This provoked a huge expectation among her Argentine fans, which finally had two sold out Dreamchaser shows at the Luna

Park Stadium. Finally, she ended this part of the tour in Brasil, closing a 2013 full of success. Sarah returned to China in January 2014, performing five sold out shows there. She also visited the United Arab Emirates and Qatar for the first time in February. The tour ended in Stockholm , Sweden, on February 26th. Dreamchaser Tour showed us, once again, that Sarah doesn´t fear risks when she has to create art. Her shows blow everyone in the audience away, making them fall in love with every moment of it. All we can say is that we are eager to see the curtains rise again. How is Sarah going to surprise us the next time?

Sarah appeals to a wide range of ages. Some older people don’t quite under tand the volume, but that’s the way it is. This Year a percentage of the money donated by Sarah Brightman, from her concert in Mexico city on the 13th of November of 2013 as a part of her Dreamchaser World Tour, was used for the purchase of galvanized sheets for houses that were razed when the La Venta dam overflow occurred. This is just a small portion of everything Sarah has done over the years: maintain a concordance between her musical thoughts and her deep commitment with her personal thoughts.

to the dialogue and culture exchange promotion. We all remember the single called Deliver Me of1999 to benefit Taiwan, her commitment to the most vulnerable children and the defense of their rights. She participated in 2006 “Children ´s peace prize”, where she sang Hijo de La Luna. In 2007 she took part of the Teletlon and in 2009 she donated toys to the poor chil-

“There´s an enormous opportunity for the world to take advantage of the intellectual capital from a part of the society that needs to be encouraged. The younger people like you are that part of the society. While I prepare myself for the space trip on the next two years I want to make sure of doing everything I can to encourage all the people of your age to chase any ambition they have, weather if it is in

the science and technology field or in art”. To show the world the work UNESCO does, in 2015, she plans a series of events from space that include music and multimedia from the ISS. /SYMFUNNY Parkinson’s UK presents: Symfunny is organised by conductor, composer and producer James Morgan and his partner, Juliette Pochin, and is the result of James’ shock young onset Parkinson’s diagnosis at the beginning of last year. Turning bad news into a positive, James, along with his partner, fellow composer, producer and soprano Juliette Pochin, wanted to use their musical connections to help raise money for and awareness of this progressive condition and joined forces with Parkinson’s UK. For one night only, international soprano, Sarah Brightman will be returning to the stage, not to sing, but to pick up the baton once again, following her conducting debut in the film ‘First Night’. The operatic romantic comedy, released in 2010, starred Sarah alongside Richard E Grant. James, who mentored Sarah to conduct for the film, also created the music, and Sarah jumped at the chance to refresh her conducting skills for Symfunny, she said: “I’m thrilled to be involved in Symfunny. We had so much fun training for this and making the film, this will bring back some great memories -James gave me the gift of being able to conduct and it’s an honour to be able to give something back to both him and Juliette for such a worthy cause”

/03. A TIMELESS ALBUM 17TH ALBUM RELEASE ANNIVERSARY Its main single, “Time To Say Goodbye” has now sold more than 12 million copies worldwide, making it one of best selling singles of all time. The song’s original single release by Polydor Records was not commercially successful in Italy, and received little radio airplay there. Elsewhere, however, it was a massive hit. In France and Switzerland, the single topped the charts for 6 weeks, earning a triple Gold sales award. In Belgium, it became the biggest hit of all time, spending 12 weeks at No. 1 A second version of the song, sung partly in English, released in 1996 as “Time to Say Goodbye”, paired Bocelli with English soprano Sarah Brightman, and achieved even greater success, topping charts all across Europe, including Germany, where it became the biggest-selling single in history. That version alone has now sold more than 12 million copies worldwide,

making it one of best-selling singles of all time. It was used as the theme song for the final match of boxer Henry Maske (then the light-heavyweight champion of the International Boxing Federation), having seen previous success when Vangelis’s “Conquest of Paradise” was also promoted via Maske’s fights. “Time to Say Goodbye” was also turned into a duet with Sarah Brightman, who had performed “A Question of Honour” for one of Maske’s previous fights. German producer Frank Peterson, who has worked with Brightman since 1991, opted to give the song an English title rather than the German title “Mit Dir Werde Ich Fortgehen”. Recording of the song took place at Peterson’s Nemo Studio, in Hamburg.

