EDUCATION.

1993 - Born

Me. Graduate from Edinburgh College of Art studying product design. I am a passionate and enthusiastic designer. I love to work on my own projects, as well as collaborating with other designers to pick up new skills and pass on whatever knowledge I have. My passion is to create to create piece which challenge today’s society, in terms of the way in which we live and would ultimately like to make our lives simpler through my creations. Current. My final degree pieces, have involved working on two projects. My client based project examines ways in which the living standards and the quality of social interaction for children with cerebral palsy can be improved. My main focus is the emotional impact of design. My other project is centered on design for necessity and throwaway culture. My focus for this is to create alternative manufacturing methods for the production of footwear. To see any of the development work for either of these projects please refer to my blog; http://thebushell.tumblr.com/

LAZERIAN June 2013 – August 2013 (3 months) During the summer of my second year at University, I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to work with a contemporary furniture and design studio. Whilst with Lazerian, I was encouraged to work on concepts outside my usual remit, and I developed a number new skills and technique through this opportunity. I worked at the Bench Self Made Gallery, composing ‘live’ work and talking to viewers; and I learnt about the presentation of work and interaction with potential clients and viewers. As well as gallery based work, I worked on CAD projects and composed other pieces for Lost Heritage. CRAMASIE June 2014 – July 2014 (4 weeks) Cramasie is a company with a talented design and engineering team who have a wealth of knowledge, skills, experience, and a proven track-record of creating successful and award-winning products. During my placement I worked on various projects but my main role was to compose sketches and photoshop renders, for client presentations. NOOD Design for necessity and prevention of throw away culture.

PLATE

Exhibited at the Plate (Product Lifetimes and the Environment). First International conference to address the product lifetimes in the context of sustainability. Nottingham 17-19 June 2015.

NEW DESIGNERS Exhibited at New designers London July 2015.

This project began as a critical design piece to highlight and raise awareness to a consumerist habit, of ‘throw away culture.’ Todays manufacturing has vastly changed over the past 100 years. The shift of hand to machine, has allowed for the creating of cheap mass manufactured goods. That are easy to access as well as being easy to dispose. Yet handmade goods, as seen as luxury items based on there cost. High costings eliminate the larger demographic and persuade people to go for the cheap option. If the consquences of ‘throw away culture’ where highlighted to the consumer, it could potentially alter the way in which products are purchased. In essence the disposal of products that are still usable could be translated into loss of income, which would be a more personal take, as it considers ‘throw away culture’ in terms of hard eanred wages rather than items. If handmade objects where manufactured in an alternate way that allowed them to be retailed at a much smaller cost, then the concept of throw way culture would diminsh. As based on the idea of handmade good being more personal, a connection between consumer and product would be generated therefore prevent these ease of disposability.

NOOD

Manifesto 01. High quality and hand made articles 02. Affordable and accessible

About NOOD, is studio that has been composed based on the concept of analysing throw away culture and looking into how designs can be altered to change society perception of accessible and throw away goods. By reverting back to traditional processes, NOOD’S philosophy is to compose articles that are only deemed necessary. Through sustainable manufacture and making everything by hand. The products on show will be a range of different article of uni sex footwear, as well as kit shoe for kids, so that they can developed a better understand of manufacture. The project aims to develop a greater relationship with purchaser and product.

03. Repair over throw 04. Low cost but high quality 05. Necessary 06. Prevention of throw away 07. Commitment through making 08 Re-use scrap

The manifesto was created as piece that could be refferred to develop other products. The points that are presented have been schosne to make the designer/developed consider that way in which they decided to design ‘new’ products.

One of the intial products that i began developing with the NOOD philiosphy, was glasses. A necessity for seeing. The main concept of the glasses was to make a system to allow for the correct frames to be worn by the individual as well as reducing the number of compoents. Therefore for this i looked into using living hinges. The glasses weren’t developed furthr due to how I felt that they were failry limiting in terms of potential.

Project brief

10.

FINAL BRIEF: Compose 4 individual pieces of footwear, that are developed through simplification of the shoe making process. The processes used to make the shoes, should utilize hand made process. The processes that are used to compose the articles, should reduce the time in which it takes to make each individual pair. As well as giving the option for the individual to buy the shoes in kit format and make them themselves, for a reduced fee.

Footwear. Footwear was choosen as the necessity to be developed due to how it is viewed as a necessity in a variety of different countries including 3rd world. After looking atfootwear in more detial i felt that there were greater challenges to tackle and develop from, somehing whihc eye wear didn’t present.

Use sustainable materials in the construction. Including leather that has been damaged therefore can't be used by high end shoe companies. The 4 individual pieces of footwear need to accommodate both men and women. Either as unisex piece or individual articles. Retail at a price of under ÂŁ50.00 Develop a kit shoe for kids, that allow themselves or a parent to put the shoe together them selves so that the develop a better understanding of the hand made process. Individually number each article - so that it has an essence of personalisation and care attached.

John Lobb, are one of the leading Northmapton based cobblers in the world. After conntacting them, i was able to visit there factory and get a more indepth understanding of how all the shoes were made. There were able to give me access to all of the waste leather that they had on site as well as allowing me to use it for the final pieces. As well as visiting John Lobb, I also went to a Dr Martens, talk on there handmade range of shoes. The majority of Dr Martens are manufactured in China, yet there handmade range in Manfactured in the Uk. The main reason for the ressurgance in UK manufacture is based on the public, and how they want/feel the product will be of a higher quality

50% of the leather bought is waste. 196 processes in one shoes. £800 retail price.