“With the London Symphony Orchestra, Sarah Brightman provides yet another successful album that showcases her exquisite talent so beautifully.” -ABC Shop

The match took place on November 23, 1996, pitting Maske against American Virgil Hill, and drew a television broadcast audience of over 21 million. Bocelli and Brightman performed the song to open the match, and it was used again during Maske’s exit.

img copyright: Peter Bischoff By December, the “Time to Say Goodbye” single, released on East West, had reached number one on the German singles chart, with sales estimated at 40,000– 60,000 per day and projected for at least one million by the end of the year. Both singers’ albums also received a boost in sales. Airplay on German radio stations such as Norddeutscher Rundfunk was well received by listeners. By February of the following year, the single had broken the all-time sales record in Germany with 1.65 million sales, and would eventually get certified 11x Gold for selling over 2,750,000 copies. It is also the best-selling single in Belgium. “Time to Say Goodbye” reached number two on the UK Singles Chart upon its release there in May 1997, and was certified gold. It remained in the top 30 for another two months, helped by steady radio airplay on BBC Radio 2, which was

overtaking Radio 1 in popularity with an MOR-orientated playlist. The duet was included on Brightman’s 1997 album Timeless, re-titled as Time to Say Goodbye in the U.S. with the song itself moved to the start of the album. Sarah has also recorded a solo version, which was released on the duet single as well as later albums including “Classics” and “Diva the singles collection”. A live version was released on “Harem world tour, live from Las Vegas” cd as well as her various tour DVDs. Bocelli and Brightman have performed the duet together publicly several times including Andrea’s “Statue of Liberty concert” held in New York City, and “Live in Tuscany” concerts

/IN CONCERT WITH ORCHESTRA Following the two performances in September (Beijing-Miaoli), Sarah kicked off her “In Concert With Orchestra” Tour at the Ulker Sports Arena in Turkey as a part of the “Good Music In Town” festival in Istanbul. The tour visited Turkey, Bulgaria (for the first time in her career), Rumania, Russia (for the third time in less than a year), Estonia and Latvia. The Asian leg of the tour consisted in 10 shows in Japan and then back to Taiwan, shortly after her last visit to that country. During the tour Sarah performed every show with the tenor Erkan Aki as a guest vocalist and a live local orchestra, conducted by the legendary Paul Bateman. Sarah used a LED screen for the tour, smaller than the one she used for her Dreamchaser World Tour. The setlist was completely modified, turning the whole thing into a “Greatest Hits” tour, with songs from all of her various albums. On November 11th Sarah arrived to Bulgaria, with a huge repercussion of the local networks. Together with the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra she played at the Arena Armeec. Days before the show

it was announced that Sarah was very happy to meet her fans from Sofia. “This is my first time performing in Bulgaria, so I wanted to include all of my greatest and popular songs. The audience will hear songs from all the areas I have sang during my career. Everything you want to hear will be there” The shows had a length of 2 hours, enough time for Sarah to deliver her charisma, her talent and to make a unique connection with thousands of people in every venue. We got to hear after a long time, iconic songs such as Fleurs du mal, Symphony, Who wants to live forever, Anytime, anywhere, Harem and Dust in the wind. Despite having big fan favorites, such as” Angel” and “Glosoli”, left out of the setlist, we got to hear songs from Dreamchaser such as A song of India, Eperdu and Breath Me.

“TAIWAN IS VERY CLOSE TO MY HEART” img copyright: ChinaFotoPress -So is this your first time in Taiwan? -No, I’ve been here many many times, actually it’s been really interesting because when my solo recording career got going after I’ve been in theatre and phantom and all that stuff, it was actually Montreal (Canada) and Taipei that picked up on me first of all, and these were the countries I started to sell all the albums that I’m well known for doing, so Taiwan is sort of very close to my heart because of this. -So Sarah, what you do like the most about Taiwan? -Well I’ve always, whenever I come here I find the people incredibly friendly and of course when I’m here I’m normally doing a concert or doing promotion, so I never really get the chance to go around the city but it’s the feel of the city that I find is incredibly vibrant and I know everyone works very hard here but I get a sort of holiday feeling when I’m here, and I love the food, and actually when I was a little girl, the lady that sometimes baby sat for me, she was going out with this beautiful man from here and he would cook all the food from here, and I mean we’re talking about going back to the late 60’s, so as a child I had the food from here, he was cooking it for us in our kitchen in England! -So you were here back in September, in Miaoli -Oh I had a wonderful time, it was amazing -Was it? I was actually there, I brought my whole family there to see you -Did you? That is great! The people as far as I could see, there were people watching and it was outside, it was a beautiful warm evening.

-You know how many people came? -No I don’t (smiling) -60 thousand people! -No way! That’s amazing! It’s a lovely thing to do and I think the people really really enjoy coming to this concert because they have it every year don’t they? -Is there gonna be any difference between this time and the Miaoli concert? -Yes because, what I was doing the last time, that was what was called the Dreamchaser Tour, this concert is some sort of retrospective of all the work that I’ve done, of course there will be some of the songs in there because I was singing the classics, but it’s a different thing really. It’s very specific, it is my signure. -Ok so, could you tell us about concert? Are you excited? -Well this tour is really a sort of restrospec-

tive of all the albums that I’ve done, and we got some beautiful visual content on the backscreen, and of course we’re gonna be using one of your wonderful orchestras, so it’s actually people saying just the way this concert is actually one of their favorites, it’s quite intimate but yet you get a bigger picture as well so people are very happy with it. -Could you talk about the songs selection?

-Do you have any tip that you wanna share with us? -It’s all about passion, if you have a passion for what you do, you find a way of doing it and then being very wonderful at it and I think this is very important for everybody who wants to do wonderful things in life.

-Well I chose pieces like, from my symphony album, and from La Luna, and the Time To Say Goodbye album, Eden, and actually the most classic songs from my albums and it was great fun putting them all together, and

“IF YOU HAVE A PASSION FOR WHAT YOU DO, YOU FIND A WAY OF DOING IT AND THEN BEING VERY WONDERFUL AT IT ” working with the songs, some have slightly some modern arrangements in them for the orchestra and for the band, so they all blend together very beautifully, and each section tells a story, and of course the costumes that I have for the costumes are very beautiful, they are very kind of godess looking and statuesque, it kind of seems to have all the ingredients that people enjoy! - How do you mantain your angelic voice? -I think there is a very practical side to the voice, as well as the methaphycical, it’s about training all the time, I work with my voice and different voice coiches around the world, and it’s really in between, when I often find myself in a concert tour for 6 weeks or whatever, I then go to my coach and work to sort of realign my voice and see if I’ve been making any mistake, so it’s continuously about being in touch with the muscles and all these things that you need to understand to keep your voice going on in term.

/THE RED QUEEN. I was contacted through a styling agency, Victoria Adcock based in London - who found my work through Etsy. They told me about a fitting they were having with Sarah Brightman for her next world tour. I sent through a variety of different headpieces and she chose her favourite. It was incredibly exciting to be approached to create a piece for such a renowned singer and performer. Andew Lloyd Webber’s original Phantom of the Opera has captured my imagination since I was a child. Her theatrical stage presence is incredible and I am really happy she chose my Red Queen Headpiece designs to wear on tour.