Shoes, are a readily avalable and cheap commodity depending on where your purchase them from. With shops like Primark selling them for under £10, we have developed a social ethos of being able to buy something wear it once/a few times and then dispose of it and by another with little consideration to the environment repurcussions.

The concept of manufacture for the is in 3 different variatants. All allowing for choice of material and style of shoe. 1. Premade; Buy online or instore. 2. Buy instore and make with the guidance of one of the team. 3. Buy instore or online and make at home. The main focus of the manufacturing styles, is to allow for a switch of manufacture back the UK and utlising the hand as the main making tool. Through making ‘things’ by hand the purchaser will develop a greater connection and ownership with the product.

Kids Kit shoe. The kit shoe was developed to allow for the brand to incorperate a large demographic of users. The concept of the kits shoe intially was to allow for children to compose there own footwear. Thorugh this then developing a greater connection to the piece and also making them consider what goes into maufacturing other shoe, so that they arn’t as keen to throw away shoes and other items. The shoe comes packaged in an apron which the child can then wear and make the shoes along with a simplistic instruction manual.

MATU Design for play and empowerment.

This was a client based project workimg with an 8 year old boy with a server for of Athetoid Cerebral Palsy. Cerebal Palsy is a impairment that has little done to aid it in a design sense mainly due to the way in which the condition varies between individual. This is one of the main reasons that i choose to do the project as a client driven piece, as it allowd for me to work closely with the clients and supply him with a product outcome that would suffice his everyday needs. He had limited control and co-ordintaion over his movement therefore, found it incredibly difficult to be able to interact and play with other Children. MATU looks at providing him with an alternate play device, that will allow hi to be able to control a toy based on his own specific movements and gestures.

Brief Compose a gesture based interactive remote controller that can be used by children with disabilities and both able bodied children. The gestures used to control the piece will be based on close observational research of Matthew. Each movement specified as a control input should be simplistic and easy for Matthew to do as the toys should not be a frustration.

GESTURES

EMPOWERMENT

There needs to be a preventive feature to stop the object from falling of the table as then create an issue for Matthew as he will then be dependent on getting someone else to pick the object up and putting it on the table. This is some thing that may become repetitive and annoying for Matthew and the person collecting the object for him.

Through the specified gesture that Matthew can do, this then creates a toy that he will be able to simplistically control and give him a sense of empowerment as he is no longer reliant on others.

The concept of the project was to develop Matthew a remote control device that would allow him to input failry simplistic gestures that he is able to do and then this is turn will create movement in what ever object he chooses.

To look at whether or not Matthew was able to control and object and produce an output, I built this prototype that used a simple foam ball and a tinkerkit and tilt switches. Depending on the movement of the ball, different LED coloured lights will turn on.

Shortlisted for you Scottish Innovators. The consultancy was chosen as the winner, due to having the best business plan & profit.

Riccio is a customisable 3D printed solar light that explores and gives function to new and emerging printing technologies. Riccio (Italian for hedgehog if your wondering), is a speculative concept for solar lighting. The concept was a response to a brief set by the German company Purmundus. Solar lights, as they are today are fairly boring and undesigned, some may say tacky. With Riccio I wanted to compose something new that would make people want to own a solar light whilst at the same time taking a greener route. The piece is designed to maximise the surface area that can be hit by the sun. Based on research I propose that the piece would be printed as one including electronics.

BLANK Flat pack chair for children

The concept i created is BLANK. A DIY piece of furniture that allows children to create there own piece as well as being as creative as they wish. The project is centered around the interpretation of childrens furniture. When we considered furnitre that is designed for children it is normally birght with colour, animal themed or a minuture version of adult furniture. Blank challenges this. By looking into the way in which, children interacte with furniture and activities they do. It takes apsect of drawings and the satification of being able to make something yourself and combines this into the final concept. Through talking to children, and understanding what they personal wanted rather than what the parents wanted: BLANK creates a product inspired by kids for kids. So, why blank? The surface of the piece is created to be interchangable thorugh the childs art work. Children should be allowed to be as creative as they want, something which this piece allows for.

"Your going to have do this one, 'cause i'm not strong enough."

The fixitives used in convential childresn furniture don’t consider the possibility of children putting furnture together them selves. Allen keys are too difficult for children to grip onto and use to tighten screws. Emotionally, it’s quite a flustrat ing task, to not be able to put something together thats been designed for you.

B WEL

Bee hive rebranded for Marks & Spensers

Bwel is a some what speculative approach to composing a bee hive in accordance with the Marks and Spencer brand. The concept of the brief was to use the Marks and Spencer brand image and apply it to a product that they don’t curren ly sell but could if it was marketed under their brand. I had become increasingly aware of the decline of the bee population as a result of environmental aspects and after enrolling on a bee keeping course, I developed a real desire to compose my own hive design. I believed that through design- ing the hive in accordance with the brand image of M&S, I could raise awareness of the issues around bee populations. My aim was to encourage potential buyers to feel as pas- sionate as I am about helping bees, and ultimately that there would be an increase not only in bee hives but in the num- bers of bees we have.

Make up for dexterity

A range of make up products which are designed with the idea of tactility and ease of use. The main concept behind the project comes through user observation of how people with arthritis and othe dexterity issues, struggle to interact with certain products. The main, problematic product that I found was make up bottles and other cosmetics. The main aim of the project was to compose a product that was new and hadn’t been previously explored. I felt that make up was a perfect range as there is nothing new or different on the market which considers those who may not be able to use the pieces as easily as others. Although it isn’t widley considered as being a problemtaic product, I found that through talkig to people with various dexterity issues that the main reason it wasn’t disclosed was due to how people stopped wearing it, to prevent the complexity of use.
